H1 car sales see 12% dip; festive rebound expected

1 2 A hmedabad: Car sales in Gujarat continued to face headwinds in the first half of 2025, with registrations dropping 12.2% year-on-year, report Niyati Parikh & Himanshu Kaushik. Between Jan and June, total registrations fell to 161,363 units from 183,866 in H1 2024, reflecting a challenging market for the automobile industry. Dealers attribute the decline to poor consumer sentiment due to the stock market crash in the initial part of the year, followed by the Indo-Pak border tensions and even the geopolitical conflicts. Even as the Rath Yatra muhurat revved up two-wheeler sales, it failed to add momentum to passenger car sales, which remained lukewarm. According to MoRTH data, car sales rose by a modest 8.2% during the month, totalling 23,744 units as against 21,946 units sold in June last year. While the uptick broke the trend of subdued numbers over the past five months, bringing in some momentum, dealers believe that overall sentiment in the car market is down. "Rath Yatra is considered very auspicious for the purchase of vehicles, including two- and four-wheelers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jena: Nur 700 Plätze. Gutes Hören Undo While sales did increase marginally, the numbers do not reflect the kind of festive optimism that is typically seen during this time of the year. Even on the muhurat day, sales remained flat. This is mainly due to the poor sentiment among consumers and lack of confidence in spending," said Pranav Shah, Chairman of the Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association, Gujarat. "Car sales have been muted as there is a slowdown in the market. Entry-level cars have seen the most impact, as younger buyers are increasingly shifting towards SUVs and mid-segment cars. With economic uncertainty and price sensitivity still high, many buyers are waiting for a clearer picture before making purchase decisions," the officer said. "In rural Gujarat, the agricultural economy was not performing as expected due to underwhelming summer and winter crop yields, which also affected demand for four-wheelers, especially in smaller towns and talukas," he further added. Two-wheeler registrations jumped 18.6% year-on-year to 100,615 units, up from 84,803 in June 2024, according to data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Still, the June boost lifted dealer sentiment, especially after a sluggish start to the year. However, the overall figures for the first half of 2025 continue to reflect a challenging market. Between January and June, car registrations in Gujarat dropped 12.2%, falling to 161,363 units from 183,866 in H1 2024. Two-wheelers, on the other hand, continued to maintain momentum. Registrations rose 3.4% to 568,421 units in H1 2025, compared to 549,805 in the same period last year. "Retail sentiment is gradually improving. With a good monsoon, stable fuel prices, and positive signals from the broader economy, we expect traction to pick up during Navratri and Diwali," Shah added. Tractor sales remained muted, but most other segments are showing early signs of revival. Dealers across Gujarat are now gearing up for the festive stretch, hoping it brings the auto market firmly back into gear.

Govt seeks WII help for green study on proposed Puri airport

1 2 Bhubaneswar: State govt wrote to the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) on Monday to seek its expertise on alleged forest and wildlife violations related to the proposed Shree Jagannath International Airport in Puri. The regional office of the ministry of environment, forests and climate change had pointed out some violations in the project, leading the ministry's Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) to put its clearance on hold. The committee advised the state govt to collaborate with WII for a study. "WII received Odisha's letter regarding the requirement of our recommendation in terms of the impact on wildlife in the case of the proposed airport project. No timeline has been fixed so far to form a team for the study and make necessary observations," Gobind Sagar Bhardwaj, director of WII, told TOI. The govt's letter to WII and the latter's response come days after the transport department expressed confidence in taking the project further with the recommendation of environmental clearance (EC) coming from the expert appraisal committee (EAC) under the ministry. EAC and FAC are two separate committees, and their mandates are different, officials said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Although EAC's recommendation for EC could help the govt make certain moves, there are still conditions. In addition, WII's opinion will be a factor in getting FAC's final nod," a govt source said. The airport is proposed to be developed over 471 hectares at an estimated cost of Rs 5,631 crore. Forest land to be diverted, if clearance is received, is spread over 27.88 hectares. Officials said WII's study will focus on migratory bird routes and the possible impact on Olive Ridley sea turtles and Irrawaddy dolphins close to the airport site in Brahmagiri. "FAC has also asked for a conservation and mitigation plan, requiring approval from the chief wildlife warden. It also highlighted environmental concerns about the proposed cutting of 13,000 trees currently serving as a bio-shield and coastal shelter," a govt officer said. Based on concerns of the regional office, FAC, as per minutes of its meeting on June 24, decided to seek an explanation from the state govt on building the airport in a fragile coastal belt. "The govt, with WII's help, has been asked to justify the project, giving reasons that it won't invite climate eventualities," a forest officer said.

Jane Street case: Ex-Sebi chief Madhabi Buch denies regulatory failures

Madhabi Buch (File photo) Mumbai: Former Sebi chief Madhabi Puri Buch has come out strongly against those pointing fingers at the regulator in the Jane Street market manipulation case, indicating it was a regulatory failure due to which US-based algo trading major Jane Street thrived with its alleged illegal acts for years. On Tuesday, Puri Buch issued a statement saying it was in April 2024 (when she was at the helm) that Sebi had formed a team of officials from various departments and started looking into Jane Street's affairs. The statement by Puri Buch came on the day Jane Street told its employees that Sebi had "many erroneous or unsupported assertions" about its trading activity in the country and it would "defend itself against the accusations". The trading firm said it strongly rejected "the premise and substance of (Sebi's) order", and said the markets regulator was "fundamentally mistaken" about its trades, reports noted. Jane Street also said its trading activities were "unambiguously good for the health of financial markets". On her part, Puri Buch, through a one-page statement, said that the "identification of index manipulation by Jane Street and initiation of numerous actions (by the regulator), including a cease & desist instruction, were carried out by Sebi between April 2024 and Feb 2025." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally Undo Puri Buch left her office on February 28, 2025 after completing her three-year term. On July 3, that is more than a year after it started investigating Jane Street's affairs in India, Sebi banned the US-based algo trading major and three of its arms from the Indian market. Sebi also asked Jane Street to disgorge nearly Rs 4,850 crore that it sees as ill-gotten profit. In her statement, the former Sebi chief said that some entities in the market were trying to "create a false narrative by implying that there was regulatory failure by Sebi in the (Jane Street) matter during that period and attributing false motives for the same". " Right from April 2024, Sebi was seized of the matter relating to the Jane Street group and took numerous steps to examine and investigate the extremely complex structures and strategies deployed by them and to verify and analyse the data.
