Port regain pair for Gabba test, Sicily back for Hawks

Perth Now18 hours ago
Jack Lukosius will play his first AFL game since round two as Port Adelaide are boosted for their big Gabba test.
Brownlow Medallist Ollie Wines will also return to the Power midfield for Saturday night's away match against second-placed Brisbane.
The Power are two games plus percentage outside the top eight and badly need a big scalp if they are to press for the finals.
Lukosius fractured his kneecap in round two and starred last week in the SANFL, while Wines has been out of action for the last two games with a knee injury.
Defender Darcy Gardiner and premiership player Callum Ah Chee are important inclusions for the Lions.
Hawthorn captain James Sicily will return from his hip injury on Saturday night against St Kilda, with midfielder James Worpel (quad) also back.
The Hawks were rocked this week with the news that in-form defender Josh Weddle is out for several weeks with a stress reaction in his back, while Sam Butler is also sidelined because of soreness.
Injury-plagued Essendon have recalled Jordan Ridley, Sam Durham and veteran ruckman Todd Goldstein for Saturday's match against Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium.
Among their outs is Darcy Parish (calf), one of the players hurt on the weekend at a training session as their run of soft-tissue injuries continues.
Ned Moyle will return for the Suns and go up against Goldstein in the ruck.
Geelong are unchanged for their Saturday home twilight match against Richmond, who regained Sam Lalor from a hamstring injury.
Richmond defender Josh Gibcus, a top-10 draft pick in 2021, will make his return to action in the VFL after a 15-month lay-off with a knee injury.
Meanwhile, slumping Carlton made a whopping six changes for Friday night's match against arch-rivals Collingwood.
The Blues dropped Jordan Boyd, Alex Cincotta, Billy Wilson and Lewis Young, while Adam Saad and Jack Silvagni are injured.
Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell is among four Collingwood inclusions, for his first AFL game in more than a year after recovering from a foot injury.
Veteran Magpies onballer Steele Sidebottom is out because of illness among four changes.

Coach's final word on Daniher comeback

Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan has laughed off any suggestion retired premiership winner Joe Daniher was thinking about an AFL return declaring he'll be very surprised' if he ever plays footy again. The rumour mill had linked Daniher, who pulled the pin after last year's premiership win after just 204 games, with a year to go on his contract and aged only 30, to Sydney and a lack of potent key forwards across the AFL fuelled the fire for a comeback. But Fagan, who has been in contact with Daniher as he travels the world, blissfully happy in retirement, was quick to put a line though his former charge on Friday. 'I'm nearly 100 per cent sure, 99.99 per cent sure,' Fagan said ahead of the Lions' clash with Port Adelaide on Saturday. 'Joe is enjoying life at the moment and the other thing I'd be confident with is if he did, he would play with us. 'I'd be very, very surprised if Joey ever plays footy again.' The Lions return to action after their bye with the run to September being guided by a new, secret theme the coach is driving as his team, second on the ladder, looks for back-to-back titles. 'We've got one, but I'm not going to tell you what it is,' he said of his latest catchphrase. 'I don't want the world to know ... I might let you know if it works, down the track.' But Fagan was clear that the message revolves around arresting a 4-3, win-loss record at the Gabba this season. The Lions didn't lose a game at home in 2023, and after losing the opening three home games last season, switched gears and finished with eight wins from 12 games on their way to premiership success. 'We've been a very good team on the road and we haven't been a very good team at the Gabba,' Fagan said. '(This week's been about) a bit of the why, but mostly what are we going to do about it. 'It's pretty important when teams come here teams feel really uncomfortable.' Fagan also knows how tight the competition is, and with a top-four finish crucial to get back to the grand final, doesn;t want to let the game against the 10th placed Power slip. 'You can have a loss and tumble three or four spots,' Fagan said. 'We shouldn't feel comfortable ... and we play a team this weekend that's still a live chance to play finals, sort of where we were at the same stage last year. 'They'll be coming in all fired up, thinking they're a chance because of the way we've played at the Gabba.' Darcy Fort will ruck on Saturday and fit-again Oscar McInerney will be rested after playing two VFL games, Fagan mindful of a five-day break before the Lions play Carlton in Melbourne next Thursday.

Saints sound the horns for new cult hero

St Kilda legends Trevor Barker and Nick Riewoldt regularly left fans' mouths gaping with their aerial feats. Supporters flocked to Moorabbin and Docklands to watch them play. But the athletic and courageous icons never had crowds donning viking helmets in their honour or blowing vuvuzela horns every time they flew for a grab. That privilege will instead go to the Saints' latest blonde bombshell - Alix Tauru - as his cult status grows. Of Swedish heritage, Tauru has already been dubbed the "Flying Viking" for his aerial presence and matched a St Kilda record with 14 spoils in the defeat to Fremantle last week. The 18-year-old defender has offered Saints supporters a glimmer of hope for a bright future as Ross Lyon's men attempt to breathe life back into their season against Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. A group of fans plan to sell viking helmets at the game and sound plastic horns in support of their new hero, while major sponsor RSEA Safety will deck out the cheer squad in viking-themed hard hats. "It's a low bar in AFL footy, isn't it? Fourteen spoils? It used to be 14 goals," Lyon quipped when asked about third-gamer Tauru's status as a fan favourite. "We're excited by Alix. The best thing is he's very level, he understands he's only as good as his next moment at training and in games. "At the end of the day, you come up against another fierce and formidable opponent, and he'll know he's alive. "The challenges keep coming, but it is exciting." St Kilda (5-10) have hit the skids after a positive start to the season, with a horror 2-9 record over the last three months ending their finals hopes early. They will start underdogs against Sam Mitchell's Hawthorn (10-5), who are looking to extend a three-match winning streak and continue their push for a top-two spot. "We're a club that needs to get better. We're off the pack, but we're fighting hard," Lyon said. "We've got a strategy over a period of time that we're pursuing, but in the near time we want to win lots of games of AFL footy. "(We played) three quarters against Collingwood, three quarters against Fremantle, albeit spirited and some good signs. "We're looking to chase four quarters down, so that would be the aim this week." Hawthorn have named key pair James Sicily and James Worpel to return from injuries, offsetting the loss of Josh Weddle and Sam Butler. Former Hawks wingman Brad Hill returns for the Saints alongside Angus Hastie, with Jack Carroll and Tobie Travaglia omitted. Ex-Richmond teammates Dan Butler and Mabior Chol will reach significant milestones on opposing sides. St Kilda forward Butler will play his 150th AFL match, while Hawks tall Chol will line up in his 100th, nine years after his debut.
