Ozzy Osbourne dies aged 76

, Black Sabbath singer and godfather of heavy metal, has died at 76 just weeks after performing at a farewell show. A statement from his family said: 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.' Osbourne had a connection to the UAE, with Black Sabbath playing their first Middle East concert in Abu Dhabi in 2014. "That is what it is all about for me, to go out and explore new places," he told The National that year. "We have matured and we have families and responsibilities and I am just having a great time playing with the boys all over again." He had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019. As frontman of Black Sabbath, he was at the forefront of the heavy metal scene – a deeper, darker offshoot of hard rock. His theatrical stage presence, including once biting off the head of a bat, and styling himself as the Prince of Darkness marked him out as a controversial figure. Earlier this month he bid a farewell to fans with a Black Sabbath reunion, telling thousands of heavy metal enthusiasts at Villa Park, Birmingham – a stone's throw from where Black Sabbath was formed in 1968 – that it was 'so good to be on this stage' as he performed his last set from a large black throne.

Emirates goes on a hiring spree for cabin crew, pilots and ground services staff

The parent of Emirates airline is looking to expand its workforce by 17,300 including hiring more cabin crew, pilots and engineers as well as cargo, catering and ground handling staff, it said on Tuesday. Emirates Group, owned by Dubai's sovereign wealth fund ICD, plans to add staff in 350 different roles across the group in the financial year that ends next March, expanding its overall workforce by 14%. The new jobs will include over 4,000 at its ground-handling firm dnata, it said. Emirates plays a key role in positioning Dubai as a global centre. Under a 10-year plan known as D33, the city state is seeking to grow its economy by investing in tourism and attracting foreign capital, including into real estate. Home to the world's tallest tower, the city-state welcomed 8.68 million overnight visitors between January and May this year, a rise of 7% from a year earlier, according to government data. As part of the recruiting drive, Emirates will be hosting over 2,100 open days and other talent acquisition events in 150 cities throughout the year, it said in the statement.
