Jinoreeka's rise in squash fuelled by parents' dedication and big spending

KUALA LUMPUR: Parents play a pivotal role in shaping their children's futures — just ask former state hockey player R. Manivannan and his wife Toh Chee Kuan.
The Ipoh-based couple have poured in time, energy and over RM250,000 to support their only child, rising squash star Jinoreeka Ning (https://www.nst.com.my/sports/others/2025/07/1240447/coachless-jinoreeka...).
The duo run a humble restaurant in Ipoh Garden specialising in curry mee and Hainanese chicken rice, but their greatest pride is Jinoreeka, who is fast making a name for herself on the junior squash circuit, both locally and internationally.
The 15-year-old bagged her second continental title on Saturday, clinching the Girls' Under-15 crown at the Asian Junior Squash Championships in Gimcheon, South Korea.
It was her second Asian Junior title after winning the Under-13 crown in China two years ago.
Remarkably, Jinoreeka, a Form Three student of Methodist Girls' School in Ipoh, who picked up squash at the age of eight, has amassed 20 junior titles without a full-time coach.
"I love squash because it's fast-paced and challenging," said Jinoreeka, who dreams of becoming a world-class player within five years.
With no coach based in Ipoh, Jinoreeka travels to Cairo for training stints under renowned Egyptian coach Omar Aziz — best known for working with world No. 3 Hania El Hammamy.
"I saw Omar on television coaching Hania and told my dad that I wanted him as my coach," said Jinoreeka.
"We got in touch and he agreed. When I'm back in Ipoh, I stick to the training programme he provides."
Her parents were in the stands to witness her latest triumph in Korea, spending RM10,000 just to be there.
Despite their business commitments, Manivannan and his wife prioritise their daughter's budding career.
"I've travelled with Jinoreeka to Cairo eight times in the last two years, spending over RM250,000," said Manivannan, 54, who played for Perak and Maybank in hockey.
"I even cook our meals when we travel. We want her to be as good as the Egyptians. That's why we're making all these sacrifices."
When back in Malaysia, Manivannan drives his daughter to Kuala Lumpur on weekends for sparring sessions at Lake View Club and Jalan Duta Courts.
"We're doing everything we can to help her succeed," he added.
"Our dream is for Jinoreeka to compete at the British Junior Open next year."
Manivannan was part of the Perak side that won the Razak Cup in 1992, and now, more than 30 years later, he's working hard to help his daughter script her own sporting legacy.

No travel woes as Brunei cover cost for visiting Super League teams

PETALING JAYA: No need to tighten your travel budgets – Brunei are footing the bill. Super League teams making their trip to the Sultanate for matches for the new season in August can breathe easy, as the foreign football club have agreed to sponsor all travel expenses for visiting teams. Malaysian Football League (MFL) acting chief executive officer Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd said the arrangement was a major factor in Brunei's participation in the 2025-2026 season. 'The sponsorship was one of the main matters in our agreement with Brunei,' said Shazli after the official ball launch ceremony for the new season. 'Brunei requested to handle this aspect and they will do it.' The agreement with MFL is the same as Brunei did for clubs when they competed in Singapore's S-League last season. Shazli added that even though Brunei would be competing in the league, they would not be eligible to compete in any Asian or Asean level tournaments, such as the Asian Championships League Elite, Asian Championships League 2 and AFF Club Championship. 'If Brunei are in a position to qualify for a slot, they will not be representing the position as our national representatives,' said Shazli. Meanwhile, Shazli also said that 12 out of the 13 teams have locked in their home venues, with the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan being an alternative venue for any last-minute changes. Only Immigration team have until today to confirm their home field.

Motor racing-Hulkenberg rids himself of unwanted record at the 239th attempt

Formula One F1 - British Grand Prix - Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, Britain - July 6, 2025 Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg celebrates with a trophy on the podium after finishing third place in the British Grand Prix REUTERS/Andrew Boyers SILVERSTONE, England (Reuters) -Nico Hulkenberg provided Formula One's feel-good story of the day, and possibly the season, at the British Grand Prix and nobody was more surprised and delighted than the 37-year-old German. After 15 years, and at the 239th attempt, the Sauber driver finally shrugged off the unwanted record of the most race starts without ever standing on the podium -- and replaced it with the most starts until a first podium. "I don't think I can comprehend what we've just done," he said over the team radio after taking third place. Hulkenberg did it in fairytale fashion, following a script that even the producers of the recently-released Brad Pitt blockbuster F1 movie would probably have rejected as too implausible. He started last on the grid, in 19th place with Alpine's Franco Colapinto lining up in the pitlane, for Swiss-based Sauber. Thanks to clever strategy and pitting at absolutely the right time, Hulkenberg took Sauber to their first podium in 13 years and also became the team's all-time lowest-starting top-three finisher. "It feels good. It's been a long time coming, hasn't it?," said Hulkenberg, rather stating the obvious, after tumultuous pitlane celebrations. "I always knew we have it in us, I had it in me somewhere... it's pretty surreal, to be honest. Not sure how it all happened, but obviously crazy conditions, mixed conditions. It was a survival fight for a lot of the race. "I think we just were really on it. The right calls, the right tyres, at the right moment. Made no mistakes and, yeah, quite incredible." With nine-times British GP winner Lewis Hamilton in fourth place for Ferrari, it had seemed inevitable that Hulkenberg would be reeled in and his day would end yet again as a story of what might have been. Instead it became a tale of triumph against the odds for a future works Audi team on the up and now riding high in sixth place overall. "I think I was in denial until probably the last pit stop, you know, and then when I heard we gapped Lewis quite a bit with the one extra lap, I was like, 'Okay, this is good, this is some breathing space'," said Hulkenberg. "It was an intense race but like I said, we didn't crack. No mistakes. And obviously really, really happy with that." Team boss Jonathan Wheatley, an F1 veteran who joined from Red Bull this season, piled on the superlatives. "I think he was almost in a state of shock when I saw him under the podium," he said. "Nico drove an outstanding race today. One of the best I've seen at Silverstone and one of the best I've seen of any driver ever. "I've considered him to be an extraordinary talent for a very long time... I think he showed today what he's capable of. The monkey's off his back."
