Kelsey Plum and the Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Indiana Fever for a second time in as many weeks, winning 89-87, on Saturday, July 5.
The Fever, who were playing without All-WNBA guard Caitlin Clark, had their win streak snapped after three games.
Indiana had a chance to take the lead and win the game at the buzzer, but Aliyah Boston came up short on her shot attempt. The Fever held a lead as large as eight points during the game.
The Sparks trailed at the end of each of the first two quarters but turned things around in the third quarter to take a 1-point lead going into the final period.
Four of the Sparks' five starters finished the game with double-digit points. Azura Stevens produced a double-double with a team-high 21 points and 12 rebounds in the Sparks' victory. Plum added 20 points, three assists and three rebounds. Forward Dearica Hamby added 18 points and Rickea Jackson had 15 points.
Boston finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Fever. Natasha Howard almost had a double-double after recording 21 points and nine rebounds.
The Fever will host the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday, July 9. The Sparks will host the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday, July 10.
Highlights: Sparks 89, Fever 87
3Q: Sparks 70, Fever 69
Azura Stevens had 17 points and six rebounds for the Sparks after three quarters of play. Dearica Hamby and Kelsey Plum each had 16 points.
Natasha Howard had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Fever. Aliyah Boston produced a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds before the final quarter of regulation.
Halftime: Fever 45, Sparks 42
Aliyah Boston shot 6-of-10 from the field while finishing the first half with 13 points, seven rebounds and a block. Natasha Howard added eight points and five rebounds for the Fever.
"We have to be a lot more disciplined on the defensive end," Boston said during a halftime interview on NBA TV. "They're getting some pretty clean looks. They've gotten some second-chance points. So we have to make sure we clean that up."
Kelsey Plum had a team-high 11 points for the Sparks. Azura Stevens had nine points and six rebounds in the first half but was limited to just two points in the second quarter.
1Q: Fever 23, Sparks 21
Aliyah Boston had seven points and five rebounds for Indiana in the opening period against Los Angeles. Kelsey Mitchell added eight points. Both women played all 10 minutes in the quarter.
Azura Stevens led the Sparks with seven points and four rebounds in eight minutes of play. Dearica Hamby added six points, two rebounds and two assists in 10 minutes.
Caitlin Clark ruled out with groin injury
Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark missed her fifth consecutive game due to a left groin injury on Saturday.
It's the 10th game that Clark has missed this season, including the Fever's 74-59 victory over the Minnesota Lynx in the Commissioner's Cup final on July 1.
The Fever have remained competitive without Clark, winning the last three games that followed a loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on June 26.
Clark has begun to work her way back by participating in drills and was spotted sitting on the bench during the game on Saturday.
Fever coach Stephanie White indicated that Clark would ideally be back in the lineup to play when she wouldn't need to be on a minutes restriction.
Fever starting lineup vs. Sparks
Guard Kelsey Mitchell, guard Aari McDonald, guard Lexie Hull, forward Natasha Howard and forward-center Aliyah Boston make up the starting lineup on Saturday.
Sparks starting lineup vs. Fever
Guard Julie Allemand, guard Kelsey Plum, forward Rickea Jackson, forward Dearica Hamby and forward-center Azura Stevens will start against the Fever tonight.

3 takeaways as the Chicago Cubs have fun hitting home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals in a big series win

When the Chicago Cubs' offense is on, it doesn't matter if the wind is howling in or blowing out at Wrigley Field. The Cubs hit a team-record eight home runs to score 11 against St. Louis on Friday with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field. On the flip side, with the wind blowing in on Sunday night the Cubs scored their first 10 runs against the Cardinals without the benefit of a home run before designated hitter Seiya Suzuki found the right-center seats. The 11-0 shutout victory came in front of a crowd of 40,319 that was pleased most of the night until podcaster Alex Cooper sang and was booed during the seventh-inning stretch. Suzuki has 25 home runs and 77 RBIs but was passed over for the All-Star Game as rosters were announced Sunday. He said he was not disappointed. 'As a DH, I know there are a lot of great DHs,' Suzuki said through an interpreter. 'Looking at how they are doing, it pushes me to do better.' There is a chance he could still make the team if someone drops out. 'I'm sorry, but my plans are full — just kidding,' he joked. Photos: Chicago Cubs shut out the St. Louis Cardinals 11-0 at Wrigley FieldThe Cubs (54-36) went 5-1 during the homestand. They have a four-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central and are 6 1/2 games in front of the Cardinals and eight ahead of the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs' high mark in the division was a 6 1/2-game lead on June 17-18 and it melted to a two-game advantage June 27-29. But now there is a little bit of breathing room. Here are three takeaways after the Cubs took two out of three from the Cardinals. Left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd was named to the National League All-Star team on Sunday afternoon, then went out and threw five shutout innings, allowing three hits with a walk and nine strikeouts against the Cardinals. It was a memorable day for him. 'It's definitely something super-special,' he said of the All-Star nod. 'It's an honor and something you dream about.' Boyd said he is a product of the people around him and named just about everyone on the roster when thanking people. Last year at this time, he was recovering from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery and had not yet thrown a major-league pitch in his rehab. 'I just have a ton of gratitude,' the 34-year-old said. 'I'm glad there is someone writing the script who writes a much better script than me.' Over the years, the Cubs have had some pretty popular first basemen, including Mark Grace and Anthony Rizzo. Michael Busch could join the club. He had a legendary performance with three home runs against the Cardinals on Friday and then became just the eighth player in team history to follow a three-home-run game with a home run the next game when he blasted one on Saturday. He recorded seven hits in seven plate appearances. That was the longest streak by a Cub since Rizzo did it in 2016. The streak stopped Sunday when he walked in the first inning. He was back at it in the third with a single to left. In all, he had nine hits in the three-game series against the rival Cardinals. A few weeks ago, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Busch had been doing a great job quietly. That should be changing. 'It's interesting in the nature of how he performs,' Counsell said. 'The big, exciting game makes everybody notice. Before, he hit a home run in a week he hit .280 with an on-base percentage of .380 and a .500 slug and it would be nicely spaced out. 'It's great. Maybe it will take a big game like that to put him on everybody's map. Busch's defense has been a plus as he learned a new position after playing second and third base with the Los Angeles Dodgers. 'We gave Michael some praise last year for being a good first baseman and he's still out there doing what got him to that point,' Counsell said. 'It's a fun part of that development, for sure. It's fun to see that from your players.' Jameson Taillion's spot in the rotation is still in flux, but Jordan Wicks is making a bid for it. The left-handed Wicks threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief on Sunday, allowing three hits and striking out two. Wicks was brought up Friday when the team placed Taillon on the injured list with a right calf strain. He came back to the parent club as red hot as he had a 1.65 ERA in his previous five starts at Triple-A Iowa. In April, he was in the Cubs' bullpen and gave up three earned runs in two innings and was demoted. Last year, Wicks was 2-4 with a 5.48 ERA in 11 appearances and 10 starts. In his rookie season in 2023, he was 4-1 with a 4.41 ERA in seven starts.

As the WNBA expands, Chicago Sky players are looking ahead to new CBA after rejecting the league's 1st offer

The WNBA is about to be bigger than ever. The league announced a major expansion last week, bringing in new teams in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Detroit — in addition to already announced teams in Toronto and Portland — over the next five seasons. For players such as Chicago Sky center and WNBPA secretary Elizabeth Williams, this growth is a sign of necessary change. The league is growing at a rapid pace. It's consistently breaking records for viewership, attendance and revenue. And as a result, the players union feels empowered to ask for more amid negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement. After rejecting the league's initial CBA proposal last week, the WNBPA is trying to make a point: Growth should be universal for the league and its players alike. 'The league is saying that we're growing, we're expanding, business is booming,' Williams said. 'That's a sign to us that some of the things that we're asking for are not unrealistic.' Expansion has been a primary goal of the WNBA for years. But initial responses to the three new teams around the league were mixed. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham drew particular ire after saying she didn't 'know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or (Cleveland)' for games. Sky forward Angel Reese and Williams voiced more enthusiasm for the incoming teams, noting the rich history of women's basketball in Detroit and Cleveland and the passionate sports fandom of Philadelphia. But their excitement for the league's growth was tempered by the reality of the ongoing CBA negotiations. 'Obviously (we're) super excited to continue to grow and more players can be in this league, because this league is great,' Reese said. 'There are a lot of great players out there that don't have an opportunity to play right now.' The expansion news came in the midst of bargaining as the league prepared to present its first offer. Phoenix Mercury player representative Satou Sabally described the initial offer as a 'slap in the face.' Williams used softer language but agreed the league's vision remains distant from player expectations. 'We still feel like they're not really hearing us clearly and fully in what we're asking for,' Williams said. First and foremost, players are advocating for a major hike to the salary cap. WNBA teams currently are allowed to spend slightly more than $1.5 million on their entire roster. (In contrast, the minimum salary for an NBA rookie contract is roughly $1.1 million.) A supermax contract in the WNBA is worth just under $250,000 per year. But it's not just about the money — players also are advocating for increased benefits and improved working conditions. That could include the expansion of rosters, currently capped at 12 players per team. Most players and coaches agree that one additional roster spot would prove beneficial to the health and development of the league, providing deeper rotations and better options for teams that lose players to season-ending injuries. Williams noted that expanding rosters to 15 players (the same number as an NBA roster) would present challenges because WNBA games are 40 minutes as opposed to 48 in the NBA. That could mean end-of-the-bench players on an expanded roster would see minimal playing time — if they got on the court at all. But Sky coach Tyler Marsh is one of many advocating heavily for increased rosters as a way of both preventing and adapting to injuries. 'It helps a lot with durability,' Marsh said. 'It's a long, tough, grueling season. (We) don't really have a true offseason for those that play overseas or those that play in other leagues. 'Being able to have another roster spot or two allows you to be able to rest some players at times, to get a little bit more for the long run out of your players, so you don't have that same wear and tear on their bodies.' The future is uncertain for both the league and its players. The current CBA expires Oct. 31, at which point the union will be on the clock to cement a new deal in time for the 2026 season. Training camps traditionally start in late April — this year they opened April 27 — which gives the parties almost six months to negotiate before nearing a potential work stoppage. Will a compromise be reached in that time? Or will the WNBA see its first lockout next spring? The upcoming months of negotiations will be pivotal for both the league's expansion and the landscape of professional women's basketball in the U.S.
