Earth Day: A Milestone in the History of US Environmentalism
Earth Day was not an unexpected demonstration. It was the natural outgrowth of the mounting public awareness of the ecological crisis compellingly described by Rachel Carson in her seminal book Silent Spring. In line with Carson's argument, Earth Day emphasized that post-WWII obsession with chemical pesticides, industrial growth, and consumerism was straining the environment to breaking point, introducing many Americans to the idea of 'living lightly on the earth.'
On a positive note, Earth Day heralded the advent of environmentalism in the United States as a social movement. It was primarily a grassroots initiative in which even the mainstream conservation groups played little role in it. Considering the political ferment of the 1960s, it would not be something of an anachronism to frame Earth Day within the hippie counterculture movement sweeping American society. Mixing the rhetoric of moral suasion with the tactics of the anti-Vietnam War and civil rights movements, Hayes fashioned a strategy that simultaneously included and excluded militance.
What makes Earth Day and the ensuing environmental movement typical, however, in comparison with other contemporaneous social movements, is that a great deal of their ideology was premised on the unpolarizing notions of consensus and compromise, eschewing as much as they could inclinations towards radicalism and militance. In other words, instead of becoming oppositional in the manner of social activism of the decade, environmentalism became a point of healing in the context of bipartisan and generational conflict that was racking the United States. Environmental protection became the sort of issue on which a wide range of Americans, from the leaders of industry to politicians to laypeople, could agree. This assured Earth Day a wide reach.
Mainly due to the compromising nature of the environmental issue, Earth Day achieved rousing success, with more than 20 million people from all walks of life participating in what has been described as the largest, cleanest, most peaceful demonstration in American history. 'The key to the whole thing,' Nelson recalled, 'was the grassroots response.'
A central ramification of Earth Day and, to be fair, some other previous events, was the immediate incorporation of the environment into mainstream American politics. Almost overnight, environmentalism became the central issue of the nation. As late as 1968, the Brookings Institution did not list ecology among the issues believed to be addressed by the new Nixon administration. However, by 1970, pollution and the environment became issues of national gravity and proportion, propelling it to the top of the national political agenda. Nixon's Secretary of the Interior, John C. Whitaker, later recalled 'when President Nixon and his staff walked into the White House on January 20, 1969, we were totally unprepared for the tidal wave of public opinion in favor of cleaning up the environment that was about to engulf us.'
192 countries now celebrating
Interestingly, Earth Day has had a far-reaching impact on the international level, with at least 192 countries now celebrating this event on the same day. More recently, in 2009, the event was co-opted by the United Nations, which established an International Mother Earth Day through a resolution endorsed by more than fifty countries. The Kingdom of Bahrain, embodied in its Supreme Council for Environment, wholeheartedly embraces this initiative through the regular organization of lectures and events that aim at raising local people's consciousness about environmental sustainability.

Iranian Helicopter Confronts US Destroyer
Iran has claimed it confronted and warned a US Navy destroyer to alter its course as it neared Iranian territorial waters in the Gulf of Oman. Iranian state media released video and images from the encounter on Wednesday, which if accurate would be the first known direct confrontation between Iranian and American forces since the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in June. The footage was taken from a helicopter deployed by the IRGC Navy to intercept the vessel. Surprisingly, the Pentagon did acknowledge the encounter, and described the interaction as 'professional' while saying it had no effect on its the Iranian side described it as an act of aggression by the US military, with state television in Iran accusing the warship USS Fitzgerald of making a 'provocative' move by approaching waters in Iran's own backyard. The video shows a helicopter flying close to the warship, with an Iranian crew member issuing a radio warning in English, demanding that the ship change course as it neared Iran's territorial waters around 10am local time. Iranian media further characterized the event as a tense standoff. The US vessel responded by warning it would fire on the Iranian aircraft if it did not retreat, per the claims of Iranian officials, and the vessel eventually left the area following repeated Iranian warnings. Thus Tehran is saying its Navy chased the US destroyer out of Iranian territorial waters. US Central Command (CENTCOM) has roundly rejected Iran's version of events, instead describing in a statement the following: 'This had no effect on the USS Fitzgerald's mission, and any claims to the contrary are misinformation from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,' the official said of the exchange which occurred in international waters. Below: watch the standoff as featured in Iranian footage: IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News on Wednesday released footage it claimed showed an Iranian navy helicopter forcing the USS Fitzgerald, a US guided missile destroyer, to alter its course. The report said the warship had approached waters under Iran's supervision in the Sea of Oman. — Iran International English (@IranIntl_En) July 23, 2025 Iran's president just this week said his country will continue enrichment uranium for its peaceful nuclear energy program, and stands ready to take on any future potential Israeli or US attacks. President Trump meanwhile has said he's ready and willing to attack Iran again if it looks like the Islamic Republic is trying to reconstitute its 'destroyed' nuclear program. As for the possibility of resuming talks, according to the latest in Reuters : 'Iran is ready to resume nuclear talks with the United States as long as some principles are respected, deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on Thursday, a day before a meeting with European powers in Istanbul.' The statement continued: 'The Iranian diplomat said talks could resume as long as Tehran's rights under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty are recognized and Washington builds trust with Tehran and guarantees that negotiations will not lead to renewed military action against Iran.' Turkey Commits Military Support To 'New' Post-Assad Syria With Saudis Pledging $4BN In Investment
Turkey and Saudi Arabia have indicated this week they are preparing to ramp up their investment and military support to post-Assad Syria, which is under the new regime of President al-Sharaa and his Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (rebranded Syrian al-Qaeda). These very countries helped spearhead the effort alongside US intelligence to remove Assad – who fled the country on December 8. Turkey's Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that it will provide military assistance to Syria to help 'combat terrorism'. But the reality is that Turkey had long opened a 'jihadi highway' throughout years of the Syrian proxy war which helped cement the rise of ISIS and Syria becoming a hotbed of foreign fighters. Turkey claims Damascus is requesting urgent security assistance. 'In response to this request, we are continuing our efforts to offer training, consulting, and technical assistance to enhance Syria's defense capacity,' a Turkish defense official said. Ankara says its main objective is to uphold Syria's political unity and territorial integrity and to spearhead efforts toward long-lasting peace in the region. But the reality is that Turkey and Israel are in effect dividing of the spoils of post-Assad Syria, and Israel has been signaling its 'red line' over and against Turkish aims. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has recently pledged that Turkey's military will 'not allow terrorists to drag Syria back into chaos and instability.' Turkey has long occupied portions of northern Syria, precisely where terrorists have operated and conducted mass killings – particularly targeting Kurds and minority groups like Christians and Alawites. Regarding recent sectarian killings and unrest in Suwayda province and Israel's intensified strikes on Damascus, Turkish officials warned that these actions have exacerbated tensions between Druze groups and the Syrian government. But it is the HTS Syrian government which have committed the bulk of atrocities carried out against Druze civilians and even clerics. In the north, there's currently a deal underway for the Kurdish YPG – affiliated with the outlawed PKK – to lay down its arms, which it has been resistant to. At the same time there's a Pentagon presence in northern Syria and in the east, and the occupation shows no signs of withdrawing. Saudi Arabia too is eyeing greater participation in the supposedly 'new Syria' – now that Assad has exited: Saudi Arabia's investment minister led a business delegation travelling to Syria on Wednesday, where they were expected to sign deals worth around $4 billion as part of Riyadh's efforts to support the country's post-war recovery. The Gulf kingdom has been a crucial supporter of interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa's government, which came to power after toppling longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December and is now seeking to rebuild Syria after a 14-year civil war. Of course, this was largely the plan all along – for regional powers to 'divide and rule' Syria, after it was brought to its knees after years of proxy war and unprecedented US-led sanctions. Meanwhile the US promptly removed these posters… From a US and Israeli perspective, this was to break the so-called 'Iran/Shia axis' in the region which heavily supported Lebanese Hezbollah. The CIA dubbed this operation 'Timber Sycamore' – according to earlier confirmation in The New York Times and others.

Ex-President Barack Obama Facing Serious Criminal Charges
DNIGabbard said on Wednesday that she was referring former President Barack Obama for criminal charges to the Department of Justice (DOJ). 'We have referred and will continue to refer all these documents to the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate the criminal implications of this,' Gabbard said. 'The evidence that we have found and that we have released directly point to President Obama leading the manufacturing of this intelligence assessment,' she continued. 'There are multiple pieces of evidence and intelligence that confirm that fact.' Update (1007ET): And here it is – DNI Tulsi Gabbard on Wednesday released more damning evidence against the Obama administration, which she says exposes how they 'manufactured the January 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment that they knew was false, promoting the LIE that Vladimir Putin and the Russian government helped President Trump win the 2016 election.' 'In doing so, they conspired to subvert the will of the American people, working with their partners in the media to promote the lie, in order to undermine the legitimacy of President Trump, essentially enacting a years-long coup against him.' According to Gabbard, 'Here are the top Obama Russia Hoax lies debunked by today's release.' LIE: Putin and the Russian Government helped Trump win the 2016 electionTRUTH: President Obama, former Director of the CIA John Brennan, and others fabricated the Russia Hoax, suppressed intelligence showing Putin was preparing for a Clinton victory, manufactured findings from shoddy sources, disobeyed IC standards, and knowingly lied to the American people. LIE: The fabricated Steele Dossier was not used as a source in the Obama Administration's January 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment of the November 2016 electionTRUTH: Not only did CIA Director Brennan, FBI Director Comey, DNI Clapper and others include the Steele Dossier in the 2017 ICA, they overruled senior Intel officials who warned them it was fabricated and should not be used. LIE: The Obama Administration's January ICA was an independent Intelligence Community product, produced with apolitical Obama ordered the Intelligence Community to create an Intelligence Community Assessment they knew was false, promoting a contrived narrative, with the intent of undermining the legitimacy and power of a duly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump. Together, the @ODNIgov records released on Friday, the @TheJusticeDept's June 2018 report known as the 'Clinton annex' released earlier this week, and the @HouseIntel oversight report we released today confirm what many Americans have known: The Russia Hoax was a lie that was knowingly created by the Obama Administration to undermine the legitimacy and power of the duly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump * * * Barack Obama's team is in full damage control mode after Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard declassified and released evidence that Obama and his top officials in his administration knowingly fabricated intelligence to push the false narrative that Trump was compromised by Russia—an operation designed to delegitimize his election and kneecap his ability to govern. On Tuesday, Barack Obama released a statement through a spokesman in response to the recent release of Russiagate documents implicating the former president in the effort to delegitimize Trump's presidency. 'Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response,' the statement read. 'But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.' But, Gabbard isn't backing down. In an appearance on 'Rob Schmitt Tonight' on Newsmax Tuesday, she announced that her team will be releasing documents that directly contradict Barack Obama's latest attempt to rewrite the history of the Russia collusion hoax. 'We will be releasing further documents tomorrow that will refute that statement,' Gabbard said, dismissing the statement outright as part of pattern of misinformation pushed by top Democrats and their allies in the media ever since the release of what she called the 'manufactured intelligence document' in January 2017. She didn't stop there. 'We will be pulling a whole host of statements that were made by the Obama administration, by Hillary Clinton, by senior Democrat officials, by their friends in the media,' she said. 'They state over and over again after this January 2017 manufactured intelligence document was created that repeat the narrative.' Gabbard laid out a damning list of examples. 'The New York Times says, 'Russian hackers acted to aid Trump in the election,'' she quoted. 'Obama's CIA Director John Brennan says, 'There is strong consensus among us… to support the CIA claim Russian hackers aided Donald Trump's election.'' And of course, Hillary Clinton's infamous refrain: 'I would be president if not for the Russian hackers supporting Donald Trump.' 'There is a vast body of evidence and intelligence that debunks and refutes this statement you've just read and others coming from some of the Democrat leaders in Congress today,' Gabbard concluded. 🚨 BREAKING: DNI Tulsi Gabbard just said *TOMORROW* she is releasing more Trump-Russia 2016 Hoax Files that directly "REFUTE" Barack Hussein Obama's statement smokes, Tulsi came ready."We will be releasing further documents tomorrow that will REFUTE that… — Eric Daugherty (@EricLDaugh) July 22, 2025 With more documents expected to drop soon, Gabbard is making it clear she intends to expose the Obama-era narrative for what it was—an orchestrated political operation designed to undercut the legitimacy of a duly elected president. Now that the truth is starting to trickle out, the Obama crowd is sweating—and for good reason. Tulsi Gabbard's document drops are pulling back the curtain on what looks like a coordinated effort by Obama and his top brass to sabotage a duly elected president using fake intelligence and a complicit media echo chamber. The phony Russia narrative was a deliberate attempt to delegitimize Trump before he even took the oath. And now, the evidence is catching up. No matter how hard Obama's lackeys try to spin it, accountability is coming. And they know it. The walls are closing in on Obama's deep state operatives—finally!
