Syrian Red Crescent says first aid convoy enters Druze-majority Sweida city - Region
A fragile ceasefire appeared to be holding after Druze fighters retook control of Sweida city and government security forces deployed to the province, following violence since last Sunday that has killed more than 1,000 people, according to a monitor.
An AFP correspondent near Sweida city saw a convoy including trucks and ambulances bearing the Red Crescent symbol heading towards the city.
"It's the first convoy to enter after the recent events, and it has arrived and is now inside Sweida," said Syrian Red Crescent media and communications official Omar al-Malki.
He told AFP the convoy would be followed by others and said it came "in coordination with the government bodies and the local authorities in Sweida", which are controlled by the Druze.
The convoy of 32 vehicles was carrying basics including food, medical and fuel supplies as well as body bags, Malki said.
Residents of Sweida have been holed up in their homes without electricity and water, and food supplies have been scarce.
An AFP photographer said the morgue at Sweida's main hospital was full and bodies were lying on the ground outside the building.
The government instead said its own convoy of more than 40 aid trucks, accompanied by three ministers, was unable to enter Sweida.
A foreign ministry statement said that "outlawed armed militias loyal to Hikmat al-Hijri denied the entry of the convoy", referring to one of Sweida's most influential Druze religious leaders.
The authorities have strongly criticised Hijri after he called for international protection for the Druze and launched an appeal for assistance to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a statement on Sunday, Hijri welcomed "all humanitarian aid coming to the stricken province of Sweida through international organisations and bodies".
He called for "an immediate end to the brutal attack on Sweida province and a halt to disinformation campaigns... that aim to stoke violence and hatred".
Neighbouring Israel, which is also home to a Druze community, has presented itself as a defender of the minority in Syria.

Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, condemned in the strongest terms the Knesset's vote yesterday on a bill imposing Israeli control over the West Bank, occupied in 1967. He stated that the bill represents a link in an ongoing plan to impose a fait accompli by perpetuating the occupation and annexing the occupied Palestinian territory. Jamal Rushdi, the Secretary-General's official spokesman, quoted Aboul Gheit as affirming that the occupation's attempts to change the legal status of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are unacceptable and have no legal basis. The West Bank is occupied territory under international law as recognized by the United Nations, and Knesset laws will not change this fact, said Aboul-Gheit. Aboul Gheit called on the international community to firmly confront such legally invalid and morally reprehensible measures, stressing the need to adhere to Security Council resolutions, most notably Resolutions 242 (1967) and 2234 (2016), as a basis for ending the occupation, in the face of Israel's plans to normalize the legal status of occupation by annexing the West Bank. He added that extremist settlements and religious movements within Israel would lead the entire region to catastrophic religious confrontations if they are not confronted and their obsessive ambitions are not challenged. Earlier on Thursday, Egypt, along with a group of Arab and Islamic nations, strongly condemned the Israeli Knesset's approval of the declaration calling for the imposition of the so-called 'Israeli sovereignty' over the occupied West Bank. Syrian, Israeli ministers to attend US-brokered meeting in Paris: Senior diplomat - Region
Damascus's top diplomat Asaad al-Shaibani is set to meet an Israeli minister on Thursday in Paris to discuss recent sectarian violence in Syria's south that had drawn in Israel's military, a senior diplomat told AFP. The US-brokered talks would be the first ministerial meeting between the new Syrian authorities and Israel. The two countries have technically been at war since 1948, and Israel has occupied the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967. "There will be a Syrian-Israeli security meeting in Paris today, and Tom Barrack will facilitate it," the diplomat said, referring to the US special envoy for Syria. The diplomat said that Shaibani and Israel's Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer are expected to discuss "the topic of southern Syria", where deadly sectarian violence earlier this month prompted Israeli intervention. Dermer was already in Paris, according to an airport official. The senior diplomat, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said that Shaibani was due to arrive in the city later on Thursday. Barrack, Washington's ambassador to Turkey, was also due to meet Paris's top diplomat Jean-Noel Barrot, according to a French foreign ministry source. Israel launched several air strikes on Syrian government positions in Sweida, a Druze-majority province in the country's south, saying it wanted to protect the minority community after sectarian clashes had erupted. The Israeli strikes also reached Damascus, hitting the area of the presidential palace and the army headquarters, in a bid to force government troops to leave Sweida city -- which eventually happened under a ceasefire announced by the authorities. Before the violence in Sweida, Syrian and Israeli officials had met in Baku on July 12, according to a diplomatic source in Damascus, coinciding with a visit to Azerbaijan by Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. After the overthrow of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, Israel carried out hundreds of air strikes in Syria to prevent key military assets falling into the hands of the new Islamist-led administration. Israel also sent troops into the UN-patrolled buffer zone that used to separate the opposing forces in the strategic Golan Heights, from which it has conducted forays deeper into southern Syria, demanding the area's demilitarisation.
