Healthy eating in middle age has this key longevity benefit

Adopting healthy eating habits during middle age boosts the likelihood of healthy aging.
That's according to a new study from the Harvard T.C. Chan School of Public Health, which found that a "moderate intake of healthy, animal-based foods" and a "lower intake of ultraprocessed foods" could increase the chances of reaching age 70 with good "cognitive, physical and mental health" and no major diseases.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and the University of Montreal also contributed to the study, which was published in the journal Nature Medicine.
"Studies have previously investigated dietary patterns in the context of specific diseases or how long people live. Ours takes a multifaceted view, asking, how does diet impact people's ability to live independently and enjoy a good quality of life as they age?" said co-corresponding author Frank Hu, Fredrick J. Stare Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology and chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard Chan School, in a Harvard press release.
The researchers analyzed diet and health data for more than 105,000 women and men aged 39 to 69 over a 30-year period, drawn from the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.
Based on the participants' self-reported diets, they were given scores for eight different healthy eating plans based on their intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fats, nuts and legumes, as well as some healthy animal-based foods, including fish and certain dairy products, the release stated.
They also investigated the participants' consumption of ultraprocessed foods containing added sugars, sodium and unhealthy fats.
The diet with the most benefits for healthy aging was the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), the researchers found, which was linked to an 86% greater likelihood of healthy aging at 70 years old.
This diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes and healthy fats, with limited amounts of red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, sodium and refined grains, the release stated.
Participants who ate more processed foods had less likelihood of healthy aging, with processed meat and sugary or diet beverages named as the biggest culprits.
"There is no one-size-fits-all diet. Healthy diets can be adapted to fit individual needs and preferences."
"Our findings suggest that dietary patterns rich in plant-based foods, with moderate inclusion of healthy, animal-based foods, may promote overall healthy aging and help shape future dietary guidelines," said co-corresponding author Marta Guasch-Ferré, associate professor in the Department of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen and adjunct associate professor of nutrition at Harvard Chan School, in the release.
"Our findings also show that there is no one-size-fits-all diet. Healthy diets can be adapted to fit individual needs and preferences," added lead author Anne-Julie Tessier, assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at the University of Montreal and researcher at the Montreal Heart Institute.
Sherry Coleman Collins, a food allergy dietitian and expert from the Atlanta metropolitan area, was not involved in the study but reviewed the findings.
"This data helps emphasize the importance of how we eat throughout life, in particular at midlife, on our ability to remain healthy and strong into our golden years," she told Fox News Digital.
"Since the majority of healthcare dollars are spent at the end of our life, this has huge implications on the potential to save money on costly interventions, as well as improving quality of life throughout the lifespan."
Most of the beneficial diets in the study were primarily plant-based, Collins noted.
"They aren't all vegetarian or vegan, but they all include an eating pattern made up of primarily fruits, vegetables, whole grains, foods high in unsaturated fats, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds."
She agreed, however, that there is no one-size-fits-all diet, and that people can be healthy by eating many different types of diets.
"The most health-promoting diets all exclude or only include small amounts of high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt, ultraprocessed foods," she said.
The study did have some limitations, the researchers acknowledged — chiefly that it was limited to only health professionals.
Further studies are needed to confirm the findings with more diverse populations, they said.

Blockbuster diabetes and weight loss drugs from Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk - including Mounjaro, Zepbound, Ozempic and Wegovy - generated over U$40 billion in combined sales last year. However, Novo Nordisk has warned that the rise in copycat versions of its weight-loss drug in the U.S. and competition from Lilly across several markets is expected to hurt Wegovy sales this year. Both companies are actively exploring other medical uses for these GLP-1 drugs, aiming to broaden their market reach and secure wider health insurance coverage, a strategy that has already seen some success. Here are some of the other conditions the drugs are being used and tested for: Alcohol addiction A study conducted by the University of Copenhagen's Psychiatric Centre Rigshospitalet, is investigating whether semaglutide - the main ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic - can help reduce alcohol intake in 108 patients diagnosed with alcohol use disorder and obesity. Alzheimer's disease Novo Nordisk is testing semaglutide in a late-stage trial in patients with early Alzheimer's disease. The study, which will enrol 1,840 patients, could have an initial data readout as early as later this year. Cardiovascular disease Eli Lilly was testing tirzepatide - the main ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound - for patients with heart failure and obesity. Lilly had said it would enrol about 700 people in the study, but the company said in May that it had withdrawn its U.S. application for heart failure approval. The European Medicines Agency backed the use of Novo's semaglutide to help ease heart failure symptoms in people with obesity in September 2024. Chronic kidney disease Novo's Ozempic is approved in the United States for reducing the risk of kidney failure and disease progression, as well as the risk of death due to heart problems in diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease. Lilly's tirzepatide is being evaluated in a mid-stage study of patients with chronic kidney disease and obesity. Lilly plans to enrol up to 140 participants with the study expected to be completed next year. Liver disease Novo is testing semaglutide in a late-stage trial of patients with a common, but difficult to treat, type of fatty liver disease called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. The study is expected to be completed in April 2029 and include about 1,200 patients. Lilly's tirzepatide helped up to 74 per cent of patients achieve absence of the disease with no worsening of liver scarring at 52 weeks, compared with 13 per cent of patients on placebo, in a mid-stage trial for NASH, which is also now referred to as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH. Neurological disorders Researchers at the Danish Headache Centre are testing semaglutide along with a very low-calorie diet as a treatment for new-onset idiopathic intracranial hypertension, a condition associated with obesity in which blood pressure inside the head rises. The study has enrolled about 50 patients and is expected to be completed in October 2025. Sleep apnea Zepbound was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for obstructive sleep apnea in December 2024, making it the first drug to directly treat patients with the common disorder that causes breathing disruption while sleeping.

Researchers suggest the eating habits, all of which place a focus on consuming more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, 'can be promoted across all populations'. The analysis included 826,000 people, with researchers from the University of Cambridge looking at 33 studies on three different diets. These were: The Mediterranean diet, which is high in olive oil, vegetables, fruit, nuts and fish The Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), which emphasises the importance of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, healthy proteins and oils to avoid chronic disease The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (Dash), designed to help lower blood pressure and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein, while limiting saturated fat, cholesterol and salt. The study found that the top 10 per cent of people who adhered to the diets had a significantly lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than the bottom 10 per cent. Type 2 diabetes happens when the hormone insulin does not work properly, causing high blood sugar. Treatment can include lifestyle changes such as healthier eating and exercise to help lower these levels and avoid medication. The review suggests the Dash diet reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 23 per cent, while the Mediterranean diet was linked to a 17 per cent lower risk and AHEI was linked to a 21 per cent lower risk. The benefits of following each diet also did not appear to vary across African, Asian, European and Hispanic ethnic groups, according to researchers. Researchers said the findings 'suggest that major ethnic groups benefit equally from higher adherence to these dietary patterns', although more research is needed for specific populations. They added: 'This study strengthens the evidence that the Mediterranean, AHEI, and Dash dietary patterns may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes across diverse ethnic groups, and that they can be promoted across all populations.' The findings will be presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Vienna in September.
