Davidsville man rides GAP trail to raise awareness for Easterseals

Yahoo25-05-2025
DAVIDSVILLE, Pa. – As Dan Honkus considered his approaching retirement from Somerset Trust Co., he decided he wanted to mark the occasion with a special trip in May.
After some consideration and research, the Davidsville resident chose to bicycle the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage that connects Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland.
'When I decided it was time to retire ... I wanted to do something that's outdoorsy and a challenge,' Honkus said.
He had heard about the GAP throughout the past 10 years, and read about the attractiveness of the trail to people around the world, which piqued his interest.
While preparing for the trip, Honkus added another level to the journey. He decided to combine his retirement adventure with another longtime passion of his, Easterseals.
He has served on the Easterseals Cambria-Somerset Division advisory council since the 1980s, and recently took a position on the Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania board.
Honkus started a fundraiser for the nonprofit titled 'Bridging the GAP for Easterseals' and set the goal at $2,500, which was quickly met.
He has kept donations open since completing the ride to raise as much money as he can for the organization, which helps children and adults with speech and hearing disabilities, autism and other developmental delays.
As of Monday, the total raised was $5,596. Contributions may be made through May 31 by visiting www.eastersealswcpa.org/pedalthegap2025.
'I'm pretty proud of where it stands now, and hopefully it will grow,' Honkus said.
His interest in Easterseals started with his late boss John Stewart, who served on the Cambria-Somerset Division council and encouraged Honkus to join.
Honkus said that he found the group's mission to be inspiring and he wanted to support it. That's why he dedicated so much time to the council, joined the board and created the fundraiser.
Honkus said the fundraiser also served as a motivator during the difficult portions of the GAP trail.
'For me, personally, riding for somebody who stepped up and supported my charity was a real incentive,' he said.
Annette Shearman, Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania division manager, said everyone is 'very grateful to Dan' for his charitable journey.
'He's an awesome guy,' she added. 'We're just really excited about it.'
Shearman said one of Easterseals' main challenges is raising awareness about what it does, which makes Honkus' advocacy so important.
According to the website, the nonprofit offers 'programs and services to ensure that people with disabilities or other special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities.'
Honkus said he was glad to help, and to have a longtime friend join in. When he considered who could accompany him on the journey, former college roommate Rick Ferris made perfect sense, he said.
Honkus and Ferris met at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and have remained friends for decades since.
Honkus asked Ferris to join him earlier this year, and within a few days, the college buddy was on board.
The two had a blast riding the 150 miles from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Honkus said. They started May 1 and wrapped up May 5, with a rest day at Ohiopyle in between.
The beauty of the Laurel Highlands and the solitude along the trail were remarkable, Honkus said.
'It exceeded my expectations,' he said. 'It was truly a great trip.'
Honkus gained an interest in bicycling within the past 10 years after his daughter, Jackie Honkus, purchased a trail bike. He said he found bicycling invigorating, and since he lives so close to the Quemahoning Family Recreation Area, it was a natural hobby to pick up.
The now-retired Somerset Trust Co. controller spends a lot of time at the reservoir, and described the scenic space as his 'happy place.'

I'm 5 Feet Tall, and I Built the Perfect Summer Capsule Wardrobe for Petite Travelers—Starting at $15

This summer, I've challenged myself to pack lighter and more efficiently, whether I'm heading on beach weekends away or my two-week mountain vacation. How does a chronic overpacker take on such a task? Well, I found that the best way was to build a travel capsule wardrobe that includes versatile, packable pieces that work for any occasion, and so far, my packing has been more seamless and stress-free than ever. Finding the pieces that make up the perfect summer capsule wardrobe is the hard part, and as someone five-feet-tall, I focused on petite-friendly pieces like ankle-grazing linen pants, maxi dresses, platform shoes, and other essentials that can be dressed up or down. Below, I've compiled what I believe makes up the ideal capsule wardrobe, all of which are available on Amazon. Shop my top picks from Crocs, Gap, Gloria Vanderbilt, and other petite brands at Amazon, starting at just $15. A flowy maxi dress is the perfect transitional piece from summer to fall, and this Anrabess option balances comfort with style. It has a fitted, tank top bodice and an airy skirt, and its high neckline provides added coverage. One 5-foot-tall reviewer wrote that it's a 'great length,' and added that they 'loved it so much,' they bought a second color. Speaking of color options, you can shop the summer dress in 14 color options, including a striking hot pink and a versatile gray-blue. My in-flight travel uniform consists of a two-piece matching set, but as a petite traveler, I need to ensure the legs won't drag on the airport floor. This comfy option from Sampeel includes a pair of cropped pants with a sleeveless mockneck top. It's made with an ultra-soft, lightweight, and drapey material that I can already imagine curling up in without overheating. One 5-foot-1 Amazon reviewer described the set as 'buttery' and wrote that the cropped pants fall 'right at the top of [their] feet.' A pair of linen pants belongs in every summer capsule wardrobe, and I recommend petite travelers add these Willit palazzo-style bottoms to their packing list. Available in a 27-inch inseam, the airy, moisture-wicking linen-blend pants have a four-way stretch and an adjustable drawstring waistband. If you're feet are also on the petite side, you'll want to check out the Crocs Brooklyn Low Wedge Sandals, available in women's sizes 3-11. They're currently Amazon's No. 1 best-seller and have garnered thousands of perfect ratings. In addition to the inclusive sizing, the Crocs have a platform sole that's easy to walk in and can add a little height to your look. One reviewer raved that the shoes are like 'walking on clouds,' while another person wrote they 'can walk in them for hours' without feeling any 'foot fatigue.' I spend half the summer in athletic shorts, even when I'm not on a run or working out! The comfy bottoms are one travel essential I never forget to pack, and I think this Crz Yoga pair would be a great addition to any capsule wardrobe. They feature a flattering smocked high waist with a petite 2.5-inch inseam, along with two hidden side zipper pockets. If there's just one dress you need for vacation, it's this petite sarong-style T-shirt dress from Gap. The T-shirt dress features a wrap design with an adjustable tie waist that allows for a customizable fit. In addition to the effortlessly chic black shade, you can shop the dress in budding lilac, blue, and a black and white striped pattern. A white t-shirt is the backbone of any summer capsule wardrobe, and over 1,000 Amazon shoppers purchased this one from Tankaneo within just the last month. The cropped style is ideal for those with a shorter torso, while the cuffed sleeves add a stylish touch to the basic. One 5-foot-2 reviewer shared that it's a 'great not-so-cropped top for petite women,' adding that it hits three inches below their navel. Every travel wardrobe should include a pair of comfortable jeans, no matter the time of year. These Amazon shopper-loved Gloria Vanderbilt jeans are available in a petite 29-inch inseam, which one reviewer wrote is 'perfect' for petites. The bottoms are a steep 56 percent off at Amazon, so I'm not missing my opportunity to add them to my travel capsule wardrobe while they're on sale. Getting your steps in on vacation is a given, so why not do it in style with these comfy sneakers from Reebok? The platform-style shoes are available in women's sizes ranging from 5 to 11, and come in eight colors. One traveler pointed out that they were 'very comfortable' as they 'walked miles and miles around London,' adding that they wore them 'every single day.' Right now, you can snag the trendy walking sneakers for a rare 29 percent off, bringing the price down to $64. I love a jumpsuit for traveling, but as someone 5-feet-tall, it can be challenging to find options that won't drag on the ground. Enter: the Lenetta V-Neck Jumpsuit. While it's not explicitly made for petite sizes, this ultra-soft, lightweight jumpsuit features adjustable straps and easy-to-fold legs that help to customize its length. Love a great deal? Béis and Gap Teamed Up for the Chicest Travel Collection

As a chronic over-packer with *checks notes* zero intention of ever changing, I can't survive a trip (destination and duration be damned!) without my trusty Béis bag collection—carry-on, packing cubes, and a checked bag included. Yeah, the whole ~overpacker~ label?? It isn't just for the bit, babes. So, when I caught wind that our girl Shay Mitchell (the Pretty Little Liar-turned-Béis founder and Chief Creative Officer) teamed up with Gap for the brand's foray into the apparel space, I was sat! In addition to the brand's bread and butter—aka luggage and travel bags that now come in a new colorway inspired by Gap's iconic denim—the collab includes alllll the styles for a perf airport 'fit. I'm talking the comfiest jumpsuit you can wear from the plane to your welcome dinner, barrel-leg jeans that feel like sweats, and convertible cargo pants that are genius for cold-to-warm weather trips. The sizes range from XS to XL and 00 through 16—but would loveeee to see inclusivity on the next drop, pls! "I've been wearing Gap since I was a kid, so designing a collection that allows you to express your personal style while on the go feels like a full circle moment," Shay said in a statement to Cosmo, adding that this line is for those who want to "look good, feel good, and travel in style." Now, let's talk about what else I'm adding to my cart. The Heavyweight Travel Hoodie is my new fave travel accessory. It has a built-in inflatable neck pillow directly in the hood that isn't too bulky but let's you nap like a queen (jet lag?? Don't know her). While the carry-on and duffel sold out already on Gap's site, you can still snag both styles directly from Béis—and even in a starter set. I'm also upgrading my old spinner to the Large Check-In Roller. The hard-sided design is so durable, while the easy, breezy 360-degree wheels roll effortlessly so your commute from baggage claim to the Uber is seamless. The bag's storage and organization options are endless too. There's a dedicated AirTag pocket, separate pouch for dirty laundry, small zip pouch for valuables, and tons of additional pockets. There's even a detachable compression flap that fits sooo much. Moral of the story? This collection will be gone faster than my airport lounge prosecco (I'm basically a record-holder). Get to shopping! Megan Schaltegger is an NYC-based writer. She loves strong coffee, eating her way through the Manhattan food scene, and her dog, Murray. She promises not to talk about herself in third person IRL.

Béis's New Collab With Gap Is What Denim Dreams Are Made Of

What do you get when one of the most beloved clothing brands of all time teams up with one of the most popular travel brands of the moment? Gap x Béis, a 26-piece capsule of travel-ready clothes, accessories, and denim-inspired luggage co-designed by actor and entrepreneur Shay Mitchell, the founder and chief creative officer of Béis. Trendy travelers have been ogling Béis's sleek suitcases, bags, and accessories since Mitchell first launched the brand in 2018 (we're big fans over here at Condé Nast Traveler!), but this collab marks the brand's first foray into apparel, with a limited-edition collection of tops, bottoms, jackets, hats, and even kids clothing, designed to be comfy and multi-functional for a day on the go. 'Travel has always been a big part of my life, and I've learned that what you wear and carry can completely shift your experience,' Mitchell told Traveler exclusively. 'This collection was built with that in mind. We wanted to create pieces that move with you—whether you're sprinting through an airport, exploring a new city, or just trying to get some sleep on a long flight.' Take a peek at the lineup and you'll find an oversized hoodie with a built-in neck pillow, a convertible jumpsuit that folds down into pants, and even cargo pants that zip off into shorts. If you're already a fan of Béis, you may also notice that the clothing items come in the brand's signature colorways: beige, black, and berry pink, perfect for mixing and matching. Gap x Béis Convertible bandeau jumpsuit $88 Gap Gap x Béis Baggy jeans $118 Gap 'Partnering with Gap on this collection and campaign felt deeply nostalgic and meaningful—I grew up with the brand,' says Mitchell. The five Gap x Béis luggage pieces—a backpack, weekender, small carry-on, regular carry-on, and checked suitcase—are also inspired by Gap's classic jeans, each sporting a gorgeous light blue hue. This is the first time Béis has come out with a blue colorway, so expect the shade to sell out quick.
