Diogo Jota, Liverpool and Portugal footballer, dies aged 28 in car crash

The Guardian03-07-2025
The Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has been killed in a car accident in north-western Spain. He was 28, a father of three young children and had married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, less than two weeks ago.
Liverpool said they were devastated and tributes were paid by Portugal's prime minister and the country's football federation. It is understood that Jota and his brother, 26-year-old André, who was also killed, were travelling in a car that came off a road in the province of Zamora. André was a professional footballer with the second-tier Portuguese club Penafiel.
The cause of the accident, which happened at about midnight on Wednesday, is not clear, but according to police reports the driver lost control after one of the car's rear tyres was punctured. The car, a Lamborghini, burst into flames and firefighters had to extinguish a blaze in the surrounding countryside caused by the accident.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club. He won the Premier League title, the FA Cup and League Cup with Liverpool and the Championship title with Wolves in 2018, and was a two-time winner of the Nations League with Portugal. He was an immensely popular figure in the Liverpool dressing room with a warm and friendly personality.
'Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,' said a club statement which also requested 'the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.'
Jota and his partner were married in Porto on 22 June and announced the news in an Instagram post a few days ago. On Monday Rute shared more pictures from their wedding day and wrote: 'My dream came true.' Jota commented: 'I'm the lucky one.' They had met in high school and started going out in 2013, a year before he turned professional.
Portugal's prime minister, Luís Montenegro, wrote on social media: 'The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal's name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports.'
Pedro Proença, the president of the Portuguese FA, wrote on social media: 'The Portuguese football federation and the entire Portuguese football community are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, this morning in Spain. Much more than a fantastic player, who played almost 50 matches for the national A team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.
'On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players played respectively.
'The Portuguese football federation has already asked Uefa for a minute's silence this Thursday, before our team's match against Spain in the Women's European Championship. We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.'
The flag on Liverpool town hall has been lowered to half mast as a mark of respect for Jota and his brother.

Man Utd respond to offer to sign £66m former Arsenal and Chelsea target

Manchester United have been offered former Arsenal and Chelsea transfer target Dusan Vlahovic as Ruben Amorim searches for a new striker. Amorim is determined to welcome a new goalscorer to Old Trafford this summer after current first-choice striker Rasmus Hojlund endured a dismal 2024-25 campaign. Hojlund, who completed a £72m move from Atalanta in 2023, scored just four goals in the Premier League as United slumped to a 15th-place finish. Amorim was hoping to reunite with his former Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres but the Sweden international rejected the Red Devils in favour of a move to Arsenal. Manchester United have since been heavily linked with a move for Benjamin Sesko but face serious competition from Newcastle United in the race to sign the RB Leipzig forward. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. Sesko does not boast the goalscoring record of Gyokeres but has contributed 39 goals over the past two seasons and, at 22, has time on his side to improve. United have identified Sesko as their priority target for the striker position after going cold on Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson. But Newcastle appear to be leading the battle to sign Sesko, having made a second offer for the Slovenia international on Monday after their opening £70m bid was knocked back. Clubs around Europe are fully aware of United's pursuit of a striker and as a result some have offered unwanted players to Sir Jim Ratcliffe. One such example is Juventus, who have contacted Manchester United in recent days to offer them the chance to sign Serbia star Vlahovic. The 25-year-old has scored 58 goals in 145 appearances for Juve since completing a £66m move from Fiorentina in 2022. Speaking last week, Juventus chief Damien Comolli confirmed the club would sell Vlahovic this summer if they received a 'good proposal'. 'We have agreed with Dusan on his exit this summer if we get a good proposal,' he said. 'But he can only leave with a good bid and we've not received it so far.' More Trending According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United rejected the chance to sign Vlahovic, telling Juventus their sole focus is currently on Sesko. The Series A giants were informed United were still hopeful of securing a deal for Sesko but could reconsider their interest in Vlahovic should Newcastle beat them to their No. 1 target. Vlahovic was heavily linked with Arsenal before and after his 2022 move to Arsenal, while Chelsea were said to be considering a move before they signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Ex-Manchester United striker Louis Saha recently urged his former club to target Vlahovic, saying: 'His numbers are good, his profile is good and he has experience. It would be a good signing in my eyes.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Inside Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham sacking as Daniel Levy reveals awkward chat after Europa League heroics

The ex-Celtic favourite was brutally binned by Spurs just weeks after ending the club's 17-year trophy drought Daniel Levy had doubled down on Tottenham 's decision to sack Europa League-winning boss Ange Postecoglou. ‌ The Spurs supremo decided to pull the trigger just weeks after Postecoglou led the North London club to European glory. ‌ Ex- Celtic favourite Postecoglou boldly vowed to end Tottenham's 17-year wait for a trophy and was true to his word after beating Manchester United in May's final. ‌ But a catastrophic Premier League campaign ended with the Lilywhites finishing fourth bottom on just 38 points - and the Aussie paid the price with his job after two rollercoaster seasons at the helm. Levy took some heat from supporters and pundits for wielding the axe and the chairman had to justify his decision in an awkward conversation with Postecoglou. He told the Overlap with SkyBet: "Ultimately, the decision sits with me, but it's always a collective decision. ‌ "We have a board of directors, but under the board, we have a group of technical staff, and they advise. "We had to explain the decision to part ways with Ange. Ange just won us a trophy – a European trophy – highly significant and he's always going to be in our history. ‌ 'However, we couldn't lose sight of the fact that we finished 17th in the league, we lost 22 Premier League games, and it's impossible for Tottenham to be in that position, and so we had to take the emotion out of it and we had to give some data points as to why we decided to do what we did. "Whichever level you do it, no one likes telling somebody, 'You're losing your job', but it is the nature of football. "We're there to win and yes, we won a European trophy – and it was fantastic – but we also need to win on all fronts – and the Premier League says it all." ‌ Tottenham moved on quickly from Postecoglou by luring Thomas Frank from Brentford as their new head coach. Levy added: "Whenever you appoint a coach, you always believe it's right and you need a lot of ingredients for it to be right. Thomas Frank is a highly intelligent individual; he's got a fantastic way about him in terms of communication. "He will be great at developing both young players and older players – and making them better. "He gets the style of football we want to play; he understands that Rome wasn't built in a day – we haven't set him: 'You've got to win the league this year'. We just want to compete at the highest level." Ruben Amorim's two decisions hint next Man Utd transfer is already decided

Ruben Amorim is ringing the changes this summer after telling five players to find new clubs, while Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are leading Manchester United's rebuild - but the manager is still chasing a new midfielder Manchester United look to be lining up a new midfield signing after Ruben Amorim signalled his intention to loan out youngster Toby Collyer, with senior colleague Casemiro identified as a squad player this season. ‌ Amorim has been overseeing a huge rebuild of his squad this summer as he bids to erase the heartache of last season, when the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League after 18 losses. Marcus Rashford has already departed while four other players have been told to find new clubs. ‌ United have been working on refining their tactics and fitness under Amorim during their pre-season tour in the United States, where they won the Premier League Summer Series, with new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo bedding into the squad. ‌ But while the team have been unbeaten in pre-season so far and look a much improved side, Amorim still isn't satisfied having previously complained that his midfield has "a lack of pace". And Amorim's actions have hinted that United's next addition could very well be a midfielder, according to the Manchester Evening News, with Collyer set to be sent out on loan. Collyer was a squad player under Amorim last season as he was given a chance off the bench in ten games and also earned three starts in cup competitions, but the United boss wants more top-level experience to help the team control games. There have also been concerns over Manuel Ugarte after he struggled in the 2-2 friendly draw with Everton, failing to deal with their physicality and aggressive press. Casemiro is also not a player Amorim appears to look at with optimism after he showed signs that he was struggling to keep up with the pace of elite football last season. ‌ This season he will be a squad player after he was not mentioned in Amorim's six-man leadership group for the season, despite being included in it under the reign of Erik ten Hag. Amorim will be looking to starlet Kobbie Mainoo for the future but for now he will need a suitable option who could play alongside him - or Ugarte. The club have been linked with moves for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, while Valencia star Javi Guerra is also understood to be a target. Further forward in midfield, United have also been credited with a big-money move for Barcelona's Fermin Lopez. The biggest priority for Amorim in the transfer market, however, is a new centre forward. The club are in talks to sign Red Bull Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, but face stiff competition from Newcastle, who can offer Champions League football.
