Trump signs order to raise national park fees for foreign visitors
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday calling for an increase in the entrance fees paid by visitors to U.S. national parks from other countries. The additional revenue generated by higher fees from foreign tourists will raise hundreds of millions of dollars for conservation and deferred maintenance projects to improve national parks, the White House said in a statement. The executive order directs the Interior Department, parent agency of the Park Service, to increase entrance fees paid by park visitors from abroad, but does not say by how much or when the rates would go into effect. It also directs the Park Service to ensure that U.S. residents receive priority access over foreign visitors in any of its permitting or reservation systems. Currently, U.S. citizens in effect pay more than foreign tourists to visit the nation's scenic natural wonders and historic landmarks because their admissions fees and a portion of their U.S. tax dollars support the cost of national parks, the statement said. The executive order comes as the Trump administration has proposed cutting more than $1 billion from the Park Service budget in fiscal 2026, which would represent a reduction of more than a third of the agency's budget from the prior year. The administration's cuts to the federal workforce have already aggravated a staff shortage in national parks across the country.

After you've had a long week at work, there is no better feeling than putting your toes in the sand and soaking up some vitamin sea! Many members of the animal kingdom feel the same way, especially the elephant herds that are being cared for by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. In a recent video that was shared on the organization's Instagram page, we were treated to a delightful train of happy young elephants running towards the beach with the excitement of teenagers during spring break! Every day the keepers take the young elephants out on excursions to explore the wilderness and to help them learn how to become independent elephants. The Kaluku herd has several of the youngest orphan members and on this special day, the group was treated to a special outing that led them to the beach. The sand was a bit packed down, so the keepers showed the group how to kick the sand to loosen it. Once the sand was loosened, it was much better suited for them to toss it onto their backs. Korbessa, Natibu, Mwinzi, and Toto were soaking up the sun and flinging sand like experts in no time. After a quick visit to the water, the beach adventure had to end, and the little pachyderms took off running back to the trail. Honestly, there is truly nothing cuter on the planet than innocent animals enjoying everyday life! Especially these previously orphaned elephants that have now become siblings and herd mates!Many fans agreed that watching his precious video of elephants running on the beach was the highlight of their day! Here are a few of the top comments: 'Their obvious excitement for this field trip is adorable. And thanks for another video of our dear little one bolting across the sand!' African air passengers taxed disproportionately: Report
Air travel passengers pay more in taxes to fly from Africa than counterparts departing from Europe or the Middle East, a report by the African Airlines Association showed. The average amount of taxes, charges, and fees for international departures from Africa is $68, twice the average for both Europe and the Middle East. Africa's air transport industry is not profitable, the airline group said, in part because of the high levels of taxes and charges that civil aviation authorities levy on airlines. 'Air transport is perceived as a luxury service across the continent,' the group said, a factor that leads governments, airports, and service providers to 'overcharge airlines even though many need help to survive.' It called for tax structures to be harmonized between countries to reduce excessive charges, and for authorities to seek out 'alternative funding methods for aviation infrastructure.'
