EXCLUSIVE To passengers for the maiden voyage of a new luxury sleeper train, we're sorry to announce this service has been cancelled! Rail fans who paid up to £55,000 for three-day trip to Cornwall have journey canned

Daily Maila day ago
With a three-day rail trip to Cornwall costing more than a holiday to Venice on the Orient Express, you might expect Britain's newest luxury sleeper train to run on time.
But to the dismay of its well-heeled passengers – who had forked out a minimum of £22,400 for a 'curated' luxury weekend tour of the West Country – the maiden voyage of the refurbished Britannic Explorer has hit the buffers.
Guests had celebrated the launch of the rebranded 1970s train with a glitzy three-hour champagne-fuelled launch party headed by actress Keira Knightley at London Euston station last Thursday, with the inaugural trip originally scheduled for departure the following day.
Instead, the ten-coach train, rebranded with bespoke fitted carpets, plush furnishings and commissioned artworks, was returned to a depot near Southampton for 'final refinements'.
Some passengers are understood to have paid upwards of £50,000 for a three-night stay in one of the train's three 'grand suites'.
Train operator Belmond, which also runs the Orient Express, says it offered passengers a full refund 'including associated travel costs', but refused to say why the Britannic Explorer's maiden journey from London's Victoria station to Penzance had been derailed.
One enthusiast who spotted the train, which has a top speed of 75mph, at the Euston station launch party said: 'By anyone's standards this is a really expensive train trip in the UK.
'There's obviously been some complications. But I tell you what, if I'd paid 55 grand – which is what the most expensive cabin was for the trip – and then been told it was cancelled, I'd probably be a bit cheesed off.

'There was this big, noisy launch party on platform 16, screened off so regular travellers couldn't see in. By Friday morning the train had gone from Euston back to the Eastleigh works near Southampton.'
Train enthusiasts spotted Britannic Explorer when it was brought up to Victoria station for a test run on June 13 and noticed there was a problem with its retro-fitted automatic doors.
Belmond, which is owned by French luxury goods giant LVMH, says on its website that the Britannic Explorer will now be 'introduced' on July 21 with a journey from London to mid-Wales.
A company spokeswoman said: 'The adjustment to the schedule was due to final refinements being made to ensure the train operates at the highest possible standard.

Coronation Street star sparks concern as he pulls out of fan event at the last minute due to illness

A Coronation Street star sparked concern after pulling out of a fan event at the last minute after falling ill. Craig Charles, 60, was known fans for his 10-year stint as Lloyd Mullaney on the ITV show, but is also beloved for his appearance in another iconic cult show. The actor had been booked to appear at London Film and Comic-Con on Sunday, having famously played Dave Lister in BBC sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf. Fans had hoped to see him appear at the event alongside Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn and Hattie Hayridge. However, organisers took to Facebook on Sunday morning to confirm that Craig would not be attending the event. In a post, which has since been deleted, they said: 'We contacted Craig at 9am to be be told that due to a family emergency he would not be in until 11am. 'At 11:30am we spent 20 minutes knocking on his hotel room door where there was no answer. 'His Red Dwarf colleagues were able to contact him at 12.30 where he confirmed he was ill and unable to attend. These are the facts.' They added: 'The Group shot will go ahead with Danny, Robert and Hattie and ticket holders will receive an automatic £60 refund to allow for the change of line up. 'If anybody does not want the group shot, any unused tickets will automatically be refunded after the show.' The post also included a video of organisers knocking on Craig's hotel room door, but it was taken down minutes later. Hours later, Craig himself took to X to clarify that he had fallen ill and was unable to appear at the Con as planned. He wrote: 'I'd just like to say sorry to showmasters and the fans at comicon. I made it to the hotel but woke up at 3 this morning with stomach pains. Later in the afternoon, Craig himself took to X to clarify that he had fallen ill and was unable to appear at the Con as planned 'I then proceeded to be violently ill for hours. Not a pretty sight. I tried to see if it would wear off but at 10 am I called it off and came back to Manchester. 'I'm feeling slightly better now and I'm drinking lots of water and electrolytes. Again sorry for the cancellation and I look forward to next time.' Fans were quick to share their well-wishes for Craig in the comments, writing: ' Fans rushed to the comment section to share their support, with one fan posting: 'Hope you feel better. 'You don't have anything to apologise for trust me someone that just got food poisoning two days ago I know exactly what you mean by coming down with something very quickly;' 'Take care of yourself. I've been watching you as Dave Lister since I was a child, Red Dwarf was and is still my favorite show. 'Lister inspired my love for curry and good tunes. It may be sad, but you were the closest thing I had to a father figure. Love from America, my guy.' 'As long as you're on the mend that's the main thing.' MailOnline has contacted representatives for Craig Charles and London Film Comic Con for comment. Red Dwarf originally aired on BBC from 1988 and 1999, which follows technician Dave Lister, who awakens after being suspended in time for three million years, to find that he is the last living human and he's alone on the mining spacecraft. In 2009 the series was revived on Dave, and has since returned for four more series, and a 2020 special. It came just days after fellow Red Dwarf star Chris Barrie pulled out of multiple public appearances due to a mystery 'medical situation'. The TV star, 65, best known for playing uptight hologram Arnold Rimmer in Red Dwarf, was expected to reunite with his castmates at London Comic Con, but dropped out at the last minute, citing worrying health issues. In a statement posted on his website, Chris told fans: 'Hello everyone. 'I'm going to be brief, but over the last week I have been dealing with a medical situation which I am only just beginning to get my head around. He added that all planned appearances 'over the summer and into the autumn' have now been scrapped, leaving followers concerned for his well-being. 'Updates on all this will be issued as and when,' he added. While Chris didn't go into detail about the nature of his condition, he did confirm he's still hoping to keep one date in the diary, a comedy appearance at Scarborough Unleashed on November 9. He said: 'In the meantime I shall leave Scarborough on the itinerary for now and will look forward to returning there in the early winter.'

Mel B offers Spice Girls bandmates second chance to attend her wedding as she plans another 'informal and sexy' ceremony following lavish St Paul's Cathedral celebration

Mel B will be offering her Spice Girls bandmates a second chance to attend her wedding celebrations after only Emma Bunton attended the big day at St Paul's Cathedral on Saturday. Scary Spice, 50, has revealed she and new husband Rory McPhee, 37, will be jetting aboard for another ceremony, which she described as 'more informal and sexy' than her nuptials in London. Mel C, 51, and Victoria Beckham, 51, both paid tribute to the bride and groom after they were forced to miss the wedding. However Geri Halliwell has so far failed to acknowledge the star-studded nuptials. Mel B told The Sun of her plans for a second wedding to Rory, 37, later this summer and said she'd already splashed out on a gown to wear. 'In one incredible afternoon I found two perfect dresses. One beautiful classic dress by Josephine Scott, a British designer, and one stunning dramatic dress by a US designer, Justin Alexander'. MailOnline have contacted Mel's representatives for further comment. It comes after Mel B shared a glimpse of her quirky 'just married' outfit following her lavish wedding day. She took to her Instagram following the ceremony as she joined her new husband at they celebrated at their £28K reception at iconic London landmark the Shard. In the black and white snap Mel wore a white cardigan over her gorgeous bridal gown with the words 'Just Married' embroidered onto the back. The groom looked dapper in suit and kilt as he beamed at his new wife, who captioned the post: 'MARRIED'. Guests including Alan Carr and Leigh Francis were quick to offer their congratulations, while fellow bandmate Geri remained silent. The pair have a tempestuous relationship and at times have struggled to be in the same room without there being animosity. Geri continued to snub Mel B on Sunday after her lavish wedding weekend - while the likes of Heidi Klum, Paloma Faith and Kerry Katona led the stars sending the Spice Girl congratulatory messages following the ceremony. However other Spice Girl Victoria was quick to comment under Mel's post saying: 'Congratulations!!!!! We hope you had an amazing day!!!! X kisses xxxxxxxxc.' It comes after Mel B shared a glimpse of her quirky 'just married' outfit following her lavish wedding day Heidi Klum added: 'CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU BOTH. WISHING YOU LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE FOREVER.' Paloma Faith then added: 'Congrats my angel you deserve the world.' Alice Evans said: 'You deserve this! I'm so happy for you!'. Alexandra Burke posted simply saying: 'Congrats!' Katie Piper added: 'Congratulations you deserve so much love and happiness Robbie Williams' wife Ayda Field said under the post: 'Congratulations !'. It comes after Mel C shared a sweet snap of Mel B and her new husband as they celebrated their wedding day on Saturday. Sporty Spice was notably absent as her Spice Girl bandmate said 'I do' to her fiancé Rory in London in front of a string of very A-list guests. Mel was unable to attend no doubt due to scheduling conflicts, as she was performing in Sweden, but still wanted to share her excitement and happiness for the pair and took to her Instagram to share a photograph of the newlyweds. Admitting that she was 'gutted' not to be there, she made reference to the fact they would all see each other and meet up in the not too distant future. Posting some sweet words online, she gushed in the caption: 'So so happy for you both and beyond gutted I couldn't be there. Excited to celebrate with you really soon! Yippee!' Victoria also missed the ceremony but did share a sweet black and white throwback of herself and the bride with bandmates Geri, Mel C and Emma to her Instagram. Posh, 51, captioned the snap: 'Congratulations @officalmelb @rorymcphee on your special day! I couldn't be more excited for you both and wish you a lifetime of happiness! kisses xx' It comes after Mel C shared a sweet snap of Mel B and her new husband as they celebrated their wedding day And despite her absence, Posh, 51, took to Instagram to share a sweet black and white throwback of herself and the bride with bandmates Geri, Mel C and Emma Hours earlier, Victoria had also posted another tribute to the couple on Friday with a photograph of herself and Mel looking glamorous together at a recent event. She gushed in a caption: 'Sending love to you @officialmelb! @rorymcphee is a very lucky man! xx' Ahead of the wedding, sources told the Mail that there was no bad blood between Victoria and Mel but was simply a scheduling conflict. They said: 'Victoria has long standing plans out of the country and she simply can't be there. She adores Mel, they get on really well despite their paths going in opposite directions. It's a real shame. 'There is no issue between them, they haven't fallen out. It's just one of those things.' Geri and Mel though went to war after Mel B revealed that they had had an intimate relationship when the band was starting out while she was being interviewed for Piers Morgan's Life Stories programme. Geri was said to have been deeply upset by the bombshell revelation in 2019, for which Mel has apparently never apologised. Sources also say that Geri's husband Christian Horner was 'mortified' about Mel's claims. Though the other Spice Girls were absent, Emma was in attendance and looked gorgeous in a stylish pink dress as she stepped out to support Mel B. Emma was accompanied by husband Jade Jones and their son Beau, 17, with both men looking dapper for the big day. After heading out of the cathedral, Baby Spice kindly stopped and signed her autograph for an eager fan.
