Scientists at the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) have sequenced the genome of the goldlined seabream (Rhabdosargus sarba) — 'matti vaayan' in Tamil — in a step aimed at boosting its commercial aquaculture potential.
This marine fish, known for its premium white meat priced between `500 per kg and `600 per kg, is in high demand in domestic markets but is not yet commercially farmed.

'This fish is mostly captured from the wild. But we have now standardised the breeding protocols in hatchery conditions. The next step is to use this genomic data for selective breeding programmes, broodstock management, and in enhancing growth, reproduction, and metabolic efficiency,' says lead researcher M Shashi Shekhar, head of CIBA's aquatic animal health and environment division.
Though it takes nearly three years for the fish to mature in the wild, it can reach a marketable size of 500g within six to eight months in aquaculture systems.
ICAR-CIBA director Kuldeep K Lal says the genome sequencing would help researchers provide insights into the fish's growth, reproduction and metabolism.
The goldlined seabream, native to Indian coastal waters, is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific, from the Indian Ocean and South China Sea to Japan and Australia.

It is also a euryhaline species, which means it can adapt to varying salinities, making it ideal for brackishwater aquaculture.
'While the fish species has not yet entered the export market and is mainly consumed domestically, it has great aquaculture potential. The genome information helps us move closer to farming it commercially,' says Lal.
At present, the fish is harvested from the wild during its breeding season in Nov and Dec.
'We simulate the same salinity and environmental conditions in our hatchery. Once we get the larva, we design specific feeds that can be supplied to farmers,' says Shekhar.
The sequencing revealed about 26,900 protein-coding genes. 'Understanding the fish at the molecular level helps us improve traits like growth and disease resistance,' he says. The sequencing was done by isolating the DNA from a fish specimen and sequencing it using standard platforms.
CIBA has earlier sequenced the genomes of Penaeus indicus (Indian white shrimp), grey mullet, red snapper, and Karimeen (pearl spot).

Operational spacecraft cannot be restarted after they are decommissioned. Furthermore, the next generation of vital observations could be lost if missions in development are cancelled. 3) Because indiscriminate cuts to NASA's scientific and aeronautics research would deprive the American people of the special public benefit that NASA offers, the officials oppose their implementation. Fundamental space science, aviation, and environmental stewardship research are fundamentally governmental tasks that the private sector cannot and will not undertake. Additionally, NASA promotes national security by ensuring that the United States maintains its leadership in science and technology, and it generates economic activity that roughly triples the return on investment. 4) Because NASA's non-strategic staffing reductions will compromise the agency's primary mission, the officials oppose them. In the process of terminating, resigning, or retiring early thousands of NASA civil servants have taken with them highly specialised, irreplaceable knowledge that is essential to NASA's mission. 5) The officials oppose NASA's decision to stop participating in foreign missions because it would be betraying America's allies. The Artemis Accords have been ratified by 55 countries to date, and NASA's position as the global leader in space exploration is in jeopardy if we stop supporting missions with our longstanding partners at the European Space Agency (ESA), Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and others. 6) Because it hurts state and local economies nationwide, the officials oppose the cancellation of NASA funding and contracts for non-performance-related reasons. By eliminating competitive grant selection procedures, arbitrary contract and grant termination undermines private entrepreneurship and lowers the amount of private sector jobs related to the space economy. 7) Because it diminishes NASA's ability to innovate for the good of humanity, the officials oppose the termination of programs designed to train and support the agency's personnel. The agency's primary value of inclusion is squarely at odds with cuts to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessible programming that have already been put into place. The country's future space economy workforce would suffer a severe damage if the Office of STEM Engagement were abolished.

Released on July 25, Marvel Studios' latest superhero film grossed Rs 5.10 crore on its opening day, according to early estimates by Sacnilk. Despite facing tough competition from Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's romantic drama, Saiyaara, the superhero film opened to a promising start. First Steps is the third reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise, which brings in fresh faces to play Marvel's first family. Pedro Pascal features as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. Fans worldwide, including those in India, were excited to see the new take on the classic team. The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Overall Occupancy The film recorded an overall 55.53 per cent English Occupancy (IMAX 3D) on Friday. Evening and night screenings were the most packed. The night show in metro cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Kolkata recorded an occupancy between 60 and 89 per cent. Meanwhile, the Hindi-language shows had an overall occupancy rate of 17.07 per cent, whereas the Tamil shows saw an occupancy of 35.71 per cent, and the film witnessed 24.24 per cent Telugu occupancy. Although it is considered a slow start for a Marvel film in India, this was expected due to the ongoing market dip of popular studios. It is also facing tough competition from the Bollywood movie Saiyaara, which is currently dominating both the box office and social media. The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Plot And Cast Set in the 1960s, four astronauts from Earth-828, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm, and Johnny Storm, venture into outer space on a mission. During their stay, they gain superhuman abilities from cosmic rays. Upon their return, they form a team called the Fantastic Four. Together, they jump in to stop the planet-devouring cosmic being Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer. The superhero film directed by Matt Shakman is the first film in the MCU's Phase Six. Besides the four lead actors, it also features Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer, Paul Walter Hauser as Harvey Elder / Mole Man, Sarah Niles as Lynne Nichols, and Natasha Lyonne as Rachel Rozman. Why a hybrid AI-human approach is necessary to uphold research integrity

The scientific research ecosystem is expanding rapidly. According to a June 2023 article in WordsRated, over five million scholarly articles were published annually as of 2022. The number continues to rise driven by the global increase in research institutions and journals and, more critically, by the 'publish or perish' culture that compels researchers to produce and publish findings quickly. Publication pressure Rising misconduct at the institutional level is closely tied to shifting academic priorities. Many institutions now focus heavily on increasing publication output, citation counts, and rankings, often at the expense of quality and ethical standards. Studies show that publication pressure is a strong predictor of research misconduct. Early-career academics, in particular, may resort to unethical behaviour under institutional pressure for high output. This overemphasis on metrics can undermine meaningful scientific contributions and compromise the integrity of research. Traditional peer review, long regarded as the gold standard for quality control, is struggling to keep pace with the volume and sophistication of modern misconduct. Editorial staff and peer reviewers, often overburdened and under-resourced, may lack the tools or time to detect refined forms of fraud or manipulation. This challenge is compounded by the rise of paper mills or organisations that mass-produce fake research for profit. These groups exploit vulnerabilities in the publishing system, flooding journals with fabricated data, manipulated images, and illegitimate manuscripts. Generative AI adds further complexity. While AI can support legitimate research, it also enables the creation of highly sophisticated fake studies, making detection even more difficult. As a result, even top academic institutions are not immune to the growing wave of retractions and scandals. In this high-pressure academic environment, retractions are increasing at an alarming rate. In 2023, India recorded 2,737 retractions, the third-highest total globally after China and the U.S. When adjusted for publication volume, India also ranks among the top five countries by retraction rate, highlighting the scale of the problem. According to a November 2023 article in The Hindu, between 2020 and 2022, retractions in India increased 2.5 times compared to 2017–2019, driven by plagiarism, data fabrication, and fake peer review. In 2024, several Indian institutions came under scrutiny, resulting in multiple retractions. Hybrid system To detect fraud at scale, AI-powered tools are being adopted across the research ecosystem. These technologies can flag plagiarism, image manipulation, and potential paper-mill activity, providing real-time analysis that helps institutions catch compromised research early. AI's capacity to process vast datasets has significantly enhanced detection capabilities. However, AI cannot fully interpret context, nuance, or intent. Algorithms may flag false positives, miss subtle fraud, or struggle with complex scientific content. Hence, a hybrid approach, combining AI with human oversight, is emerging as the most effective solution. A hybrid system that blends AI with human judgement offers the best defence against research fraud. AI excels at scanning large volumes of data and flagging potential issues. However, the true value of this system is realised when AI-generated alerts are assessed by human experts. Humans bring critical thinking, contextual insight, and interpret complex or ambiguous cases. This partnership ensures that AI-generated warnings are carefully evaluated, reducing the risk of errors and adapting to new patterns of misconduct as they arise. Human reviewers also provide a safeguard against algorithmic bias, ensuring systems evolve with changing fraud tactics. This synergy between machine efficiency and human expertise builds a more resilient, adaptive framework for maintaining research integrity. It is critical for institutions and funding agencies to invest in ethics education and set clear guidelines for responsible research. Early-career researchers and Ph.D. students should receive training in transparency and accountability. Publishers, too, must invest in both advanced technologies and skilled editorial teams to ensure that only authentic research is published. As scientific publishing continues to grow, safeguarding research integrity requires greater vigilance and innovation. A hybrid AI-human approach allows institutions to address misconduct more effectively, overcoming the limitations of AI alone. Ultimately, the credibility of science depends on our shared commitment to transparency, authenticity, and ethical conduct at every stage of research.
