Nine killed in horrific Mother's Day crash in Empangeni
The crash occurred early on Sunday morning in Empangeni.
KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma described the incident as 'horrific'.
'On this Mother's Day, around 06:47, I received a report from our highly dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) informing me about a horrific accident that claimed the lives of nine people, mostly mothers.
'According to a preliminary report, this accident, which happened along the N2 northbound after Mthunzini Toll Plaza, involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1, which was transporting 24 members of the Zion Christian Church,' Duma said.
The members were travelling to Dukuduku in Umtubatuba.
'We have been informed by the RTI and emergency rescue services that a tow truck struck the rear end of the Hyundai H-1, resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. Those who were injured have been taken to hospitals and we wish them a speedy recovery.
'Equally, we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the church,' Duma said.
A team has also been assembled to 'liaise with the church and families during this difficult period'.
'I have also mandated the RTI to immediately keep in touch with the Road Traffic Management Corporation to ensure that an investigation is conducted around this horrific accident.

A third motorist was caught driving at 178km/h, and a pursuit led to his arrest. He remains in holding cells, awaiting bail. 'These arrests send a clear message: No one is above the law,' said Duma. 'It is particularly disappointing when professionals — people who should know better — put lives at risk.' Tragic multi-vehicle crash on N2 near Gingindlovu leaves one dead and four injured
One of the vehicles that was involved in a multi-vehicle crash on the N2 on Saturday. A tragic multi-vehicle accident on the N2 near Gingindlovu in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday evening left one person dead and four others, including two children, injured. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma confirmed the incident, describing it as a 'horrific accident' involving a Toyota Fortuner, a minibus taxi, and a third, unidentified vehicle which burst into flames. 'We have been contacted by our highly dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate and Road Angels South Africa and tow truck drivers informing us about a horrific accident along the N2, just after Gingindlovu towards Mthunzini,' said Duma. The crash occurred near the Fairbreeze Mine, and emergency personnel from IPSS Medical Rescue were among the first on the scene. 'At least four people, including two children, have sustained injuries ranging from critical to minor after two vehicles collided,' IPSS said in a statement. The injured occupants travelling in a white Toyota Fortuner, a family of four including two children were taken to hospital for treatment, confirmed Duma. According to the department, seven passengers from the minibus taxi were not injured and continued their journey to Durban. The unknown third vehicle was engulfed in flames on impact. Following a forensic investigation, Duma confirmed that the occupant in this vehicle had died. MEC Duma expressed concern over burn-related injuries often sustained in such crashes. 'Victims of road accidents involving cars that burst into flames are likely to suffer severe burn wounds and smoke-inhalation injuries,' he said. MEC for Transport & Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has expressed his condolences to the families of the five people who died in an horrific accident in Bergville today (August 3). The accident happened along the P288 in the Bergville area. Duma said he has sent a team to ensure that they locate the families of the victims.
