Revving it up with Montclair's Bug Bashing RC Club

SECLUDED behind the Durban Wanderers Club is a unique, high-octane world where motors rev, new bonds are created and Sundays are spent with high-speed family-fun. The Bug Bashing RC Club is encouraging the community to join the exciting world of radio-controlled (RC) fun.

What began as a small group of friends with a common passion for RC cars has grown into a thriving club that's looking to expand the thrill of RC cars to other community members.
Gareth Casey, one of the members of the club, said, 'A RC club is a gathering of people family, friends, anybody who enjoys radio-controlled cars ranging from electric cars, nitro cars and two stroke cars. It's a place where new friendships are formed and a place to have a great time, to learn new things and get to understand the ins and out of the hobby.'
Shane Edwards, long-time RC enthusiast and founding member of the club, said that some RC clubs closed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Years removed since Covid-19 and Shane was determined to rekindle his passion and started the new club with new friends.
'The actual club has been open for almost a year, but we have been doing this together for a few years, together we thought of opening a club for the community to come and have fun on a weekend, play with their cars and spend time with their families and to relax,' said Casey.
The RC club boasts four different tracks, a standard race track, drift track, crawler course and children's track for the young drivers. Casey said the club facilities also include braai areas, a bar, toilets and even a takeaway room for those who don't want to prepare food themselves. 'It's not about who's the fastest or who has the best car. It's about being part of something. The racing is fun, but the camaraderie is what keeps us coming back,' said Casey.
The club meets on Sundays and on public holidays, whereas the track is open seven days a week.
Anyone who is interested in joining with the Bug Bashing RC Club or learning more about the sport is invited to contact Shane Edwards on 061 267 0394. You can also witness what the club is about on Facebook at Bug Bashing RC or YouTube at bugbashing.

Cape Town records hundreds of accidents in the past 10 days

The City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services recorded over 230 accidents on the City's roads this past week. According to a statement, in the past 10 days, 162 motor vehicle accidents and 74 pedestrian-related incidents were recorded by the department. The stats were recorded between Friday, 27 June and Sunday, 6 July, when the City experienced particularly wet weather conditions. The City said that these numbers were a stark reminder of the importance of increased vigilance on the roads during wet weather conditions, for both motorists as well as pedestrians. Troublingly, these stats also did not include incidents that were not reported to a central point, including accidents that did not result in injuries, where the parties involved reported it directly to the nearest police station. 'We caution road users all of the time about adjusting their behaviour to account for the specific conditions. Motor vehicle accidents cause huge emotional and financial strain, even if just a fender bender. They also have the potential to cause significant traffic delays. Let this be a reminder to everyone to slow down in general, but especially in poor driving conditions,' Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, said. South African racing driver Jordan Pepper wins his first German DTM race

Image: Jordan Pepper via Instagram South Africa has another rising star in the world of German Touring Car racing, with Jordan Pepper scooping his first DTM victory over the weekend. The 28-year-old became the second South African to achieve success in the German racing series in just three years, with compatriot Sheldon van der Linde having won the DTM series in 2022. Pepper, who competes in a TGI Team Lamborghini Huracan Evo2, currently lies third in the 2025 DTM Championship, following his flag-to-flag victory at the Norisring on Saturday, which was the seventh race of the season. He was also the fastest in practice and qualifying. Jordan Pepper: a rising DTM star. Image: Supplied "What an unbelievably emotional moment for me. I am incredibly proud and still cannot really believe it. The final laps seemed to last forever. However, I gave it my all and remained focussed right through to the finish," a delighted Pepper said after the event. He surged ahead of the field, while Thomas Preining (Porsche 911) and Maro Engel (Mercedes AMG GT) fought for their eventual second and third places, aided by a collision that put second-placed Nicki Thiim (Lamborghini) out of contention. Pepper is no stranger to international racing success behind the wheel of some prestigious machinery. In 2020, he won the Bathurst 12-hour as a Bentley works driver, playing a pivotal role in the British marque's success in the GT3 era, which sadly ended with the pandemic. However, after joining Lamborghini in 2021, Pepper went on to dominate the GTWC America championship, alongside fellow factory driver Andrea Caldarelli. Jordan Pepper is the son of South African touring car driver Iain Pepper and brother of Tasmin Pepper, who competed in the former W-Series, a global championship for female drivers. He started karting at a young age, and after joining the VW Polo Cup in 2012, Pepper won the 'Rookie of the Year' award after finishing third in the championship. But there were bigger things ahead, and in 2015, Pepper moved overseas to race for the ABT Sportsline Audi team in the ADAC GT Series. IOL Motoring
