CM Mohan Yadav to distribute free bicycles to MP students today
More than 4.30 lakh eligible students enrolled in government-run schools in Madhya Pradesh will get bicycles in the current academic year 2025-26, according to the Madhya Pradesh School Education Department.
Free bicycle distribution scheme for students will cost an amount of Rs 195 crore to the government. The Madhya Pradesh government had introduced the scheme in 2006 to provide free bicycles to students, particularly tribal girls, to encourage them to continue their education, especially after Class 8.
Initially, the scheme, implemented by the Tribal Affairs Department, aimed to reduce dropout rates and ensure girls can access secondary and higher secondary schools. However, later the scheme was modified and students from all social castes were added under the eligible category, and the students are selected on the basis of distance from home to school.
Students who travel more than two kilometres to reach school are eligible to avail the benefits.
Under the scheme, free bicycles are provided to eligible students for study facilities on first admission in Classes 6 and 9. Reports suggested that 4.50 lakh students were given bicycles in the previous academic year 2024-25, while 4.7 lakh students in the academic year 2023-24.
On this occasion, Chief Minister Yadav will inaugurate the newly constructed, fully equipped building of Kamla Nehru Sandipani Vidyalaya.
The CM posted about the event on his official X handle: "On the occasion of Guru Purnima festival, I will inaugurate the distribution of free bicycles to students at an event organized in Bhopal today..." He also shared a video clip.
Built at a cost of Rs 36 crore, the state-of-the-art campus includes modern laboratories, a well-stocked library, and an auditorium.
The school is also equipped with smart digital classrooms designed to deliver high-quality education. Additional facilities include free coaching for competitive exam preparation, career counselling, and indoor and outdoor sports infrastructure.
To support students commuting from distant areas, a free transport facility has been arranged for children residing within a 10-kilometre radius of the school.

Anti-sacrilege bill will deter future desecration of scriptures: Punjab CM
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday said the Anti-sacrilege Bill will ensure that no such heinous crime takes place in the future by making provision of the sternest punishment against culprits. Mann stated this while participating in a debate on the 'Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill 2025' on the concluding day of the Special Session of the Punjab Assembly here. The House on Tuesday decided to refer the Bill, which was introduced on Monday, to a Select Committee of the Assembly for seeking views of all stakeholders. Mann said the Guru Granth Sahib is the living Guru, who is highly revered by one and all across the globe. He said the 'Guru Granth Sahib' is a lighthouse of peace and tranquility for the entire mankind, and the Punjab government is "fully alive" to the deep emotional hurt caused by the incidents of sacrilege against the holy 'granths' in the past. He said it is unfortunate that some forces had even gone to an extent of committing the most heinous sin against mankind through desecration of the 'Guru Granth Sahib', a holy book revered by the Sikh community. Mann said the 'Guru Granth Sahib' is an eternal Guru for mankind and no one could ever tolerate the dastardly act of sacrilege. Likewise, he said the 'Bhagavad Gita', 'Quran', 'Bible' and other 'granths' are also respected by humanity for showing a way of life to them. Mann said every devout Sikh is deeply connected with the 'Shabad Guru' - in the form of the 'Guru Granth Sahib' and Gurmukhi, which means originating from the mouth of Guru. Mann said the sacrilege incidents had bruised the psyche of every Punjabi in general and every Sikh in particular. In the absence of harsh punishment against this "unpardonable crime", there was no end to these incidents due to which the Bill was necessitated, he said. According to the Bill, any person found guilty of sacrilege may face imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life. The guilty shall also be liable to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh, which may extend up to Rs 10 lakh. Those attempting to commit the offence may be sentenced to three to five years and shall also be liable to pay a fine which may extend up to Rs 3 lakh, as per the Bill. Individuals found abetting the crime will be punished in accordance with the offence committed. Under the Bill, offence means any sacrilege, damage, destruction, defacing, disfiguring, de-colouring, de-filling, decomposing, burning, breaking or tearing of any holy scripture or part thereof.

Belur criticises MP over Sigandur bridge inauguration row
Shivamogga: A day after the launch of India's second-longest cable-stayed bridge at Sagar in Shivamogga, Sagar MLA Belur Gopal Krishna criticised Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra. Action to be taken against debris dumping and slum expansion in Mahim creek and Ganpat Patil Nagar in Mumbai, says minister
Mumbai: Over the next three days, action will be taken against debris dumping in the Mahim creek and Ganpat Patil Nagar, Dahisar, said revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule in the legislative council on Tuesday. The issue of debris dumping in the mangroves at Ganpat Patil Nagar and the expansion of slums was raised through a supplementary question by BJP MLC Pravin Darekar, who demanded an investigation into the expansion of slums near the creeks. In reply, Bawankule said the revenue department has begun mapping all areas along creeks, and action was already taken in a dozen places. "A task force is being set up, and only tolerated structures up to 2011 and those built under the PM Awaas Yojana will not be touched, while all others will be removed. Earlier, action would be taken either by the revenue department or the police department. They did not act in consonance. Now we have made a policy that action will be taken jointly by the revenue as well as the police departments. Revenue will impose a penalty, and the case will be registered by the police," said Bawankule. On the issue of dumping in the Ulhas and Waldhuni river, Bawankule said a fine of Rs 10 crore has been imposed on the Satsang organisation that carried out the illegal dumping.
