India's chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, had previously stated the move was rooted in workload management. Ahead of the tour in May, he revealed that Bumrah would only feature in three Tests, in line with recommendations from the BCCI medical team.
Captain Shubman Gill reaffirmed the rationale at the toss:
'Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch so we'll use him there.'
Having taken a five-wicket haul in the first Test while his teammates failed to deliver the decision to bench Bumrah shocked many analysts. After returning unbeaten on 114 after the end of the opening day's play, Gill continued to thrive on Edgbaston's benign surface with flamboyant strokeplay to torment England's bowling unit, bereft of its decorated quicks James Anderson and Stuart Broad. By pulling the ball away for a single off Josh Tongue, Gill animatedly celebrated his maiden double century. Gill became the first-ever Indian captain to reach the double ton against England in England, surpassing former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin's 179-run effort at Old Trafford in 1990. Akash earned a place in India's playing XI for the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham after the world's best, Jasprit Bumrah, was rested to manage his workload. In Bumrah's absence, Akash made a strong case for himself by scalping four crucial wickets in the first innings. He wreaked havoc with the new ball while bowling with Mohammed Siraj in tandem on a placid surface. And whenever I get a chance, I try to play with that mindset.' While Akash tantalised England batters, Siraj stole the show with a sizzling six-wicket haul. Akash's alliance with Siraj forced England to succumb to 407 and surrender a 180-run lead. The 28-year-old opened up about the conversation he shared with Siraj on the field and dissected the tactics they applied to reap success. 'In the ground, we were talking to each other when I was bowling from here, what was going on, what was not going on, when Siraj was bowling from there, what was going on, what was not going on and we were talking to each other that we have to keep the pressure and bowl in partnership,' he said.
