‘Bono: Stories Of Surrender' Draws 6½-Minute Ovation At Cannes Premiere

Yahoo16-05-2025
U2 frontman and rock legend Bono just rocked the Palais with documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender, receiving a 6½-minute ovation. At the five-minute mark, he jokingly started to unbutton his shirt to keep the applause going.
After starting his speech with a little French for the hometown crowd, Bono said: 'I'm not a French man. I'm an Irish man. And I'm not a self-made man.' Pointing to his wife Ali and then his 45-year U2 bandmates, he added: 'You wrote this story. The Edge wrote this story. Adam [Clayton] and Larry [Mullen Jr.] wrote this story. [Longtime band manager] Paul McGuinness wrote this story. We're still writing it, Paul. Still a work in progress.'

He also acknowledged several others as co-writers, in the name of love.
A rep for director Andrew Dominik, however, said the filmmaker 'is unfortunately working right now and could not make it to Cannes.'

Playing in the Special Screenings section of the Cannes Film Festival, the Andrew Dominik-directed doc is culled from Bono's 2023 one-man show at New York's Beacon Theatre, weaving performances of his best-known songs into a tale of a boy suffering the shocking loss of his mother and trying in vain to get the needed acknowledgment from a grieving father.

Of the doc, the Dublin native and lifetime human rights activist recently told Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr., 'I had to dig quite deep and just go for a family story. All families are little operas, some bigger than others. There's always the soap opera, and there's suds here. There are tenors; there's the figure of my father, which kind of dominates. And the band. People wouldn't be turning up to hear my story if it wasn't for them. Overall, as excruciating as it's been — and I'm glad it's over — this is a great close to it.' Aya Takano's Ethereal Dreamscapes Head to Perrotin Los Angeles

Summary Later this month,Perrotin Los Angeleswill open its doors tohow deep how far we can go, a new exhibition by renowned Japanese artist AYATAKANO. A name synonymous with the dreamy, manga-inspired spirit of the Superflat movement, TAKANO is one of the few names on the roster ofKaikai Kiki Co., playing a pivotal role in the meteoric rise of theMurakami-founded art movement. The upcoming showcase beautifully builds on the artist's previous explorations of biological interconnectedness, ancestral consciousness and the cross-species connection. In this latest body of work, composed of new paintings installations and drawings, her blushing androgynous forms sit beside animals, ancient DNA strands and fungi — gentle-eyed, glowing and alive with shared breath. 'What I try to depict in my work is an invitation to a more organic, interconnected and harmonious world,' she explained. 'A place not centered around humans alone, but one that honors the radiance of all life.' With humans are no longer at the center, TAKANO revels in a dream of mutual becoming — with every organism rich in its capacity for 'spiritual depth and radical tenderness.' Wrapped in celestial fields of color, symbolic figures and otherworldly encounters, how deep how far we can gostands as a luminous reminder of what we are, and everything we're still becoming. As French novelist Michaël Ferrier describes, in this space, 'suddenly, animals are not wild beasts, but companions in a shared metamorphosis. Wolves, lions and leopards are painted in profile like figures from a prehistoric fresco – not fierce or menacing, but soft, sentient and noble. TAKANO's brush lingers not on claws or fangs, but on fur and gaze.' The exhibition will open in Los Angeles on July 19 and will remain open through August 30. The Surprising Story Behind Kerry Condon's 'F1' Role

Damson Idris and Brad Pitt may be getting all the love for their new summer blockbuster F1, but the real MVP is Kerry Condon. The Banshees of Inisherin star plays Kate McKenna, a technical director for the fictional Formula 1 team in the film, APXGP. Though Condon's role was not based on a real-life person, she was inspired by a few other trailblazers in the sport. The first was Bernie Collins, an F1 analyst for Sky Sports and the former Head of Race Strategy for the Aston Martin F1 team. 'I learned a lot from Bernie because of her Irish background,' Condon told F1 Nation. 'I thought that was going to be perfect. I thought, 'Yes, bingo, I'm going to base it kind of on Bernie's backstory.'' Collins was born in Ireland, just like Condon, and her love for Formula 1 began in school. While enrolled at Queen's University Belfast, she studied mechanical engineering and joined the Formula Student program, an international engineering design competition where students design and build racing cars. Throughout her career, Collins has held various strategy and performance engineering roles at McLaren, United Autosports, Force India, and Aston Martin. 'Bernie had a similar education to me,' Condon told TODAY. 'She went to an all-girls school and stuff, so I kind of brought in a lot of my own background and made it my own.' While on set, Condon also asked Collins for advice on certain scenes. 'And then little things like the notepad that I have when I walk to the pit wall, I asked Bernie what she would have written on the front page of her notepad,' she told F1 Nation. 'Just in case the camera caught a glimpse of my notepad or something.' Condon also took cues from Ruth Buscombe, a British motorsport engineer and F1 TV presenter. '[She] was very helpful,' she said. 'I just kind of found out a little bit about where they went to college and what they studied and the route that they took to get there.' Buscombe also became interested in F1 at an early age. She attended the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering and studied aerospace and aerothermal engineering. After graduating, she joined the Ferrari team as a development engineer and then later became their race strategist. She's also held engineering and strategy positions at Haas and Sauber.
