Pizza Week 2025: Mario's Pizza in Owego

OWEGO, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – News 34 is excited to announce the return of Pizza Week.
34 alum and now special pizza correspondent Mike Tanzini is resuming his tour of local pizzerias.
First, Mike takes us out to Owego to learn about a familiar family recipe.
'It's just an ongoing tradition and a family-run business,' said Mario's Owner Jerry Pettinato.
A staple in Owego, Mario's Pizza has been in business for over 45 years. A lot can change in four and a half decades. But if you ask Jerry Pettinato, if something ain't broke, you don't fix it.
'It hasn't been tweaked, it has not been changed, it's been the same recipe,' said Pettinato.
Jerry knows a thing or two about the pizza business. His father and family managed an Italian restaurant in the Scranton area that's been in operation since the 1920s. Meanwhile, Jerry's father-in-law opened Mario's Pizza in the late 1970s. It wasn't long before Jerry jumped into the pizza biz to continue the family tradition.
'Between my wife being in the business, me being familiar with that, it seemed like a natural progression with me to get into this,' said Pettinato.
It's a full family effort as Jerry, Amanda, Vinny, and Gina all work together to make the signature Mario's pizza, which starts with dough made fresh each day using a blend of flour, water, sugar, salt, and a special yeast.
'Fresh yeast is extremely fragile. It can't sit for a long time, or it will lose its potency,' said Pettinato.
The dough will ferment for 24 to 36 hours, which enhances its flavor and makes it light, airy, and easy to work with.
'You go all the way around. Give it a little tug and pull. Let gravity stretch it out. Give it a little tug and a little turn. Unfortunately, it took me a little while to really get the technique. It's not about speed…oh there it goes. I jinxed myself here. Is this fixable? This is the magic of television. When this comes out, you probably won't be able to tell there was a hole in it,' said Pettinato.
Next, it's time to drop down the sauce.
'One scoop of sauce dead center – kind of like target practice here,' said Pettinato.
Mario's utilizes fresh California tomatoes.
'You want the best that you can possibly get. It's been the same brand of tomato for 45 years. That company is strict with their tolerances, and everything is perfect' said Pettinato.
Along with a special blend of Italian seasonings, which packs a punch of fresh flavor.
As with any loyal family business, Jerry isn't budging on revealing the family recipe.
'There are some traditional Italian seasonings. A little bit of TLC, a little bit of love, and we'll… just leave it at that,' said Pettinato.
Now, time for the 100% whole milk, full cream mozzarella cheese that's going to melt beautifully and blanket our pie. After spreading what I'd consider a perfect layer of cheese, I feel like it might be time for a promotion!
'I'm in charge. My first order of business is giving everyone a half day. Jim is going to stay and make pizza with me.'
After several minutes in the oven, we take it out, cut it up, and get ready to enjoy a meal as a family – the same meal that Mario's has been serving to customers, both young and old.
'They've been with us for generations. It's more than 45 years that we've been here. We're on second and third generations now coming up and seeing their kids and grandkids come in and have that same smile on their face when they take that first bite of pizza,' said Pettinato.
I want to thank everybody at Mario's for helping me be a part of the family and for creating their signature Mario's pizza. There are some places out there that say, 'When you're here, you're family.' I can tell you firsthand that when you're down at Mario's, you're part of La Famiglia.
Mario's is located at 51 Fox Street in Owego, which is the only location owned by the Pettinato family.

Before he broke through with 'American Graffiti,' before he became an instant legend with ' Star Wars,' George Lucas became the unsung hero of another American classic that changed cinema history: ' The Godfather.' Or so claims the director of that 1972 masterpiece, Francis Ford Coppola. 'Everyone turned 'The Godfather' down, all the wonderful directors of the time,' the 86-year-old filmmaker told an enthusiastic crowd at the Palace of Fine Arts. 'So they tried to hire me. Here was the logic: 'One, he's Italian-American, so if it gets a lot of flack, they'll blame him. Two, there's a script that wasn't very good, and he's become a successful screenwriter, so he'll rewrite the script. And three, he's young and has two kids and a pregnant wife, so we can just push him around and order him to do everything we want.' 'Well, I turned it down. I had a young apprentice, and we had come together to start a company (San Francisco-based American Zoetrope). His name was George Lucas. He said, 'We can't turn it down, we have no money, the sheriff is going to chain our door because we haven't made the taxes on the thing. You have to do it, we have no other alternatives.' I said, 'You're right George.'' Billed as 'An Evening with Francis Ford Coppola and 'Megalopolis' Screening,' the event in Coppola's adopted hometown on Friday, Aug. 1, finished off a six-city tour designed to create more awareness and discussion of his 2024 $120 million self-financed dream project that tanked at the box office. Coppola was certainly generous with his time. The event lasted nearly four hours, with a screening of the two-hour, 18-minute film followed by a 90-minute discussion with the filmmaker simply sitting in a chair pontificating on a wide range of issues while occasionally taking questions from the audience. Topics included anthropology, history, societal evolution, and the philosophy of human innovation and creativity. ' Megalopolis,' which likens the fall of Rome to the current state of American politics and culture, is informed by the development of human civilization over 300,000 years, noting that patriarchal societies began with the domestication of horses. So, not your typical film discussion. Still, the audience who paid prices ranging from $61-$205 and mostly filled the 1,000-seat venue were enthusiastic and attentive, giving the auteur standing ovations as he took the stage and as he left it. However, there was a small but steady stream of people who began leaving about 45 minutes in. One topic that hits close to home for Coppola is homelessness in San Francisco. The director noted that he founded a nonprofit, North Beach Citizens, in 2001 to help the unhoused find housing, food, and services because he felt the city wasn't doing enough. 'I used to walk to work and see these homeless people sleeping, and people would call them human garbage. What, are we crazy?' said Coppola, who added that the solution to most of society's problems has to be addressed first at the community level, inverting the top-down aspect of federal government. Coppola did, of course, give insights to his films, from the two 'Godfathers' to the San Francisco-shot, Watergate-era thriller ' The Conversation ' (1974); the troubled production of the Vietnam 'Apocalypse Now' (1979); and 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' (1992), his biggest non-'Godfather' box office hit.\ And, of course, 'Megalopolis.' Although he did not address various controversies about its production, including on-set inappropriate behavior (and no one asked about it, either), he believes it serves a warning about America and yet provides hope for the future. America will get out of its mess, Coppola said, as today's generation of children matures. 'Look at the world around us right now, wars all over the place, and the most horrible thing of all children being killed,' Coppola said. 'The kids being killed in Sudan or in the Middle East, someone was gonna find a cure for cancer or write the most gorgeous music ever been written or make a great film. So to me the children are precious. They are our future.' For now, Coppola refuses to release 'Megalopolis' digitally, content to tour with the movie for special one-off screenings. The film only made $14 million globally after its release in September. He did acknowledge there eventually will be a Blu-ray, and the man known for re-editing his past films teased the audience with an alternate cut of the film. 'Right now I'm working on 'Megalopolis Unbound,'' he said to laughter, and ended the night.

Not only was the late, great Jerry Garcia born on August 1, 1942 — but because his tragic death in 1995 took place on August 9, Deadheads have celebrated the iconic musician's birthday as the start of "Jerry Week" in the decades since. And this year's Jerry Week might be the most significant yet, as 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's start as one of the world's most beloved rock bands of all time. The legendary rock star's family marked the occasion on Instagram, sharing a photo of Garcia playing guitar onstage along with several sweet memories and exciting announcements for fans. "Happy Birthday, Jerry! Your presence is felt every single day," the caption read, continuing, "Our dad was a magical person whose light has only grown brighter with time. It's been fulfilling to see Jerry's life and music continue to inspire a new generation of fans; may they become freedom-loving artists in their own right." The post went on to remember Garcia as "everything San Francisco. From the tough street kid in the Excelsior, to the art school student in North Beach, to the freedom-loving Haight Street 'Captain Trips.' He was a lover of tech, science, and progressive ideas. This city was his home. Today, we are honored that San Francisco is naming a street after Jerry. We're proud that the city recognizes his contribution to the art and culture of this place he loved so much.⁠" Garcia's family also mentioned the annual free concert at Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park, adding, "and this weekend, remnants of the original band, which has become the most successful tribute band in history, will keep the flame lit, playing Jerry's music on the hallowed ground where thousands of heartbroken fans gathered 30 years ago for his memorial.⁠"⁠"May the wound be healed by dancing feet, astral travels, and lots of hugs!⁠ Keep calm and Jerry on!⁠" the post concluded. Fans in the comments were quick to share their love for Garcia, with one person writing, "No music touches my soul, heart, and being, the way Jerry and the Dead do. Thank you Jerry, thank you Dead Heads everywhere for sharing in this love and light!" "Jerry takes the edge off just enough to make life bearable," a second commenter admitted, with another adding, "Miss you every single day." "Happy Birthday Jerry! Feeling your presence in SF!" wrote someone else.
