MPOC's Global Trade Mission Spurs RM188.5 Million In Potential Palm Oil Deals

The Malaysian Palm Oil Council's (MPOC) flagship Trade Networking Visit 2025 has generated an estimated RM188.5 million in potential sales through intensive business engagements and strategic outreach.
Held from July 8 to 10 in Kuala Lumpur, the annual event attracted 56 international buyers from 23 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), ASEAN, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, regions playing a growing role in Malaysia's palm oil export strategy.
The centrepiece of the programme was the BizMatch session on July 10, where over 400 pre-scheduled meetings connected 25 leading Malaysian suppliers with foreign buyers, fostering new commercial ties and reinforcing confidence in Malaysia's palm oil sector.
'The positive response to BizMatch confirms the value of targeted market engagement. These regions remain central to our diversification efforts as global demand continues to shift,' said MPOC Chief Executive Officer Belvinder Sron.
Sron added that delegates also visited Sime Darby Plantation's Eco Garden on Carey Island to observe sustainable cultivation practices and toured Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd's Alami Edible Oils' downstream facilities, showcasing Malaysia's integrated supply chain and commitment to quality.
An industry dialogue with Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani offered further insight into policy priorities, market trends and opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
Participants praised the event for its impact and depth of engagement, prompting MPOC to consider expanding the initiative.
'We are exploring the possibility of holding similar programmes more regularly in high-potential markets,' Sron added.

PETALING JAYA: The latest industrial production index (IPI) data tracking manufacturing, mining and electricity output released last week shows that the Malaysian economy is on course for slower growth, as external challenges centring around trade and geopolitics continue to weigh on industrial activities. The IPI registered a slight growth of 0.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) in May after a 2.7% expansion in April, which was below market expectations for an increase of 2.1% y-o-y, with analysts projecting moderate growth this year against a backdrop of global trade uncertainty and early indications of improvements in manufacturing-sector conditions. TA Research said the latest IPI data points to a likely moderation in overall economic growth for the second quarter of 2025 (2Q25) despite the manufacturing sector remaining a key driver of gross domestic product expansion, supported by domestic demand and front-loading activity to get ahead of tariffs. The data remained mixed, as manufacturing output, which grew an average 4.2% y-o-y in the April-to-May period, suggested sustained underlying momentum while the manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI), which tracks the sector's market sentiment, improved to 49.3 in June from 48.8 in May. A reading below 50 signals a contraction. The research house believes the manufacturing PMI reading, the highest since late 2022, signals a gradual improvement in business sentiment despite the index remaining in contraction territory. Malaysia's manufacturing PMI has been in continuous contraction since last June. It maintained IPI growth of 2% y-o-y compared with the 3.7% expansion last year. 'Looking ahead, industrial activity is expected to remain highly sensitive to global trade dynamics, domestic demand conditions, and fluctuations in energy prices, particularly amid ongoing uncertainty over US trade policy. 'Ongoing trade tensions, particularly those involving the United States, pose notable downside risks for Malaysia's export-oriented industries by disrupting supply chain continuity and undermining export competitiveness,' it added. BIMB Research, which retained an IPI growth forecast of 2.9%, pointed to elevated risks for export-heavy categories such as electrical and electronics products, raw materials, and machinery, with the Aug 1 US tariff deadline and the possible expiry of China-related tariff suspensions on Aug 12 as key turning points.

The Deputy Prime Minister said this decision was prompted by uncertainties surrounding the latest US policies regarding foreign students, which have placed restrictions on Mara-sponsored Malaysian students bound for the United States. 'We have received offers from universities in New Zealand which are willing to accept our students. 'The offer does not only apply to Mara-sponsored students but may include those sponsored under the Public Service Department, PETRONAS and other agencies,' he told reporters at the Asean-New Zealand Business Council Engagement session held here yesterday. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysian High Commissioner to New Zealand Mazita Marzuki has been tasked with seeking reasonable tuition discounts from New Zealand universities for these students. The sponsored students are likely to pursue studies in green technology and renewable energy. 'New Zealand is highly advanced in green technology with 87% of its energy needs coming from renewable energy. 'We need to expose our engineering students to new aspects of these technologies,' he added. Last month during his working visit to London, Ahmad Zahid announced that Mara-sponsored students initially bound for US universities this year would most likely head to the United Kingdom instead. At that time, three UK universities had agreed to provide up to 20% tuition fee discounts for Mara-sponsored students. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the National TVET Committee chairman, also said the government was looking at reviving the student exchange programme between Malaysia and New Zealand. 'At present, there are 690 Malaysians studying in New Zealand but only 20 from New Zealand in Malaysia,' he said. He suggested that New Zealanders could be offered three- to six-month courses under TVET skills training programmes. He said there were currently 1,398 TVET institutions in Malaysia offering various technical and skills training courses.
