Penix brings more confidence into 1st full season as Falcons starter following 3-game 2024 audition
Penix said after Thursday's opening practice of training camp he feels more confident entering his second season because he was given his first three starts to close the 2024 season after Kirk Cousins was benched.
'Yeah, it's very important,' Penix said. 'Just knowing, just being able to go out there and get those games with full-speed reps. It instills confidence, knowing I can go out there and do the same thing that you saw in college and all my life. So, you know, just I would say biggest thing is confidence.'
The Falcons were 1-2 with Penix as the starter to finish 8-9 for their seventh consecutive losing season. Though the switch to the rookie didn't produce a playoff berth, Penix said the experience was important for his 2025 outlook and his chemistry with the offense.
'So Week 1 this year won't be the first time I'm on the field with the starters in a game-time situation,' Penix said. 'I feel like that was good as well. So the guys around me as well know what they're going to get out of me.'
Penix spoke with confidence when he was asked about the potential for an offense that returns running back Bijan Robinson, wide receiver Drake London, tight end Kyle Pitts and an experienced offensive line.
'We should be the best in the league with the guys we've got around us,' Penix said. 'We should be unstoppable. So that's that's our goal. We want to be No. 1 in all categories.'
Penix spent extra time throwing to Pitts and London this offseason and had Pitts on his mind when he spoke with reporters Thursday.
'You see we got KP the ball today,' Penix said to open the interview session. 'There's going to be a lot of that.'
Penix has the confidence of his teammates as the new leader of the offense.
'He's just that guy and he goes out there and he does the same thing every day and that's work hard,' London said, adding Penix 'has a cannon' as a passer.
Cousins returns in a backup role after disclosing on the Netflix docuseries 'Quarterback' that he played through pain in his right arm in the second half of the season, in part to avoid losing his job to Penix. Cousins threw eight interceptions with no touchdowns in a stretch of four straight losses following a 6-3 start and insisted through the streak he was healthy.
Morris said Thursday the comment by Cousins in the Netflix show was 'kind of old news' and added 'we addressed that when it was happening. ... Nothing was a shocker.'
Cousins, 36, signed a four-year, $180 million contract last March that included $100 million guaranteed. General manager Terry Fontenot has said the team is comfortable with Cousins as the backup to Penix. Morris said in the offseason 'we won't hold him back if the opportunity presents himself' to be traded to a team looking for a starter.
Morris said 'it feels more settling, more at ease' as he begins his second season as coach.
'I think it feels even more familiar than it had felt before,' he said. 'Being back the second time, being back with the same people ... I'll come back with the entire offensive staff coming back.'
Morris said all players reported on Wednesday and all are on schedule to be available for the season. Some players, including linebacker Troy Andersen (knee), won't be exposed to all contact at the start of camp. Andersen was placed on the physically unable to perform list. Also, inside linebacker Malik Verdon, defensive lineman LaCale London and defensive back Cobee Bryant were placed on the non-football injury/illness list and defensive back Kevin King was released.
The team's first practice in pads will be on Tuesday.
Right tackle Kaleb McGary showed off a new short haircut and said he is 'all good' after having bone spurs removed from his ankle in an arthroscopic procedure.
Fans were invited to the opening practice, producing a long line at the gate surrounding the practice facility an hour before the session.
Morris said he is 'really fired up about this team, really fired up about this organization, really fired up about the fan base.'

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for an exciting 2025 NFL season, which features some new faces within the organization poised to get the franchise back to its winning ways. That starts with the hiring of Ben Johnson as head coach, as well as overhauling the interior offensive line, adding pieces on defense and a potenital impactful rookie draft class. Every day from now right up through training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Bears for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025 and tackle the biggest question facing them this year. Next up at No. 17 is defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, who will serve a key role along the defensive interior and as a leader. Background Position: Defensive tackle Age: 32 Experience: 11th season 2025 cap hit: $7 million 2024 recap Grady Jarrett played his first 10 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons after being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft. During his career, Jarrett has been a model of consistency, production, hard work and leadership. He's also overcome his share of adversity, including suffering a season-ending knee injury that cut his 2023 season way short. Jarrett made his return to the gridiron in 2024, and he once again showed why he's a vital member of that Falcons defensive line, even if he wasn't as dominant as he was before his ACL injury. Last season, Jarrett started in all 17 games and totaled 53 tackles, including nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 12 QB hits. Jarrett was a surprising roster cut just ahead of free agency, and he was well-respected and beloved by coaches and teammates. But ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the Falcons offered a new deal to Jarrett to keep him in Atlanta, but Jarrett opted to test the free agent market. The Falcons ultimately saved $16 million in salary cap space. 2025 outlook Shortly after Jarrett was released by the Falcons, the Bears wasted no time signing him to a three-year, $43.5 million deal to anchor the interior defensive line. Jarrett comes to Chicago with a wealth of knowledge and experience that will make him a vital mentor for young players, including Gervon Dexter Sr., as well as his proven track record as a run defender and interior pass rusher. Jarrett was the first addition for new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who witnessed Jarrett up close during his time with the New Orleans Saints and played the Falcons twice a year. Jarrett is expected to start along the interior, alongside Dexter, to anchor a defensive line that will be key to the defense's success. While Dexter had a down year in 2024, coming off a torn ACL, another year of rest and rehab on that knee should have the soon-to-be 32-year old veteran primed to contribute in a big way in 2025. Big question: What will be Jarrett's impact on defense? The Bears committed significant resources to an aging veteran defensive tackle who's less than two years removed from a torn ACL, so they're banking on an impact -- both production-wise and from a leadership standpoint. Jarrett is a former All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler that figures to be a valuable contributor in Dennis Allen's aggressive defense. Jarrett developed into one of the game's best interior defenders, and Chicago needs that along their defensive line. He's expected to start along the interior with third-year pro Gervon Dexter Sr. with Andrew Billings rotating in. While Jarrett has proven himself as a dominant run defender and interior pass rusher -- something the Bears hope translates -- his value as a leader is just as important. Next up at No. 7 is Drew Dalman, who the Bears invested in to anchor the offensive line and turn their luck around at center. Background Position: Center Age: 26 Experience: 5th season 2025 cap hit: $13.64 million 2024 recap Dalman took a big step in his development with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024, where he had his best season yet -- and it happened at just the right moment with him slated to become a free agent. While Dalman has always been an elite run blocker, he made strides in pass protection, earning the lowest pressure rate of his career (3.7%). Overall, Dalman earned a 78.8 grade from Pro Football Focus, where he graded out as the fourth-best center in 2024. Unfortunately, Dalman only played in nine games. He landed on injured reserve with an ankle injury following a Week 3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, and he returned in Week 13, where he played the final six games of the season. 2025 outlook New Bears head coach Ben Johnson made it clear that he wanted to build from the trenches, which is why the team prioritized the offensive line in a huge way. After trading for All-Pro guard Joe Thuney and guard Jonah Jackson, Chicago wasted no time signing Dalman to a three-year, $42 million contract at the start of free agency. Dalman replaces Coleman Shelton, who started all 17 games in 2024, at a position that's snakebitten the Bears. Protecting second-year quarterback Caleb Williams is the top priority this season, and Dalman will play a key role in Williams' success. Dalman will serve as the quarterback of the offensive line, where he'll help with setting projections and relieving some of the pre-snap burden. Solid communication will be key for Williams and Dalman, and the quarterback-center relationship will be just as important as head coach and quarterback. Big question: Will Dalman finally be the answer at center? The Bears have been searching for Olin Kreutz's replacement for the better part of two decades. While Cody Whitehair was a solid center, the position has snakebitten this franchise for some time. After signing Coleman Shelton to a cheap, one-year deal, Chicago invested heavily in the center position with the free-agent signing of Dalman, who was a top-five graded center by PFF. While no one's expecting Dalman to be the next coming of Kreutz, who has a case for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, stability would be a big win.
