Wicked Director And Deadpool Writers Join Split Fiction Movie

Yahoo25-04-2025
A live-action movie adaptation of Split Fiction, EA and Hazelight's recently released hit co-op game, is moving forward according to new report claiming that the director of Wicked is set to helm the film. It's also reported that Sydney Sweeney will star in the adaptation that is being written by the team behind Deadpool & Wolverine.
On March 21, Variety first reported that there was a bidding war in Hollywood over the live-action movie rights to EA's Split Fiction. The game was a massive hit for EA, at one point reaching over 250,000 concurrent players on Steam and selling 2+ million copies in its first week. Split Fiction also received rave reviews from critics. Production company Story Kitchen is reportedly helping EA and Hazelight develop the film. And now we reportedly know who is directing, writing, and starring in the adaptation.
On Thursday, Variety reported that Sydney Sweeny (Euphoria) is set to star in the Split Fiction movie. It's unknown which of the two main characters—Zoe or Mio—she will play. The outlet also reported that the upcoming adaptation will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who previously directed Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked.
The outlet also claims that its sources say the movie's screenplay will be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the same duo behind last year's mega-blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. Sweeney is reportedly going to be an executive producer on the movie, too.
Story Kitchen has quickly become a big player in the video game adaptation business in Hollywood. The production company helped get the live-action Sonic movies off the ground, as well as the animated Tomb Raider series on Netflix. The company is also developing a Streets of Rage movie and a film based on It Takes Two, which was also developed by Hazelight and published by EA. However, that project (like so many other video game movies) seems to have stalled at Amazon, while Split Fiction is moving along extremely quickly.

Jurassic World Rebirth devours the competition at weekend box office

The summer tentpole films are rolling out, and as expected, Jurassic World Rebirth had a massive opening over the holiday weekend. The film opened to $91.5 million at the box office, more than three times the amount the runner-up, F1: The Movie, made the same weekend. It's also nearly double F1's opening (the racing film opened to $57 million the week before). Over the course of five days, Jurassic World Rebirth has racked up a respectable $147,304,630, more than F1 has made in its two weeks in theaters. Jurassic is the only debut on the box office charts, and it's off to a good start. However, its five-day total is comparable to what Lilo & Stitch made in its first weekend ($146,016,175; now sitting at the number seven spot, the film has grossed $972,720,147 worldwide and counting). However, Variety notes that Jurassic's numbers are down for the dino franchise. The initial reboot, 2015's Jurassic World, opened to $208 million; 2018's Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom opened to $148 million; and 2022's Jurassic World Dominion opened to $145 million. Those films also all had significantly higher five-day totals than Rebirth, though the downward trend for each suggests that people simply aren't as excited about the prospect of a Jurassic World anymore—perhaps the suspension of disbelief as to why people keep bringing their kids around raging dinosaurs has worn a bit thin. We'll see how Rebirth holds up when Superman flies into theaters this coming weekend. The other notable new entry on last weekend's domestic box office chart is the restored, remastered, and re-released This Is Spinal Tap, which sits at number 10 having made $931,737 in its re-opening weekend. The success has spurred some additional dates tacked on to the limited engagement, with new showtimes on July 7, 8, and 9. In a statement (via Deadline), Bleecker Street Distribution President Kyle Davies said, 'We are thrilled with these early results of our re-release of [Rob Reiner's] original This Is Spinal Tap. While showtimes were limited this weekend, and the initial engagement carries into Monday, we experienced sell-out shows across the country, demonstrating that interest in the world of Spinal Tap still 'goes to 11.' Glad fans and newcomers alike got a taste of these musical legends as we head into the release of Spinal Tap II later this year.' You can check out the full top 10, courtesy Box Office Mojo, below. American Eagle launches denim line with Sydney Sweeney to boost Gen Z appeal

American Eagle Outfitters AEO.N surged 10% on Thursday after unveiling a new denim campaign with Sydney Sweeney, as the apparel retailer bets on the "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus" actress to reconnect with Gen Z shoppers and boost sales. The company has partnered with Sweeney for its fall season denim collection that includes a limited-edition denim jacket as well as a "The Sydney Jean." The campaign, called "Sydney Sweeney Has Great (American Eagle) Jeans," is the company's latest effort to revive demand as it navigates muted consumer spending and higher potential costs due to tariffs. Retail industry profits: Tariffs have worried parents starting back-to-school shopping early The retail industry in the United States has been struggling to spur demand as consumers grappling with financial constraints cut back on non-essential buys, including apparel and accessories. In May, American Eagle, which primarily sources from China, pulled its annual forecasts due to tariff uncertainty. "(The campaign) is its bid to stand out more and make some noise. Denim is popular right now, so putting money behind marketing it makes sense for American Eagle," GlobalData managing director Neil Saunders said. The Sweeney partnership is not the first time a celebrity tie-up has helped drive shares of a company. In 2020, Crocs CROX.O shares jumped after singer Justin Bieber teased a collaboration with the shoe maker. American Eagle has previously teamed up with celebrities, including tennis player Coco Gauff and actress Jenna Ortega. "Well-known personalities are always an easier way to tell a story quickly. It is one of the reasons athlete endorsements work so well," BMO Capital Markets analyst Simeon Siegel said. Sweeney's campaign, which launched on Wednesday and is reportedly the company's most expensive campaign to date, will also run across the exosphere of Las Vegas's 3D display orb Sphere. American Eagle's stock was discussed on retail trader-focused social media forums including Stocktwits and Reddit, indicating interest among small-time traders who have driven up shares of retailer Kohl's KSS.N and other highly shorted names in recent days. Short interest in the company, whose shares were trading at $12 on Thursday, stood at 12.2% of public float, according to LSEG data.
