UAE sees 3.8% GDP growth in first 9 months of 2024

Yemen Online06-03-2025
The UAE witnessed a 3.8 percent annual expansion in its gross domestic product in the first nine months of 2024, driven by the growth of the Emirates' non-oil sector.
Also during this period, the UAE's non-oil economy grew by 4.5 percent year on year to 987 billion dirhams ($268.74 billion), the state news agency WAM reported.
The report added that the contribution of non-oil activities to UAE's real GDP reached 74.6 percent by the end of the first nine months of 2024, while oil-related activities contributed 25.4 percent.
The growth of the non-oil sector in the UAE aligns with the broader trend in the Middle East region, where countries such as Saudi Arabia are pursuing economic diversification programs.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, UAE's minister of economy, said that the continuous growth of the country's economy reaffirms the success of the Emirates' economic policies and strategies to enhance diversification.
He added that the country also facilitates a friendly environment for business activities and promotes the expansion of new economic sectors as a key driver for sustainable economic and social development.
An analysis by the Central Bank of UAE in December said that the country's GDP is expected to post a growth of 4 percent in 2024, driven by strong performance across key non-oil sectors, including tourism, transportation, and financial services, as well as insurance, construction, real estate, and communications.
CBUAE added that the Emirates' economic growth is projected to accelerate further to 4.5 percent in 2025 and 5.5 percent in 2026.
The apex financial institution further said that the UAE's non-oil GDP is projected to expand by 4.9 percent in 2024 and 5 percent in 2025.
The study attributed this projected boost to strategic government policies aimed at attracting foreign investment and promoting economic diversification.
In terms of the economic growth in the region, data released by Bahrain's Information & eGovernment Authority in January revealed that the country's GDP witnessed an increased rate of 2.1 percent in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
In December, Qatar's National Planning Center revealed that the country's GDP rose by 2 percent in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in the previous year.
Earlier this month, the Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Statistics revealed that the nation's non-oil exports increased by 17.3 percent in the fourth quarter 2024 to reach SR82.05 billion ($21.88 billion).

Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) and Chairman of the National Committee for Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism and Illegal Organisations, called the decision a reflection of the country's 'wise leadership' and long-term vision, a WAM report said. Diplomatic efforts lead to key breakthrough Balama credited the diplomatic work of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Chairman of the Higher Committee overseeing the National Anti-Money Laundering Strategy, for helping secure the EU's decision. 'This marks a significant step in establishing an advanced financial ecosystem based on effective governance and a forward-looking national strategy,' he said. UAE's aviation authority announces framework for regulating electric air taxis

The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority has announced a framework to regulate the use of electric and conventional helicopters in the Emirates. The rollout of the regulations will allow both electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and conventional helicopters to operate interchangeably on the same infrastructure, reported state news agency Wam. The announcement came as two test flights took place in the UAE in recent days. On Monday, California-based Joby Aviation, in partnership with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, carried out an electric air taxi test flight ahead of a planned launch of commercial operations next year. Archer Aviation completed the first test flight in Abu Dhabi of its air taxi on Wednesday. 'The UAE has always been at the forefront of excellence in aviation. This pioneering regulatory framework does not merely enable new technology; it redefines how aviation evolves,' said Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director general of the GCAA. 'It reflects our commitment to innovation in developing a supportive ecosystem for the growth of this vital sector and a future where advanced air mobility is seamlessly integrated into our national infrastructure.' The newly announced regulations will allow for dual-use between conventional helicopter pads and electric vertical take-off and landing pads. The framework will enable the UAE to adopt a flexible regulatory environment that keeps pace with emerging technologies without compromising safety standards, said Aqeel Al Zarouni, assistant director general for aviation safety affairs at the GCAA.

UAE unveils new dirham symbol and digital currency

The Central Bank of the UAE on Thursday introduced a new symbol for the nation's currency, both in its physical and digital forms, marking a significant step in reinforcing the UAE's status as a leading global financial center. According to the Emirates News Agency or WAM, the newly unveiled dirham symbol draws inspiration from the English letter 'D' and features two horizontal lines that represent financial stability. The design is also a nod to the UAE flag, symbolizing national pride and resilience. This symbol will serve as a global representation of the dirham, promoting the UAE's currency across international markets. The launch of the symbol coincides with the UAE's adoption of the FX Global Code, which positions the CBUAE as the first central bank in the Arab region to join this important framework. The FX Global Code is renowned for promoting best practices and ethical standards within the foreign exchange market, and this step further enhances the UAE's commitment to integrity and transparency in financial dealings. Alongside the physical dirham symbol, the CBUAE is advancing the issuance and circulation of the digital dirham, a core initiative of the Financial Infrastructure Transformation Program launched in 2023. The digital dirham will feature a circular design, incorporating the UAE flag's colors, which reinforces the nation's sense of pride and modernity in the evolving financial landscape. Khaled Mohamed Balama, governor of the CBUAE, expressed his enthusiasm for these transformative steps: 'We are proud to unveil today the new symbol for the UAE's national currency and the design of the digital dirham wallet,' he stated. 'The digital dirham, built on blockchain technology, is expected to enhance financial stability, improve inclusion, increase resilience, and help combat financial crime.' He further emphasized that the digital dirham is set to drive innovation in the financial sector by enabling the creation of new digital products and services, while lowering costs and expanding access to international markets. The digital dirham will be made available through licensed financial institutions, including banks, exchange houses, fintech firms, and other financial services providers. It will be legally recognized as a universal payment method, alongside physical currency, creating a seamless experience for both digital and traditional transactions. Key features of the digital dirham include: Tokenization: This innovative process will enhance financial inclusion by allowing fractionalized access to digital assets, thereby improving liquidity. Smart contracts: The digital dirham will facilitate the use of smart contracts, automating the execution of complex transactions, including multi-party agreements and conditional obligations, with instant settlement. To support the digital currency, the CBUAE has developed a robust and secure platform for its issuance and circulation. This platform includes a user-friendly digital dirham wallet, designed to handle a wide range of financial transactions, including retail and wholesale payments, cross-border transfers, withdrawals, and top-ups. It also ensures ease of access and a convenient user experience, adhering to industry best practices. As the UAE continues to lead in the digital economy, the digital dirham platform is designed to adapt to emerging financial needs, facilitating innovative solutions and reinforcing the country's position as a global leader in digital payments.
