Pact inked to explore hospitality projects at Muscat airport
Muscat – Oman Airports has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysian engineering and property group WCT Berhad to explore development and investment opportunities in and around Muscat International Airport.
The agreement aims to establish strategic cooperation between the two sides to exchange expertise and develop key projects that enhance commercial and entertainment offerings for visitors and travellers.
The MoU was signed by Ahmed bin Saeed al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports, and Tony Chan, CEO of WCT Berhad.
As part of the collaboration, a series of workshops and discussions will be held with the Oman Airports team to formulate an integrated master plan focused on optimising the land surrounding Muscat International Airport.
The project will prioritise expansion of commercial, hospitality and entertainment facilities with a view to increasing investment returns and contributing to Oman's real estate development sector. It is also expected to create joint ventures that enhance the area's long-term value and appeal.
WCT Berhad brings expertise in infrastructure development with a portfolio that includes Formula 1 circuits, mass rapid transit systems, airports, highways, ports and government buildings. The company also owns two airport malls at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 and SkyPark Terminal in Selangor.

Passengers at Oman airports drop 3% till May 2025
Muscat – Passenger traffic through Oman's four main airports dropped 3% in the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to preliminary data released by National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). A total of 5,790,010 passengers travelled through Muscat, Salalah, Suhar and Duqm airports in 2025 till the end of May, down from 5,968,622 during the same period last year. Muscat International Airport handled 5,207,005 passengers during the period, a decline of 3.5% from 5,393,373 in 2024. The number of flights also dropped 7.5% to 37,307 from 40,322 in the same timeframe. In contrast, Salalah Airport recorded a 6.7% increase in passenger numbers to 557,298 by the end of May, up from 522,224 in 2024. However, flight operations at Salalah saw a marginal dip of 0.3%, totalling 3,717 flights compared to 3,730 in 2024. Suhar Airport reported a significant decline in passenger traffic, with only 336 passengers handled in 2025 till the end of May – a 98.8% drop from 27,350 during the same period last year. The number of flights also fell 63.7%, with 82 flights recorded compared to 226 in 2024. Duqm Airport registered a slight decrease in operations, with 256 flights compared to 260 a year earlier. Passenger traffic dropped 1.2% to 25,371 by the end of May this year from 25,675 in 2024. The NCSI data also showed that Indian nationals were the most frequent travellers through Muscat International Airport in 2025 till the end of May, accounting for 193,861 passengers – including 85,447 arrivals and 108,414 departures. Omani nationals followed with 108,916 passengers – 54,086 arrivals and 54,830 departures. Pakistani nationals ranked third, with a total of 46,930 passengers, comprising 21,267 arrivals and 25,663 departures.
