Muscat Daily27-01-2025
Muscat – Muscat Global Knowledge Dialogue, a major international event focused on science and innovation, opened on Monday under the patronage of H H Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan.
Organised by Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in collaboration with International Science Council (ISC), the two-day forum will be followed by the ISC General Assembly on January 29 and 30.
In her opening address, H E Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, underscored the forum's aim to foster knowledge exchange and collaboration among nations. She emphasised the need to transform innovative ideas into tangible economic and social benefits, aligning with Oman Vision 2040's goal of advancing a knowledge-based economy.
'This global event provides an exceptional opportunity to bring together over 500 participants, including scientists, researchers, policymakers and experts from across the globe,' said H E Rahma. 'The discussions will address global challenges, set priorities for international scientific cooperation, and build partnerships in research and innovation.'
The forum's dialogue sessions will focus on three key themes – future of science, science diplomacy and the role of science in society. Topics include emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, trust in science, sustainable development, and the need for greater equality and social cohesion.
Highlighting her ministry's ongoing commitment to scientific research and innovation, H E Rahma said, 'We fund numerous research projects annually and support infrastructure, skills development, and partnerships among government, private sector and academic institutions.'
On the significance of such global discussions, Sir Peter Gluckman, President of ISC, said, 'These dialogues bridge the gap between science and politics, addressing regional and global contexts.' He described ISC as a central organisation advocating the use of scientific evidence in policymaking and promoting multidisciplinary cooperation to tackle complex challenges. Sir Peter Gluckman
Sir Peter emphasised the role of science in societal development, especially in emerging economies and least-developed nations. 'Science must be at the core of solutions for the environmental, social and economic issues faced by governments at all levels.'
Speaking on the importance of building trust in science, Ruth Morgan, Director of Centre for Forensic Sciences at University College London, said, 'The question of who shapes the social contract for science and what it looks like today is critical.'
The dialogue highlights the crucial role of science in addressing global challenges, fostering international collaboration and ensuring sustainable progress for all nations.

Oman's delegation will share the country's experiences in water resource management, fisheries sustainability and agricultural development during working sessions. Oman backs global push for Palestine

The Sultanate of Oman has renewed its call for all nations to recognise the State of Palestine, following the announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron that France will officially extend recognition during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry on Friday, Oman welcomed France's position and urged countries that have not yet recognised the Palestinian state to take this step as a moral and political imperative. 'The Sultanate of Oman calls on all countries that have not yet recognised the State of Palestine to do so — embodying the two-state solution and consolidating the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital', the statement said. Oman added that such recognition would enhance the chances of achieving peace and justice in the Middle East. Meanwhile in Riyadh, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jassim bin Mohammed al Budaiwi, also praised the French announcement, calling it 'an important step that reflects the French Republic's firm commitment to justice, international legitimacy and global stability'. He called on all countries that have not recognised Palestine to 'take this historic and responsible step, which will contribute to alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people and support the path towards a just and lasting peace'. Al Budaiwi reaffirmed the GCC's unwavering position in support of the Palestinian cause and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump accused Hamas on Friday of not wanting to reach a ceasefire deal in Gaza as Israel said it would explore 'alternative options' to rescue hostages after negotiations collapsed. An Israeli official meanwhile said air drops of aid would resume soon over the Gaza Strip, where aid groups warned of surging numbers of malnourished children as international concern mounted over the deepening humanitarian crisis after more than 21 months of war. After US and Israeli negotiators quit indirect talks with Hamas in Qatar, Trump said that 'it was was too bad. Hamas didn't really want to make a deal. I think they want to die.' His special envoy Steve Witkoff accused Hamas of not 'acting in good faith' in the negotiations that ended on Thursday. Meanwhile, aid groups warned of surging numbers of malnourished children in war-ravaged Gaza as a trio of European powers held an 'emergency call' on Friday on the deepening humanitarian crisis. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said that a quarter of the young children and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers it had screened at its clinics last week were malnourished, a day after the United Nations said one in five children in Gaza City were suffering from malnutrition. — ONA, Agencies

"France will recognise the state of Palestine": Macron ahead of UNGA

Paris [France], July 25 (ANI): French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday announced that France will formally recognize the State of Palestine, a move he said will be finalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September, amid growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, France 24 reported. In a post on social media, Macron said, "The urgent thing today is that the war in Gaza stops and the civilian population is saved." He added, "Given its historic commitment to a just and sustainable peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine. Peace is possible." France 24 reported that the announcement follows Macron's growing frustration with Israel's conduct in Gaza, especially in recent months. While Macron initially expressed strong support for Israel after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, he has since advocated for an end to the conflict and increased humanitarian aid. The French president also shared a letter addressed to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas regarding the decision. In response, Abbas's deputy, Hussein al-Sheikh, welcomed France's intent to recognize a Palestinian state. "This position reflects France's commitment to international law and its support for the Palestinian people's rights to self-determination and the establishment of our independent state," Sheikh said, as cited by France 24. France becomes the largest and most influential European nation to take this step. Although more than 130 countries have recognized Palestine--including most Middle Eastern, African, Latin American, and Asian nations--countries such as the United States, Canada, most of Western Europe, Australia, Japan, and South Korea have not. According to France 24, Macron's decision comes shortly after the United States halted Gaza ceasefire talks in Qatar, citing Hamas's lack of good faith. The announcement also follows mounting international criticism of Israel over its restrictions on aid to Gaza and the deaths of Palestinians attempting to access food supplies. France, which hosts both the largest Jewish population and the largest Muslim population in Western Europe, has often seen domestic tensions rise during Middle East conflicts. Israel's Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Yariv Levin strongly condemned France's recognition of Palestine, calling it "a black mark on French history and a direct aid to terrorism." He added, "France's shameful decision" signaled that it was "time to apply Israeli sovereignty" to the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967. France 24 reported that Macron's government has been pushing for a broader movement towards a two-state solution. The French foreign minister is co-hosting a UN conference next week aimed at reviving this vision, with Macron reaffirming his "determination to recognize the state of Palestine" while upholding Israel's right to self-defense. The Palestinians seek an independent state in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem--territories Israel occupied following the 1967 Mideast war. Israel annexed East Jerusalem shortly afterward and has since built extensive settlements in the West Bank, home to more than 500,000 Israeli settlers. About 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank live under Israeli military rule, with limited autonomy under the Palestinian Authority. France 24 highlighted that Macron's announcement adds significant momentum to global calls for a resolution to the long-standing conflict through a two-state framework.
