Its Like Portugal Resting Ronaldo: Left Bewildered, Dale Steyn Lashes At India For Benching Jasprit Bumrah

Legendary South African pacer Dale Steyn didn't hold back in his criticism of India's decision to leave Jasprit Bumrah out of the playing XI for the Edgbaston Test. Steyn left bewildered and drew a striking comparison, likening Bumrah's exclusion to a top striker being benched. Notably, Shubman Gill led India benched Jasprit Bumrah in the second test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham due to workload management. England is currently leading the five match Test series by 1-0 and this game is very important in context of the series.
Steyn, who himself has been one of the greatest test bowlers, called out the decision-
'So Portugal have the best striker in the world in Ronaldo and they chose not to play him. That's madness. That's like India having Bumrah and choosing not to play, umm, him… wait, oh, no, what! shit I'm confused,' he tweeted, underlining the sheer audacity of the move.

India's chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, had previously stated the move was rooted in workload management. Ahead of the tour in May, he revealed that Bumrah would only feature in three Tests, in line with recommendations from the BCCI medical team.
Captain Shubman Gill reaffirmed the rationale at the toss:
'Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch so we'll use him there.'
Having taken a five-wicket haul in the first Test while his teammates failed to deliver the decision to bench Bumrah shocked many analysts. Despite the blowback, coach Gautam Gambhir and Gill remained firm, opting to safeguard Bumrah's fitness for the Lord's Test. Bumrash has overbowled during Border Gavaskar Trophy that resulted in his injury and the ace pacer missing out Champions Trophy 2025 due to the injury. India learning from its past mistakes is looking to manage their champion player better this time. Head Coach Gautam Gambhir also stated about Bumrah during last match's press conference that it is decided that Bumrh will play three Tests and there is a lot of cricket coming forward. India closed Day 1 at 310 for 5, thanks to a second successive ton from Gill and an aggressive yet composed 87 from Yashasvi Jaiswal

"This is the beginning of him...": Shubman Gill's childhood coach on his heroic 200 against England

Mohali (Punjab) [India], July 4 (ANI): Sukhwinder Tinkku, childhood coach of Indian test skipper Shubman Gill, praised him for his superb double hundred in the second test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. He said Gill's performance was not a surprise for him and felt this is just the beginning of him; he will make more records. While speaking to ANI Sukhwinder Tinkku said, 'Shubman Gill's performance is not a surprise for me. I have been watching him since childhood, and the improvement he shows in the game, and the way his mind works in the game. This is the beginning of him; he will make more records... I saw this potential in him that he will become a big player.' The Cricket fraternity was left enchanted by India Test captain Gill's sizzling double hundred on Day 2 of the second Test against England in Birmingham. After returning unbeaten on 114 after the end of the opening day's play, Gill continued to thrive on Edgbaston's benign surface with flamboyant strokeplay to torment England's bowling unit, bereft of its decorated quicks James Anderson and Stuart Broad. By pulling the ball away for a single off Josh Tongue, Gill animatedly celebrated his maiden double century. Gill became the first-ever Indian captain to reach the double ton against England in England, surpassing former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin's 179-run effort at Old Trafford in 1990. The 25-year-old strokeplayer also became the first Asian captain with a double century in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia (SENA), the previous best score being 193 by Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan at Lord's in 2011. With a flurry of boundaries after the milestone, he leapfrogged past legendary Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at The Oval in 1979 to have the highest-ever individual score by an Indian in England. He is only the sixth Indian to score a 250-plus score in Tests, joining the elite company of Virender Sehwag, who did it four times, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Karun Nair and Virat Kohli. Gill is the first Indian to do so outside of the Indian subcontinent; the previous best was Sachin's masterclass of 241* against Australia at Sydney in 2004. He joined Rahul Dravid (217 at The Oval in 2002) and Sunil Gavaskar (221 at The Oval in 1979) to become the third player to score a double ton for India in England against England in Tests. Gill also surpassed Kohli's 254* against South Africa in 2019 to have the highest score ever by an Indian captain. Gill also became the third Indian captain with a 150-plus Test score before turning 26, after Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (twice) and Sachin Tendulkar. (ANI)

"Don't know if I'll play": Akash Deep on bowling at Lord's after heroics in Birmingham

Birmingham [UK], July 5 (ANI): Akash Deep, who spearheaded India's pace attack for the Shubman Gill-led side with elegance, is unaware of the likelihood of returning to the final XI for the third Test of the five-match series at the 'Home of Cricket', Lord's. Akash earned a place in India's playing XI for the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham after the world's best, Jasprit Bumrah, was rested to manage his workload. In Bumrah's absence, Akash made a strong case for himself by scalping four crucial wickets in the first innings. He wreaked havoc with the new ball while bowling with Mohammed Siraj in tandem on a placid surface. He removed series opener POTM Ben Duckett for a five-ball duck and, on the next delivery, outfoxed Ollie Pope to punch his return ticket for a golden duck on the second day. On the third day, Akash breached Harry Brook's (158) defence and rattled the timber to break the record 303-run partnership that the English sensation stitched with Jamie Smith (184*). He then dished out an away swinger to end Chris Woakes' time on the crease on 5(17) to finish with figures of 4/88. Despite his heroics and Bumrah's return confirmed at Lord's, Akash's prospect of bowling at Lord's is clouded in uncertainty. 'We have only two days for this Test match, and this match is very important for us to win. So, I am not thinking about the third match at all. I believe that I have to put my energy in these two days. After that, I will consider it. The team will decide whether I will play or not. No, not at all. I don't know if I'll play. The team makes this decision. We get to know one day before the game,' Akash told reporters after the end of the day's play. Since making his debut in Ranchi against England in February last year, Akash's opportunities have been limited. Before breathing fire with his scorching spells at Edgbaston, Akash played two Tests in a five-match series against Australia, twice in three home games against New Zealand, and both games against Bangladesh. Amid his inconsistent run, Akash remains unfazed and prepared to grasp whatever opportunity that comes his way and said, 'I don't think like that. I feel that when the team needs me, I have to prepare for that. I have to be ready. I don't think like that. I don't get continuity. I prepare for the time I get. And whenever I get a chance, I try to play with that mindset.' While Akash tantalised England batters, Siraj stole the show with a sizzling six-wicket haul. Akash's alliance with Siraj forced England to succumb to 407 and surrender a 180-run lead. The 28-year-old opened up about the conversation he shared with Siraj on the field and dissected the tactics they applied to reap success. 'In the ground, we were talking to each other when I was bowling from here, what was going on, what was not going on, when Siraj was bowling from there, what was going on, what was not going on and we were talking to each other that we have to keep the pressure and bowl in partnership,' he said. 'Whether we get wickets or not, we have to bowl in areas and make runs from there. We will not give such runs. So, this was our plan. So, it was easy for me that the run was not going from both sides and I was able to bowl openly,' he added. India ended the third day on a high despite Yashavi Jaiswal's fiery 28-run cameo, which concluded early. KL Rahul made the most of Birmingham's batting-friendly nature, propelled India to 64/1 in 13 overs and extended India's lead to 244 runs. (ANI)
