Saturn's rings to ‘vanish' this weekend: What to know
The rings, believed to be made up of rocky and icy chunks that could be as large as a house, help separate Saturn from other planets in our solar system. They're also about to perform a vanishing trick — sort of.
Like Earth, Saturn's axis is tilted, NASA explains. Saturn is transitioning, causing its tilt to shift. This will alter our view of the planet as Earth crosses its ring plane. This is where the disappearance comes in.
'The rings engage in sort of a planetary 'sleight of hand,' where, when viewed from the edge, the rings seem to disappear (think of a sheet of paper – it looks large when viewed from above, but as you tilt it, it gets thinner and thinner),' explained Dr. Amy Simon, Senior Scientist for Planetary Atmospheres Research in the Solar System Exploration Division at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
Because we're so far from Saturn, and its rings are relatively thin, we can lose sight of them by shifting just a few degrees above or below them, Simon previously told Nexstar. The size and quality of the telescope you use and 'the calmness of Earth's atmosphere,' can also impact our ability to see Saturn's rings.
Starting on Sunday, Saturn's rings will seem to disappear for a few days. For the next several months, Simon said the rings will 'remain very thin' to our eyes.

'Unfortunately, Saturn will be very close to the Sun in the sky in March, so it will be difficult to catch this from small telescopes,' she said. 'However, because the Earth's orbit is short, a similar geometry will occur in November, when Saturn is easier to view, but it won't be quite as edge-on as in March, so the rings may be barely visible.'
It will be about 13 to 15 years before we will get to see a ringless Saturn, according to Simon. NASA previously predicted that our crossing of Saturn's ring-plane will be even better in 2038-39 when Earth undergoes a triple passage and gives us three chances to see a seemingly ringless Saturn: October 15, 2038; April 1, 2039; and July 9, 2039.

For all of the eons that animal life has existed on Earth, the sun has been there too. And for all of those eons, animal life has had only one solution for intense exposure to the sun: evolution. Some creatures have thick, dark skin that's resistant to UV harm; others sprout fur, scales, or feathers that block the sun's rays. Many fish, reptiles, amphibians, and birds may produce a compound that protects their cells against the sun's damaging effects. Hippos, weirdly, ooze a reddish, mucus-y liquid from their pores that absorbs light before it can destroy their skin. And plenty of creatures have evolved behaviors that take advantage of their environment—rolling around in dirt or mud, simply retreating into the shade. But certain modern animals have sun problems that natural selection can't easily solve. Some reside at zoos that can't perfectly replicate their habitat; others live at latitudes that their ancestors didn't experience. Others spend too much time sunbathing in a living-room window, or sport sparse or light-colored fur or hair because their domesticators liked the way it looked. For these animals, people have come up with a shorter-term solution: sunscreen. If, that is, a creature is willing to accept the treatment. Indu, an Asian elephant who lived at the Phoenix Zoo, was game. A few years ago, Heather Wright, one of the zookeepers, noticed the tops of Indu's ears pinking, peeling, and flaking in the summer heat, much like her human keepers' did. So her caretakers picked up some zinc-oxide-based sunblock—specially formulated for sensitive (human) skin—and dabbed it on the elephant. Indu, to be fair, was used to a level of care most wild animals don't enjoy. 'We had already been applying lotion,' to manage dryness, Wright told me. The elephant knew the drill: Once in the barn, she'd lumber up to a window with an opening for her ear and stick the appendage through. As far as zoo staff members could tell, the treatment helped. 'There's nothing magical' about other animals' skin, Leslie Easterwood, a large-animal veterinarian at Texas A&M University, told me: Bake it in the sun, and it will burn. Scientists have spotted whales suffering from sunburns; cats, dogs, horses—even alpacas, turtles, and penguins—can develop all kinds of skin cancers. Pigs, in particular, 'have skin most similar to humans,' Mitchell Song, a veterinary dermatologist based in Arizona told me. At Zoo Miami, keepers have spread mud on older, arthritic wild pigs who can't wallow as well as they did in their youth; they've also applied sunscreen to a babirusa, a species of swine native to Indonesia's forests, and to a Kunekune pig, Gwen Myers, the zoo's chief of animal health, told me. In some sunny places, vets commonly recommend sunscreen for pets and other domesticated creatures, especially light-colored dogs and horses. Steve Valeika, a veterinarian in North Carolina, advises the same for 'white cats that go outside.' This particular conundrum is one of our own making. 'You don't see a lot of white-skinned animals in the wild,' Anthea Schick, a veterinary dermatologist in Arizona, told me. Only thanks to generations of selective breeding have they become a frequent presence in and around people's homes. Of course, to sunscreen your pet, you have to … sunscreen your pet. Some pet owners, vets told me, are definitely flummoxed by the suggestion: 'It's not widely discussed,' Schick told me. Vets are more unified in recommending teeth brushing for cats—and most cat owners still just decide they'd rather not. But some animals would certainly benefit from block: Schick told me she's seen her fair share of badly burned dogs, especially after long bouts of sunbathing that scorch their bellies. 'We see a lot of sun-induced skin cancers that could be avoided,' she said. Pit bulls, Dalmatians, and other short-haired breeds are especially vulnerable; even long-haired white cats are sensitive around their eyes, their nose, and the tips of their ears. And Easterwood estimates that the majority of paint horses, left unprotected, will eventually develop skin issues. Squamous-cell-carcinoma cases make up the majority of her workload: 'I see it every single day,' she said. The vets I spoke with generally agreed: Don't bother with sprays, which a lot of animals find annoying or downright terrifying; reapply often, and well; it is way, way, way harder to sunscreen a cat than a dog, though some brave souls manage it. But although some vets recommended human sunscreens, formulated for kids or sensitive skin, others told me they preferred blends marketed for animals. (The FDA has dubbed just one pet sunscreen, made by a company called Epi-Pet and marketed to dogs and horses, 'FDA compliant'—not the same as FDA approval, which requires rigorous safety testing.) Several warned against zinc oxide, which can be toxic to animals if ingested in large quantities; others felt that zinc oxide was worth the risk, unless administered to a tongue-bathing cat. Regardless of the product they're offered, most animals generally aren't as eager as Indu to subject themselves to a human-led sun-protection ritual. And even she was usually plied with a five-gallon bucket of fruits and vegetables while her keepers tended her ears. At Zoo Miami, keeper Madison Chamizo told me she and her colleagues had to spend months training an okapi—an African mammal closely related to a giraffe—to accept caretakers gently scrubbing sunscreen onto her back with a modified Scotch-Brite dishwand, after she lost some patches of hair on her back to a fungal infection. But for creatures in very sunny parts of the world, the alternatives are, essentially, being cooped up indoors, kept away from windows, or wrestled into full-body sunsuits. (Some dogs don't mind; cats, once again, are unlikely to comply.) And some sun-related problems, sunscreen can't fix. Gary West, the Phoenix Zoo's vet, told me he suspects that UV glare has caused eye inflammation in some of his animals; Myers, in Miami, worries about the sensitive skin around some species' eyes. 'They're not really going to wear sunglasses for us,' Myers told me. So she and her colleagues have started to wonder: 'Gosh, is this an animal that we could put a sun visor on?' I spent 337 days in space working at NASA and left for a desk job. I don't regret giving up astronaut life.
This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Marshburn, a 64-year-old former NASA astronaut who is now a VP at Sierra Space. The following has been edited for length and clarity. I've spent a total of 337 days in space. During that time, I completed five spacewalks. Stepping out of the hatch, there was just this wide universe ahead of me and Earth 250 miles below. The spacewalks were daunting — some would say terrifying — but I felt privileged to be able to do them. While they were a great experience, I'm more than OK with not doing them anymore. These days, I work a desk job in the private sector instead. Are you someone who made an unconventional career move? Becoming an astronaut I fell in love with space in high school. I majored in physics at college, and got a graduate degree in engineering. I dreamed of working with NASA building spaceships. After completing a college thesis in biomedical engineering, I realized my strengths were more rooted in the medical world. I trained in emergency medicine and practiced for about 10 years. During that time, NASA was accepting applicants from outside physicians for flight surgeon roles, whose jobs would be to take care of astronauts. The NASA selection process varies depending on the role and the makeup of the corps. In my view, they look for people with technical expertise in something, a wide skill set, and the ability to communicate well on technical and non-technical topics. NASA is also interested in how candidates have pushed themselves outside of work and the calculated risks they've taken. When I applied in 1994, I looked at what accepted astronauts had done, made a list of what resonated, and started checking off the boxes. That's how I did it — but there's not one way to become an astronaut. I joined NASA in 1994. During that time, I spent three months learning Russian before heading to Star City, the cosmonaut training center outside Moscow. There are events in training, particularly in Russia, where there was absolute exhaustion, both physical and mental. I've never been as hyperthermic or hypothermic as I was in Russia for both winter survival and summer water survival training. At one point, during water survival training, I had a core body temperature of 104°F. Another challenge was being away from my family. My wife and I have one daughter. We communicated every day that we could, even if I was exhausted, they were tired, or we just didn't feel like it. We did it anyway, because then you get used to it and it becomes a habit. I spent the next decade as a flight surgeon. I supported one crew, then various crews, before supporting NASA's entire medical program for the International Space Station. I was selected to become an astronaut in 2004 and spent 18 years in the NASA Astronaut Corps. An emergency spacewalk taught me about preparation My first flight was in 2009 — a 15-day space shuttle mission to the International Space Station, or ISS. At the launchpad, there's a huge sense of excitement. At your first launch, there's some trepidation. It's like you're about to take the biggest final exam of your life. Typically, you don't get a lot of sleep, but there's a lot of laughter and anticipation. On that mission, I did three spacewalks. My second flight was in late 2012. I flew to the ISS aboard a Russian Soyuz. I had no spacewalks planned, but about three days before I was set to come back, in May 2013, there was an emergency — a leak of ammonia coolant. If you lose the coolant, the power system can overheat, and then you have to shut it down, which is a really big deal. Preparing for a spacewalk typically takes nine weeks, and we had a matter of hours. It taught me that preparation matters. Mission control had the plan. We just followed their lead, step by step. It was one of the best examples of teamwork I've ever had the privilege of being a part of. All the years of training and experience meant we were prepared and had the confidence to handle that situation. Transition to the private sector From 2021 to 2022, I was part of the SpaceX Crew-3 mission for about six months. It was my final mission, and the first for my crewmate, Kayla Barron. Once it was over, I knew I was ready to leave the astronaut corps. I was in my sixties. There were a lot of new, good people who needed to fly, and I didn't want to take their spots. In 2022, I entered the private sector when an opportunity at Sierra Space came up. I wanted to do work that would allow others to fly into space. The company has invested a lot of money in transportation to and from space and platforms for living in space. I enjoy the variety in my work days. I'm involved in business development and human-factor requirements, which help ensure that a space vehicle for humans keeps them safe and able to do their job without injury or undue physiological stress. This job is a little more sedate in the sense that I'm usually at a desk. I miss some of the more physical aspects of being an astronaut, but it did take its toll on me. I'm OK with being able to figure out what my body can endure on my own, rather than being told I'm going to spend three nights in freezing conditions in the Russian Siberian Outback. Any regret about no longer being an astronaut is extremely momentary. It's a fleeting feeling when I see my former colleagues and hear what they're up to. I've been able to bring a lot of lessons from NASA to my current role: leadership, team building, and the technical parts of humans in space. A desk job at Sierra Space is the right place at the right time for me.

SpaceX launch is delayed after widespread power outage scrubs mission with 45 seconds to spare
A SpaceX rocket launch planned for Tuesday afternoon at Vandenberg Space Force Base was forced to take a rain check after a widespread power outage scrubbed the liftoff, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. The power outage in the Santa Barbara region disrupted telecommunications at the Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center, creating a "no-go condition for launch," NASA said in post. The control center manages air traffic over 177,000 square miles of airspace including California's coast from L.A. to San Luis Obispo, the Ventura area and into the Pacific for about 200 miles, according to the FAA. The decision came just 45 seconds before the rocket was set to launch, with a SpaceX official calling, "Hold, hold, hold. ... We have aborted launch today due to airspace concerns." "The FAA took this action to ensure the safety of the traveling public," the administration said. The FAA also issued a ground stop at the Santa Barbara Airport on Tuesday due to the outage, the airport said in a statement. Flights were diverted and delayed. Power at the airport hadn't been restored as of about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a spokesperson, who said that the ground stop would be lifted once power was restored to the area. In addition, the outage disrupted 911 service throughout Santa Barbara County, according to KTLA. As for the SpaceX launch, the rocket and its payloads were still in good shape, NASA said. Aboard the rocket were two twin satellites, a part of NASA's TRACERS mission — Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites. The two satellites will study Earth's magnetosphere by determining how magnetic explosions send solar wind particles into Earth's atmosphere, and how those particles affect space technology and astronauts. The launch was rescheduled to Wednesday at 11:13 a.m., NASA said. It will take place at Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg.
