Petronas, Baker Hughes partner on Asia energy growth, transition

KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Nasdaq-listed energy technology firm Baker Hughes have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore business opportunities aimed at advancing Asia's energy expansion and transition goals.
Under the agreement, both companies will work together to enhance liquefied natural gas services and cross-border talent development, strengthening local operational capabilities across the region.
They will also explore digital and artificial intelligence-driven energy solutions, promote sustainable technologies in carbon capture, utilisation and storage, and together expand the use of biofuels and lubricants in the turbomachinery supply chain.
Petronas senior vice president of projects, technology and health, safety, security and environment Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof said the expanded partnership would enable both companies to accelerate decarbonisation and innovation in energy delivery.
"Our extended strategic partnership with Baker Hughes is poised to drive excellence in project delivery, decarbonisation, supply chain resilience, and technology adoption.
"It signifies what is possible when two industry leaders unite to foster innovation ecosystems and shape the future of energy. Furthermore, the setting up of an enhanced aeroderivative facility here is a positive development towards the region's cleaner energy pursuit," he said in a statement today.
Baker Hughes chairman and chief executive officer Lorenzo Simonelli said this collaboration is an important step to grow alongside customers in Asia-Pacific and also a localisation effort in developing reliable, secure and lower-carbon energy.
As a first step, the firm plans to expand its gas technology services facility in Malaysia to include a full aeroderivative gas turbine module repair service, covering disassembly, assembly, grinding, and testing capabilities, which will support over 600 installed gas turbines in the region.
Baker Hughes currently operates two turbomachinery facilities in Port Klang and a Kuala Lumpur-based iCenter that provides diagnostics for turbomachinery equipment.
The company is assessing the best location for its new expanded gas turbine services footprint in Malaysia.

Uber taps China's Baidu for robotaxis in Asia, Middle East

UBER Technologies Inc. and Baidu Inc. plan to launch robotaxis on the ride-sharing platform in several markets outside of the US and mainland China through a multiyear partnership. Baidu's autonomous vehicles will be available on the Uber app in Asia and the Middle East later this year, the companies said in a statement Tuesday. Thousands of vehicles will be deployed as part of the partnership, the companies said. Baidu, which runs one of the largest fleets of robotaxis in China, is the latest Chinese autonomous driving technology company to partner with Uber to launch its services overseas. Baidu's robotaxi service, Apollo Go, has provided more than 11 million public rides in more than a dozen cities globally, exceeding the 10 million rides by Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo as of late May. Baidu has also been eyeing an expansion of its services in Switzerland, Singapore and Malaysia. Other Chinese firms like US-listed WeRide Inc., Pony AI Inc. and Beijing Momenta Technology Co. have also struck agreements with Uber to offer robotaxis on the platform in some European and Middle Eastern markets in the years ahead. San Francisco-based Uber has made more than a dozen global partnerships with technology developers and automakers, including Waymo, as it positions itself as an investor and commercialization platform for driverless vehicles, rather than developing the technology in-house. Autonomous rides are currently available on the Uber app in Phoenix, Austin, Atlanta and Abu Dhabi thanks to those arrangements. –BLOOMBERG

Apple invests US$500mil in rare earths producer MP Materials

NEW YORK: Apple said on Tuesday it would invest US$500 million into rare earths mine operator MP Materials, as the iPhone maker seeks to localise its mineral supply chain. The investment is part of a broader push to bring the production of its coveted iPhones to the US and boost US manufacturing amid a push from the Trump administration to cut reliance on China. Rare earths are a group of 17 metals used to make magnets that turn power into motion. China halted rare earths exports in March following a trade spat with US President Donald Trump that showed some signs of easing late last month, even as broader tensions underscored demand for non-Chinese supply. Shares of Las Vegas-based MP Materials jumped 10 per cent to US$52.37 in premarket trading. MP last week agreed to a multibillion-dollar deal with the US Department of Defense to boost output of rare earth magnets and help loosen China's market control. Apple said the MP investment is part of its US$500 billion commitment to the US. The agreement includes plans for Apple to purchase US-made rare earth magnets from MP Materials' Texas facility. It would be the first supply deal for MP's magnets since the financial backstop agreement with Washington. MP already produces mined and processed rare earths and has said it expects to start commercial magnet production in its Texas facility by the end of this year. The two companies would build another factory in Texas to produce magnets and a new recycling facility in Mountain Pass, California, near the company's existing mine. Last week's deal with the US government includes a price floor for rare earths, designed to spur investment in domestic mines and processing plants, which has been lagging partly due to low prices set in China.

Nasdaq 100 futures also rose 0.58% to record highs, powered by a jump in Nvidia. (Wikimedia Commons pic) NEW YORK : Futures tied to the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 hit record highs today as the second-quarter (Q2) earnings season began and investors awaited upcoming inflation data that could influence the Federal Reserve's (Fed) policy moves. At 6.53am, S&P 500 E-minis were up 22.5 points, or 0.36% to reach an all-time high. Dow E-minis were down 32 points, or 0.07%. Nasdaq 100 futures also rose 0.58% to record highs, powered by a jump in Nvidia after the chip designer announced plans to restart sales of its H20 AI chip to China. The company's shares were up about 5% in premarket trading. The news also lifted other chipmakers, with Advanced Micro Devices rising 4.5%, Marvell Technology up 2.7% and US-listed shares of TSM gaining 2.3%. Wall Street kick-started another earnings season with major financial institutions reporting results. JPMorgan Chase's shares remained steady after the company lifted its net interest income forecast for 2025. Additionally, Wells Fargo's profit rose in Q2 as it set aside less money to shield for potential bad loans. However, its shares slipped 1.1%. Meanwhile, BlackRock's assets under management touched a new high, hitting US$12.53 trillion in Q2 on prospects of trade deals and interest-rate cuts in the US. Its shares were down 0.9%. Despite President Donald Trump's renewed tariff threats – this time aimed at Russia – markets largely brushed off the rhetoric, focusing instead on a breakthrough from negotiations with US trade partners. Hopes were buoyed after Trump signaled willingness to talk, following his weekend warning of 30% tariffs on the EU and Mexico starting Aug 1. Yesterday, all three indexes closed higher, with the Nasdaq finishing at a record high. All eyes are on the June consumer price report, due at 8.30am, that will allow investors to assess how Trump's tariffs have affected price pressures. Economists surveyed by Reuters expect headline inflation accelerated to 2.7% last month on a year-over-year basis, up from 2.4% in May, while core inflation is forecast to tick up to 3% from 2.8%. Elias Haddad, senior markets strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman, noted that the effect of tariffs on inflation has been muted, but stuck to the view that 'higher US levies is a downside risk to US growth and upside risk to inflation'. The odds of a July rate cut have faded, while markets are pricing in a roughly 60% chance of a move in September, according to CME FedWatch. Later in the day, at least four Fed officials, including Board governor Michael Barr, are scheduled to speak, potentially offering fresh clues on the central bank's next steps. Among other movers, Trade Desk surged 14.6% after the software firm was set to join the benchmark S&P 500 index.
