Central Banks Show No Sign of Slowing Their Rush to Gold as Geopolitical Tensions Intensify Amid Trump's Policies

Waleed Farouk Central banks around the world show no indication of slowing down their push into gold, as the political and economic turmoil resulting from former U.S. President Donald Trump's foreign policies continues to fuel demand for the precious metal. According to a research report by global investment firm Invesco, central banks are steadily expanding their gold holdings, with nearly 50% of monetary authorities planning to increase their gold allocations over the next three years. 'Amid rising uncertainty and limited currency diversification options, gold has re-emerged as a fundamental pillar for enhancing reserve resilience,' said Rod Ringrow, Head of Official Institutions at Invesco. 'Gold is valued not just for its traditional role as a safe haven, but also for its political neutrality — a critical factor as geopolitical risks rise,' he added. Trump's presidency triggered widespread volatility in financial markets. His announcement of 'Liberation Day' tariffs on April 2 had a sharp negative impact on investor sentiment. U.S. stock markets recorded their worst week since the COVID-19 crash, while Asian stocks suffered their steepest declines in decades. Commenting on current market risks, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon stated during the bank's quarterly earnings release last week: 'Significant risks remain — including tariffs and trade uncertainty, worsening geopolitical conditions, high fiscal deficits, and inflated asset prices.' Invesco's 13th edition of its Global Sovereign Asset Management Study (49 pages) quoted a central banker from Latin America as saying: 'Gold is a diversifier, but it is also a form of protection — a backstop when all else fails.' The study's findings align with a June survey conducted by the World Gold Council, which polled 72 central banks. It showed a record number of respondents expecting to increase their gold holdings over the next 12 months, with 43% indicating plans to boost reserves — up from 29% the previous year. Shaokai Fan, Head of Central Banks at the World Gold Council, said: 'Western countries have stopped selling gold, while emerging markets are accelerating purchases, aiming to catch up and build larger reserves.' Speaking specifically about 2024, Fan described central bank demand for gold as 'insatiable,' noting that purchases had exceeded 1,000 metric tons for the third year in a row. Central banks have become one of the primary forces driving the ongoing gold bull market, which has seen prices double since late 2022 — a trend that accelerated following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

India, China Continue to Dominate Egypt's Cotton Exports

Taarek Refaat The global demand for Egyptian cotton remains robust, with India and China continuing their dominance in the export market. From September 2024 to mid-July 2025, a total of 35.9 thousand tons of Egyptian seedless cotton (short-staple cotton) were exported to 17 Asian and European countries. According to a recent report from the Cotton Exporters Union of Alexandria, India led the charge by importing a significant 22,000 tons of Egyptian cotton. China followed closely behind, importing 5.75 thousand tons, while Pakistan imported around 3.8 thousand tons. The Top Export Destinations In addition to India and China, several other countries have shown interest in Egyptian cotton: Switzerland: 1,000 tons Vietnam: 572 tons Turkey: 575 tons Bangladesh: 458 tons Djibouti: 300 tons Thailand: 109 tons Bahrain: 205 tons Italy: 108 tons Germany: 491 tons Portugal: 96 tons Mexico: 47 tons Malaysia: 5 tons Japan: 12 tons Indonesia: 75 tons The report highlighted that Egyptian cotton exports are categorized into various types, with a strong focus on long-staple cotton varieties, especially the Giza 98, 95, 94, and 86 strains. In total, 32,500 tons of these long-staple cotton varieties were exported. Additionally, around 3.4 thousand tons of extra-long staple cotton varieties, such as Giza 93, 92, 96, 87, and 43, were shipped out to international markets. Notably, Giza 43 and Giza 93 are cultivated using organic methods, making them highly sought after in specialized markets, particularly in Germany, where these varieties are exported under specific contracts. Cotton Farming and Government Support The total area of land allocated for cotton cultivation in the 2024-2025 season is estimated to be around 311,000 feddans. In an effort to support local farmers, the government had initially set a guaranteed price for cotton at EGP 12,000 per qintar (a traditional unit of weight for cotton) in March of the previous year. However, the price was later reduced to EGP 10,000 per qintar. The auction process had originally started with a price of EGP 12,000 or the global price, whichever was higher. However, due to decreased demand from private companies, the government agreed to reduce the starting price to EGP 10,000 to attract more bidders. Despite the reduced starting price for cotton auctions, Egyptian cotton exports have faced a downturn. A report reveals that the quantity of cotton exports in the current year has dropped by approximately 70% compared to the same period last year. This decline is attributed to the higher opening prices at auctions earlier in the season, which led to a reduced participation rate from companies. The government's decision to lower the starting price by EGP 2,000 per qintar has been viewed as a positive step to boost the cotton export sector. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Gold Prices Fluctuate Globally Amid Political Uncertainty... Local Pound Gains 7,280 EGP Since Start of Year

Waleed Farouk Gold prices in Egypt saw a slight decline over the past week despite heightened volatility in global markets, amid growing geopolitical tensions and concerns over the independence of U.S. monetary policy. The price of 21-karat gold fell by 10 EGP, dropping from 4,660 to 4,650 EGP per gram. This decline coincided with a modest 0.1% drop in the global ounce price, which slipped from $3,355 to $3,350. Meanwhile, local prices for other purities were as follows: 24-karat: 5,314 EGP 18-karat: 3,986 EGP 14-karat: 3,100 EGP Gold sovereign (21- karat ): 37,200 EGP The local market remained relatively stable on Saturday amid the global market's weekend closure. The 21-karat gold price opened at 4,650 EGP, dipped briefly to 4,645 EGP, then closed again at 4,650 EGP. Strong Year-to-Date Gains Since the start of 2025, local gold prices have surged 24.3%, gaining around 910 EGP per gram (21-karat), rising from 3,740 EGP in early January to 4,650 EGP this week. The gold sovereign gained 7,280 EGP in the same period. On the global front, gold ounces jumped nearly 28%, rising by $726, from $2,624 to $3,350, after hitting a historic high of $3,500 on April 22. A Volatile Week Driven by Fed Signals and Inflation Data Global gold prices experienced a turbulent week, opening at $3,355, and gradually declining to a low of $3,312 by Thursday morning. The price made several attempts to break above $3,375 but failed to sustain momentum. Key drivers of price action throughout the week included: Wednesday: A sharp rally to $3,363 was triggered by rumors of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's resignation, but prices pulled back after the news was officially denied. Friday: Stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation expectations data pushed gold down to $3,350, despite intraday gains in the Asian and European sessions to $3,360. Politics and Central Bank Independence Weigh on Sentiment Gold markets have been affected by renewed global trade tensions, particularly between the U.S. and both the European Union and Asia. Concerns are also growing over the independence of U.S. monetary policy following reports that President Donald Trump may be considering replacing Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Although the White House later denied the rumors, such political pressure undermines confidence in the Fed's autonomy and enhances demand for gold as a safe haven. Fed Governor Christopher Waller expressed support for a rate cut in July, citing slowing labor market data. However, market expectations remain conservative, pricing in a total of just 45 basis points of easing for 2025. This limited policy shift has reduced gold's appeal as an inflation hedge in an environment of still-elevated yields. Cooling Inflation Expectations Bring Balance The University of Michigan's July survey showed a decline in long-term inflation expectations from 4% to 3.6%, and short-term expectations from 5% to 4.4%. This gives the Fed more flexibility and reduces the urgency for aggressive rate cuts. Despite its strong performance in 2025, gold's trajectory remains closely tied to developments in U.S. monetary policy, Fed communications, and geopolitical tensions. While political headlines continue to weigh on the U.S. dollar, they simultaneously enhance gold's appeal as a hedge, especially amid eroding trust in monetary institutions. Looking Ahead: Key Economic Events Next Week Financial markets are bracing for several critical events that may shape investor sentiment and central bank actions: Tuesday: Fed Chair Jerome Powell delivers an opening speech at a major event in Washington, with markets watching for signals on monetary policy direction. Wednesday: U.S. existing home sales data will be released — a key indicator of housing market activity and consumer confidence. Thursday: The European Central Bank announces its monetary policy decision, with expectations pointing to a rate hold. U.S. jobless claims and the preliminary S&P PMI data for the manufacturing and services sectors will be published. New home sales figures are also expected. Friday: The U.S. durable goods orders report is due — a leading indicator of business investment and economic growth momentum. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
