Atturra rebrands Plan B to expand IT services in New Zealand

Atturra has confirmed that Auckland-based Plan B Limited will rebrand as Atturra, following its recent acquisition by the advisory and technology services business.
The rebranding will take effect from 31 July 2025, marking the integration of Plan B's nationwide network of five data centres and its portfolio of over 1,000 clients into Atturra's operations.
Atturra's expansion in New Zealand brings five business divisions to the market: Managed Services, Cloud Services, Business Applications, Data and Integration, and Advisory and Consulting. The move aligns with Atturra's commitment to delivering a broad IT solutions portfolio across Australia and New Zealand, further strengthened by the recent acquisition of ComActivity, which provides Infor M3 ERP services.
Expanded services
As part of its local service expansion, Atturra is introducing several new offerings for New Zealand clients. These include enhanced end user support focused on "modern workplace/helpdesk" services, aiming to improve staff productivity through desktop and workplace technology solutions.
The enhanced security suite will offer cybersecurity services designed to safeguard organisations' data and infrastructure, leveraging Atturra's skills in managed security, threat prevention, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Public cloud services, including expertise with major cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure and AWS, will also be available. These services cover the architecture, deployment, and management of cloud solutions, supported by Atturra's managed cloud services team. Additionally, a procurement service will enable streamlined access to hardware and software through Atturra's supplier network, offering end-to-end provisioning for IT equipment and software licensing.
Leadership appointments
Atturra has announced several senior leadership appointments alongside the rebrand. Frazer Scott has been named Country Manager for New Zealand and will also support Atturra's ANZ network strategy. His remit includes aligning the company's go-to-market efforts in New Zealand and leading the managed services division locally.
The company's regional leadership team, predominantly based in Auckland, has also been drawn from existing Plan B talent. The team includes Diego Nievas as Chief Technology Officer, leading technical strategy and innovation for managed services across Australia and New Zealand; Sachin Jain as Director, Customer Experience, overseeing delivery and client success; and Rudi Hefer as Director, Commercial and Connect, responsible for the ANZ networking, connectivity business, and commercial and channel activities. "Our enhanced service portfolio will allow Atturra to deliver more comprehensive, integrated solutions - from infrastructure to cloud and user support - tailored to New Zealand organisations.
Frazer Scott commented further on the transition, stating, "While existing clients will see no immediate changes to the services they receive and will continue working with the same local team, work is underway to combine Plan B's infrastructure and local expertise with Atturra's broader solutions and resources. Shared planning, cross-training, and alignment workshops will help teams operate as one. Clients can expect improved innovation and delivery as a result."
The leadership restructuring aims to reinforce Atturra's commitment to managed services, local leadership, and collaboration across regions. The company intends for existing Plan B clients to benefit from a seamless transition with continued support from the local team, while accessing a broader suite of services under Atturra's brand.
Atturra's clients span a wide range of industries including government, utilities, education, defence, financial services, and manufacturing. Its partnerships with global technology providers such as Boomi, Cisco, HP, HPE, Infor, Microsoft, Nuix, OpenText, QAD, Smartsheet, Snowflake, and Software AG underpin the company's service offerings.
The rebrand and leadership appointments underscore Atturra's strategy to deliver expanded IT services to organisations in New Zealand while integrating Plan B's local experience and resources into its broader operational framework.

Stats NZ numbers showed the unemployment rate rising to 5.2 percent in the three months ended June, from 5.1 percent in the previous quarter. That was a little less than was expected but economists said it still showed that there was significant "excess capacity" in the economy which should keep inflation in check. ANZ economists said there was even the possibility that businesses could shed "hoarded labour" over the rest of this year. They said there was evidence that some had been holding on to staff in anticipation of an economic recovery and that had kept unemployment about 0.5 percent lower than it would otherwise have been. If the recovery didn't happen as expected, some of those jobs could be cut. ANZ said the Reserve Bank was likely to put more weight on factors that indicated inflation was less likely to get too strong for its target band. "Today's data certainly don't present any roadblocks to an OCR cut in August." ASB economists agreed the data should encourage more interest rate cuts. "We expect a 25bp [basis points] OCR cut in August…Persistent labour market softness could see the OCR end the year below 3 percent as the RBNZ presses harder on the policy accelerator to try to revive the economy." Photo: RNZ BNZ chief economist Mike Jones said he still expected another 25bp cut this month and probably another one after that. "The lift in the unemployment rate to 5.2 percent was a little less than the 5.3 percent the consensus had expected. But the key reason we didn't see a larger increase was the fall in the labour force participation rate to 70.5 percent. And more people deciding to exit the labour force is hardly a positive signal. "The labour market is weak and, balancing all the overs and unders in today's numbers, we think it's a bit weaker than the Reserve Bank's most recent set of forecasts. This, coupled with the clear wobbles we're seeing in broader economic indicators, points to a recovery that needs a little more help from interest rates." "The unemployment rate looks a little better than expected, but only because people, especially younger people, are leaving the workforce, unable to find work. "The underutilisation rate is up, as hours worked are down. The fall in employment over the quarter points to a potential contraction in activity (GDP) over the quarter. That's not good enough for an economy that should be bouncing out of the recession. The soft underbelly of the report shows the economy is struggling to recover. The RBNZ will be forced to do more than they think." Cotality chief property economist Kelvin Davidson said mortgage rates were probably at or near the bottom across many of the fixed-rate terms. But Kerr said there could be room to move a bit. "I think they could fall a little further, as we are getting more rate cuts offshore." Jones agreed. "I think we're probably entering the home stretch as far as the downtrend goes. But the fact the market is now more readily pricing in the downside to the OCR, along with the moves lower we're seeing in offshore interest rates, to me suggests we could still see some further modest falls from here. I still think those declines will be more concentrated in the shorter terms though."

Photo: New Zealand's grocery prices stabilised last year, but remained higher than in many many other developed nations, according to the Commerce Commission. The Annual Grocery Report for 2024 also highlighted "geographic inequities", where areas like Auckland enjoyed more competition, compared to less populated regions. "In 2024, retail grocery prices appeared to have stabilised after years of significant growth, which was reflected in a slowing of the major supermarket's gross margin growth, however, grocery prices remain higher than the OECD average," grocery commissioner Pierre van Heerden said. However, he noted recent 2025 data showed retail prices rising, highlighting the need for more work to improve competition. The Commission said the most recent data from 2023 showed New Zealand prices were three percent higher than the OECD average, although the gap has narrowed. It was nine percent higher in 2022, and 14 percent higher than the OECD average in 2021. The commission said major supermarkets maintained their national market share of 82 percent, but there had been some movement within the group. "Pak'nSave has increased its market share while Woolworths has had a continued decline in market share over the past five years," van Heerden said. However, he highlighted geographical differences in supermarkets' dominance. "Consumers in Auckland and other main cities have a range of options, but consumers in smaller towns and rural areas typically have minimal to no choice within their locality, with some stores in small towns functioning as a localised monopoly," van Heerden said. The report said in Auckland major supermarkets held 71 percent of the market, compared to 88 percent in the rest of the country. It also found 90 percent of New Zealanders were within a 10-minute drive from a major supermarket. The top of the South Island, West Coast, Otago, Waikato and Taranaki were where the major chains held the most dominance. Stronger rules planned for use of biometric data

File pic Photo: 123RF New rules have been introduced to govern how agencies can use people's biometric data, like facial recognition , fingerprints and iris scanning. The biometric privacy processing code will come into force in November, although agencies already using biometric technology will have until August 2026 to comply. Privacy Commissioner Michael Webster said agencies would need to weigh up the effectiveness and appropriateness of their biometrics use, put privacy safeguards in place and let people know when their biometric information was being collected. He said the use of biometric data was increasing in New Zealand but should only be used if it was necessary, effective and proportionate. "Because of its sensitivity - it is the most sensitive personal information - we thought it was timely to create some stronger and clearer rules about the use of biometric technology," he said. "We want New Zealanders to use technology well and in a privacy protective way to get both the benefit of new technology but to do it in a way that ensures that New Zealanders feel that their personal information, that their privacy, is being protected and respected." Businesses using biometric technology would have to comply with the Privacy Act and would be barred from some "particularly intrusive" uses of biometric technologies, like using them to predict people's emotions or infer information like ethnicity or sex, or other information protected under the Human Rights Act, Webster said. He said agencies introducing biometric technology would also need to assess the impact on Māori . "We know from research done before that there are concerns around bias and misidentification with the use of some biometric technologies, facial recognition technologies," he said. The code also set out specific rules for children, he said. "The code itself makes it clear that children need to have special attention paid to them in terms of the collection and stewardship and management of their personal information," he said. Webster said many people would be aware of the Foodstuffs North Island had been trialling facial recognition technology (FRT) in supermarkets . An Office of the Privacy Commissioner inquiry earlier this year found it raised privacy concerns, like the unnecessary or unfair collection of a customer's information, misidentification, technical bias and its ability to be used for surveillance. Webster said the business had taken strong steps to protect privacy and would likely meet the new code, although further improvements might be needed. "I think one of the things that Foodstuffs North Island will have to do is again assess the way it's running the use of FRT," he said. He said the code would not cover the health sector, which would continue to be governed by the health code. It also excluded people's use of entertainment devices or personal health devices like virtual reality headsets or Fitbits. Webster said the commission had prepared detailed guidance for public sector agencies, businesses and organisations. "We've tried to anticipate the sorts of questions that they might have, and written guidance to support them and ensure that if they do decide to use biometric technology, it is governed under the a way that is lawful," he said.
