Cannes Film Festival 2025: Dhanush to play former Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in biopic
The biopic will be helmed by director Om Raut, who is known for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.
The screenplay is penned by Saiwyn Quadras, whose writing credits include the acclaimed Bollywood biopics Neerja, Maidaan and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran.
"In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness," Raut said in a statement. "He was a man who was known for the power of education, excellence and indigenous innovation."
"To bring his story to the screen is an artistic challenge and a moral and cultural responsibility. It's a story that's inspirational for global youth and especially the youth of the Global South," he said. "...His life is a lesson that is bound to connect with people no matter who they are and where they come from."
Producer Abhishek Agarwal, too, shared his excitement.
However, not much details have been shared by the makers of the biopic.
The film is backed by Agarwal and Bhushan Kumar, and produced by Agarwal, Kumar, Krishan Kumar, and Anil Sunkara.

'Bigg Boss' is a crash course in real life: Dubai-based actor Sara Arfeen Khan
As much as it is speculated that reality shows are scripted and dramatised, former Bigg Boss inmate, the no-nonsense, actor and women's coach Sarah Arfeen Khan feels otherwise. "It has strengthened my bond with my husband though several people tried to pull us apart in the show. Quite like what happens in real life," she laughs. Her husband, life coach Arfeen Khan was an inmate as well. The couple and their six year old twins, live between Dubai and Mumbai. Recommended For You Sarah was last seen in the Rohit Shetty starrer Singham Again , and has been part of films such as Total Siyappa , and noted television serials. " Bigg Boss was a crazy ride. I went in with the intention of having fun. When I walked in with Arfeen, we were targeted first. All of them wanted to break us and tried to pit us against each other because they felt that we symbolised double power. Honestly, people like to see warring couples on TV. People enjoy drama and Bigg Boss is all about drama in real life." That's why she suggests that people who are looking for long-term relationships should enter the Bigg Boss house as a couple. 'It's really a crash course in real life. If you sustain, then you are sorted for life.' In Bigg Boss , nomination is a process where housemates vote to put fellow contestants up for potential eviction from the show. Each week, contestants nominate one or more housemates they want to see leave the house. The contestants with the most nominations are then put up for a public vote, and the contestant with the fewest public votes is eliminated. 'When I started nominating people, it felt weird at first but then I realised how important it is to be non diplomatic and say it the way it is. It is tremendously liberating.' It's a practice she has adopted in her real life. "Often, we tend to walk out of sticky situations, to avoid confrontation, but in the Bigg Boss house, I didn't have that space and raw emotions emerged.' So, how much of the show is about acting and how much is real? "There is a lot of acting in Bigg Boss because people can fake it. But I cannot and my reactions were natural. People trigger you and you cannot act unbothered all the time." Sara explains no one is handed a script though the makers have a script in place. So, what next for the actor, wife and mother of two? "I have shot a couple of music videos.' Her life has largely been unplanned — right from the time she was approached for a Star One show in London at 21, while she was at a restaurant and on the next table sat a producer. She then went on to do powerful roles on TV. "I hated the 'kitchen politics,' type of soaps and debuted in a powerful role based on the story of Priyanka Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. It was called Dhoond Legi Manzil Hamein , directed by Sanjay Surkar. She was then approached for a travel show for the Epic channel, where she covered religious places of India. Inspired by her husband life coach Arfeen Khan who has an impressive list of celebs as clients, she decided to work with women. "I have studied early child development and I always feel that once a child is born, the focus is always on the child and less on the mother. So I teach women the importance of self love. Women need to show up for themselves apart from being nurturers, caregivers and being just professionals.' After Bigg Boss , she admits that she is a bit lost because there is a dearth of star managers in Mumbai. "I have so many friends from the Bollywood film industry and have introduced many newcomers to them. Those people end up getting roles, I don't (laughs). I have realised that in Bollywood, it's not just enough to know people personally. You have to carve out your own journey and if it is written for you, it will happen." A word of advice from Sara to aspiring actors. "You need to be thick skinned, ready to be judged, trolled and booed. A career in cinema is not merely about opportunities, glamour, talent and good looks. You have to have the skin of a pachyderm (laughs)." She also dissuades newcomers to trust someone completely and keep to their boundaries. 'Don't go all out till you are sure. We can end up trusting the wrong people but we can always draw boundaries and keep ourselves out of trouble. Draw that boundary and draw it fiercely,' she says.

How Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's Saiyaara became one of biggest Bollywood films of the year
A Bollywood love story with a moderate budget and two fresh faces is taking the Indian box office by storm, becoming one of the year's top-grossing films in just two weeks. Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri, features debutant Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda in the lead. The film, which was released on July 18, was made on a budget of approximately 60 crore (600 million) rupees, according to Financial Express. It has already collected more than 327 crore (3.2 billion) rupees at the box office, making it the second-highest grossing Indian film of the year, behind the blockbuster Chhaava, which was released in February. What is Saiyaara about? Saiyaara centres around an emotionally-unstable rising musician Krish (Panday) who forms a deep connection with a shy poet Vaani, played by Padda. It is loosely based on the 2004 South Korean film A Moment to Remember, about a couple whose relationship is tested after marriage. Director Suri is known his emotionally-charged romantic films, from Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain. What are critics and audiences saying about the film? Saiyaara has received generally positive reviews from film critics, many praising Panday and Padda's performances. The film seems to have struck a chord with Gen Z audiences with many of them sharing clips of themselves on social media crying and cheering in the cinema. One viral clip even showed a fan watching the film with an IV drip hooked to his hand. Film trade analyst Komal Nahta even called Saiyaara a 'modern-day DDLJ ', comparing it to the 1995 love story, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, a massive box office success considered one of the greatest romantic Bollywood films. 'Some may find what I'm going to say here outrageous,' Nahta posted on X the week of Saiyaara 's release. 'But I've always spoken business, and so here I am: Looking to the fact that today's collections would surpass Friday's record-smashing collections and today's footfalls will be more than Saturday's, I feel inclined to say that YRF and Mohit Suri's Saiyaara is turning out to be Aditya Chopra and YRF's modern-day DDLJ.' The film's soundtrack, featuring songs by hitmakers Mithoon and Tanishk Bagchi among others, have also become massive hits. As of Monday afternoon, the film's title song, Saiyaara, has garnered more than 150 million views on YouTube. Many have also credited the film's success to its deliberately low-key marketing by producer and distributor Yash Raj Films, foregoing conventional promotional routes or using star power to hype up interest in the film – instead using word of mouth and social media reactions to create buzz. Who are Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda? The cousin of actress Ananya Panday and the nephew of actor Chunky Ahaan Panday, has acting pedigree. His sister, Alanna Panday, is a YouTube star, while his mother Deanne Panday, is a known wellness coach, having author several popular health books. His father, Chikki Panday, is a businessman and Chunky's brother. Padda, meanwhile, is a former model, best known for her role in the 2024 Prime Video series Big Girls Don't Cry. Originally from Punjab, Padda is also a singer and songwriter. Saiyaara is her first major film role.
