Palm falls on weak rival edible oils, rising output, sluggish demand

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures slipped on Thursday, snapping two straight sessions of gains, weighed by rival edible oils while concerns over rising production and sluggish export demand added further pressure on prices. The benchmark palm oil contract for October delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid RM28 ringgit, or 0.65 per cent, to RM4,250 (US$1,000) a metric ton at the midday break. Crude palm oil futures traded lower tracking weakness in the Chicago soybean oil and Dalian palm olein market during Asian hours, said David Ng, a proprietary trader at Kuala Lumpur-based trading firm Iceberg X Sdn Bhd. "The persistent concern over rising output and weak export also added pressure on the market," he said. Cargo surveyors will release their July export estimates later in the day. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.61 per cent, while its palm oil contract lost 0.51 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade were down 0.82 per cent. Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. At 0545 GMT, the benchmark Brent crude was down 0.33 per cent at US$73 per barrel. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.35 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies. Malaysian palm oil exports to the United States during January-May rose 51.8 per cent from a year earlier to 93,000 metric tons, the Plantation and Commodities Ministry said.

13MP: Malaysia to implement free market system by 2040

Anwar adds that Malaysiaís industries are recognised for producing advanced technologies developed through locally led research, development, commercialisation, and innovation. — Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (July 31): Malaysia will continue to progress as a developed nation based on its definition and values, embracing a free market system, becoming a top global investment destination, and leading the regional market by 2040. According to the 13th Malaysia Plan Report (2026-2030), themed 'Redesigning Development', this success stems from a shift towards a more diverse economy that enables high-value product output across global value chains. 'This transition also offers fair opportunities for skilled local talent to boost productivity with progressive wages,' the Economy Ministry said in the report. It added that Malaysiaís industries are recognised for producing advanced technologies developed through locally led research, development, commercialisation, and innovation. The government plays a responsive and facilitative role in strengthening the economic ecosystem, enabling all economic agents to operate efficiently. It also sets clear, consistent, and strategic policies and directions to guide stakeholders in making aligned decisions towards national development goals. 'The government is also responsible for ensuring comprehensive, integrated, and high-quality infrastructure and public facilities to support business, society, and public needs,' the five-year strategy document said. Government support, such as financing, incentives and targeted programmes will continue to be improved to ensure inclusivity and address economic disparities. Meanwhile, Malaysian companies are enhancing their capacity and competitiveness globally and are venturing into new high-potential industries. 'They actively collaborate with research institutions and investors to produce disruptive products and services that generate high value,' the report adds. Employers offer fair, progressive wages, foster worker-friendly environments, and invest early in identifying and developing talent and skills to improve workforce productivity. Individuals and communities also play a vital role in creating an inclusive economy by participating actively in economic activities and supporting local businesses. Individuals are seen as future-ready human capital who strive to contribute their skills and energy across sectors. They are strategic thinkers who seek and create opportunities through entrepreneurship to generate value, income, and wealth. 'ìCommunities act as change agents, sharing responsibility in cultivating a culture of innovation and supporting local economic activity,' the report concludes. –Bernama 13MP Anwar Ibrahim economy free market system

13MP: Needs-based Solutions To Achieve Social Justice, Equal Opportunities

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- The government is determined to shift from race-based solutions to needs-based approaches to achieve social justice and equitable opportunities, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat today, he announced a range of initiatives covering the economic, educational and infrastructure sectors to ensure that all communities enjoy the fruits of the nation's development. To enhance the protection of rights and status of the Orang Asli community, he said the Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 (Act 134) will be reviewed, particularly in areas concerning land ownership, education and infrastructure, to improve their socio-economic wellbeing. 'A policy review will be conducted to ensure that the Orang Asli community receives fair and equitable benefits,' he said. The prime minister said that educational access for the Orang Asli community will remain a government priority, including the direct provision of school aid to parents and the expansion of community-based schools. As for the Bumiputera community, Anwar said the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (PuTERA35) will focus on the '3P' strategy — broad-based participation, meaningful ownership and strategic sector dominance. He said the government will continue to assist Bumiputera companies in preparing for listing on Bursa Malaysia, including through a 'relay race' model aimed at empowering and nurturing entrepreneurs from the startup stage to public listing. 'Government-linked companies (GLCs) will facilitate institutional support for Bumiputera entrepreneurs, to produce 10 Bumiputera champions in the supply chain, each targeted to grow into companies worth over RM500 million,' he said. The Finance Minister added that socio-economic development for Anak Negeri (natives) in Sabah and Bumiputera in Sarawak will also be strengthened. This includes expanding business opportunities through the provision of commercial premises, access to financing and entrepreneurship training and mentoring programmes.
