Brothers in arms: PM Shehbaz addresses Pakistan-Turkiye-Azerbaijan Trilateral Summit
He said this in his address to Pakistan-Turkiye-Azerbaijan Trilateral Summit, alongside presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ilham Aliyev.
Addressing Azerbaijan president, the PM thanked him for the hospitality shown to him and his delegation, noting that today's summit 'reflects the meeting of hearts and souls of genuine friends and sincere well-wishers'.
The premier further said that we are now eagerly looking forward to taking our trilateral partnership to new heights that 'would be in consonance with the wishes and desires of our people'.

'This would be no surprise to anyone as Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Turkiye are bound together by deep historical, cultural and spiritual ties forged through centuries of shared values and mutual support.'
'This historical relationship has been further strengthened as we have stood by each other, whether it be on Karabakh, Kashmir or northern Turkish Cyprus. Our strength lies in our solidarity and mutual respect,' the PM said.
Addressing Erdogan, PM Shehbaz felicitated the Turkish president for 'very skillfully resolving the issue' of the PKK, referring to the Kurdish rebels' recent decision to disband.
'That goes to explain in volumes, my brother, your diplomatic skills to resolve this issue and by virtue of this, you have earned a high place and influence not only in the region, but beyond.'
Referring to the recent conflict with India, PM Shehbaz said, 'We could not but be mesmerised by the intensity of the fervour and enthusiasm of our common citizens during Pakistan's recent conflict with India.'
He noted that India 'not only failed to bring any credible evidence against Pakistan but also rejected our sincere and generous offer of a neutral, transparent investigation into the so-called incident in Pahalgam by any international body'.
'The world we live in faces numerous grave challenges, including armed conflict, climate change, diseases and economic crises. This is why the three of us have assembled here today, opting for compassion while rejecting conflict. We are confident that patience and wisdom will ultimately usher in peace and prosperity.

During a visit to the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC), the prime minister said that an international court (Permanent Court of Arbitration) announced a supplemental order, emphasizing that India had no authority to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty unilaterally. "But the enemy has certain evil designs against Pakistan and wanted to take steps against the waters treaty," he said, adding in view of this, the government had decided to fast-track the non-controversial water storage capacity projects under Water Accord with the provinces, as the same had a legal provision in this regard. He stressed that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had a critical role in this regard also. The prime minister directed that weather warnings and calamity threats should be regularly issued through SMS and phone messages in collaboration with PTA. In his remarks telecast on national TV channels, the prime minister recalled the devastating impact of the 2022 floods, which caused widespread suffering across the country. The prime minister said that Pakistan, unfortunately, was among the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters such as cloudbursts, despite having contributed minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions. He noted that in 2022, Pakistan suffered more than any other country due to climate-related disasters. The prime minister also highlighted the threat posed by glacial melting triggered by heatwaves, emphasizing the need for the highest level of preparedness. Referring to the recent tragedy in Swat, where precious lives were lost, he said the incident had cast a pall of gloom over the entire nation. He stressed the need for an honest review of the event and directed the formulation of a comprehensive prevention mechanism in collaboration with provincial governments to avert such tragedies in the future. He also ordered the compilation of a detailed report on the incident. The prime minister further noted that in the aftermath of the 2022 floods, relevant ministers engaged in negotiations for grants and public-private partnerships to support the development of resilient infrastructure across the country. The prime minister appreciated the facility of NEOC and expressed the hope that the relevant authorities would fully utilize this resilient platform for the progress of the country's economy and social sectors. He also assured complete support of the government in strengthening the institute and its capacity building. The prime minster further appreciating the NDMA said that he was glad it had organized relief operations seamlessly to Turkiye and Myanmar. He hoped that this world class facility was connected with the provinces, and with interventions like early warning system had been conveying the provinces the real time information. During his visit, the prime minister was given a briefing by NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik over the current monsoon season, the floods situation and the precautionary measures taken in this regard. Cultural institutions The premier reiterated his government's strong commitment to preserving and enhancing the role of national institutions dedicated to science, literature, history, and culture, dispelling any speculation about their closure or merger under ongoing rightsizing efforts. Speaking during a meeting with PML-N parliamentary party leader in the Senate Irfan Siddiqui, the premier emphasized the crucial role such institutions play in shaping the intellectual and cultural fabric of society, a statement from the PM Office said. "The sources of knowledge and literature are the soul of society. We have a great capital of civilization and culture, of which the entire nation is rightly proud. The government is not considering implementing any proposal to close or merge national institutions of scientific, literary, historical and cultural importance. On the contrary, we will try to make these institutions stronger, effective and efficient," the premier said. Iranian embassy visit The prime minister expressed his deepest condolences to the people and Government of Iran, while reaffirming Pakistan's sympathy and solidarity with Iran during this difficult time. He paid rich tributes to the resilience and courage of the Iranian nation while offering his prayers for those who had embraced martyrdom, as well as for the swift recovery of the injured. The prime minister visited Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to sign the condolence book opened by the Iranian mission to honour the martyrs and injured Iranians during the recent Israeli aggression against Iran. He was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, SAPM Tariq Fatemi and the foreign secretary, the PM Office Media Wing said in a statement. The premier was received by Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghaddam and his senior colleagues. PM assails India for weaponising water
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday accused India of weaponising water, warning that New Delhi could not unilaterally back out of the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) – a move Islamabad views as a direct threat to regional stability. 'The enemy is trying to use water as a weapon,' Sharif said, in an unmistakable reference to India, during a visit to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). 'We will not allow unilateral action on the Indus Waters Treaty.' Sharif's remarks come amid rising concerns in Islamabad over India's recent posture on transboundary water rights, a flashpoint that could escalate further under mounting climate stress and geopolitical rivalry. Amid the warning, Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's resolve to build non-controversial water reservoirs including the long-delayed Diamer-Bhasha Dam, using its own resources. 'Pakistan will not beg. We will build, and we will do so with dignity,' he added. He also delivered a scathing critique of climate injustice, noting that Pakistan contributes little to global emissions yet finds itself on the frontline of climate catastrophe. 'We are now on the map of nations vulnerable to cloudbursts and glacial bursts – events we did not cause, but must now survive,' he said. Sharif's comments came against the backdrop of last week's devastating floods in Swat Valley, which killed at least 49 people and left dozens injured. He called the tragedy 'a national wound,' demanding a detailed review that rises above political fault lines. 'The entire nation mourns Swat incident. Let this not be buried in bureaucracy or politics,' he said, directing NDMA to compile a comprehensive report and design coordinated disaster strategies with provincial authorities. Sharif praised the modernisation of the NDMA following the catastrophic 2022 floods, which he said wiped out homes and crops over thousands of acres. He lauded the agency's role in early warning and risk awareness but stressed the need for greater preparedness amid worsening climate shocks. Touring the NEOC's upgraded facilities, he promised federal government's support to scale up disaster response and resilience. He said he had already instructed Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik to pursue global grants and public-private partnerships to fund resilient infrastructure – 'not loans, but investments,' he emphasised. During the meeting, an in-depth discussion took place regarding the proposed Rs. 100 billion subsidy package aimed at promoting the use of electric vehicles in Pakistan. Haroon Akhtar Khan highlighted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision of this substantial subsidy reflects a commitment to the dual goals of public welfare and environmental protection. Pakistan launches National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025-30 The SAPM noted that the successful implementation of the NEV Policy can play a vital role in reducing smog and air pollution across the country. He emphasized that it will not only help improve air quality but also significantly reduce Pakistan's reliance on imported oil, ultimately decreasing the nation's multi-billion-dollar oil import bill. Haroon Akhtar Khan reaffirmed the government's commitment to a clean and prosperous Pakistan, stating, 'Our mission is a smog-free, pollution-free, and prosperous pakistan.' As part of the NEV Policy, he announced that electric vehicle charging stations will be set up nationwide to ensure convenience for the public and to encourage the transition towards clean and sustainable transportation.
