Organizers to house athletes on 'floating village' during 2026 Asian Games

Japan Times05-06-2025
Athletes at next year's Asian Games in Japan will stay on a "floating village" cruise ship and in converted shipping containers, an organizing official said, defending the cost-cutting move.
The plan will see 4,600 athletes and officials housed on the ship for the duration of the Asian Games, which are being held in Nagoya and the wider Aichi area from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4, 2026.
Organizers will lease a luxury cruise liner that will be docked at Nagoya's port.
A further 2,400 people will stay in temporary shelters made from shipping containers a short bus ride away, with the two locations accommodating about half of the 15,000 athletes and officials expected at the event.
The rest will be in other accommodation, including in Tokyo where the swimming competition will take place.
Local organizers were keen to avoid the cost of building a traditional athletes' village, but Asian Olympic chiefs warned that any alternative must make sure athletes can meet and mingle together.
Kazuhiro Yagi, vice-secretary general of the Aichi-Nagoya Games organizing committee, said that they had listened to athletes' opinions and wanted to "provide a service that satisfies them."
"The cruise ship and container houses are in different locations, but they are only about 10 minutes apart by shuttle bus," he said.
"I don't think it will be a problem at all with regards to being able to interact with other athletes.
"There is an aquarium and various other entertainment facilities in the area. I think they'll be able to take a break, relax and come together."
The 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, had about 12,000 athletes, making it the biggest Asian Games in history, with more competitors than the Olympics.
The Asian Games are back in Japan for the first time since being held in Hiroshima in 1994.
The country has held several major sports events since then, including the pandemic-delayed Olympics in 2021, soccer's World Cup in 2002 and the Rugby World Cup in 2019.
Yagi admits that there "still isn't enough awareness" that the Aichi-Nagoya Games are happening, and says more needs to be done to spread the word.
"I don't think there is anyone in Japan who hasn't heard of the Olympics or Paralympics, but my personal feeling is that maybe only half the population knows the Asian Games," he said.
"Young people weren't born when it was last held here 32 years ago, so I'd like them to find out that it's a great event."
The Asian Games feature an eclectic mix of events, with bridge, kabaddi and dragon boat racing rubbing shoulders with traditional Olympic sports such as athletics, swimming, gymnastics and soccer.
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games has added mixed martial arts to the program, and Yagi hopes its debut will showcase Asia's diverse martial arts traditions and attract new fans.
"We want to appeal to the needs of young people, so including new events is essential," he said.
"We want to include mixed martial arts so that we can get the younger generation interested in sport."
Esports was a huge hit in its full Asian Games debut in Hangzhou, with fans packing into the futuristic 4,500-seat arena to watch star gamers like South Korea's Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok.
Aichi-Nagoya will be the first time Japan has hosted an eSports competition on such a large scale, and Yagi thinks its benefits will be felt by more than just young people.
"Esports can help elderly people who don't get a chance to exercise much," he said.
"You use your fingers and make detailed movements, which I have heard is good for combating dementia.
"I think this is a good chance for people of a wide range of ages to find out more about esports."

Experiential tourism key to driving inbound spending in Japan

Amid signs of changes in spending behavior among foreign visitors, enhancing experience-based tourism and offering value-added accommodation services are key to further stimulating inbound consumption in Japan. The estimated number of foreign visitors to Japan hit a record high of 21,518,100 in January-June, topping the 20-million mark at the fastest pace ever. The results highlighted the popularity of Japan as a travel destination. However, the consumption patterns of these visitors have been shifting as their enthusiasm for purchasing luxury items appears to be waning. According to a preliminary report from the Japan Tourism Agency, consumption by foreign visitors to Japan in April-June rose 18.0% from a year earlier to ¥2.5 trillion, but the proportion of their shopping expenses decreased. Tax-free sales to inbound travelers at department stores in May dropped some 40% from a year before, posting a decline for the third straight month, reflecting sluggish sales of items including luxury-brand bags. On the other hand, the hotel industry continues to enjoy strong demand from foreign visitors. According to hotel operator Seibu Prince Hotels Worldwide, the proportion of foreign visitors to its overall guests grew some 1.1 times from a year earlier in April-May. "The number of people seeking experiences (unique to Japan) is increasing," an official of Seibu Prince Hotels said. For example, the Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu in the city of Kyoto, which is operated by Seibu Prince Hotels, holds an event featuring a traditional dance performance by maiko (young female entertainers). "The average daily rate for hotel rooms in metropolitan areas is expected to stay relatively high from early autumn," said Miwako Date, president of real estate developer Mori Trust, adding that accommodation demand will grow further. A survey conducted by the Japan National Tourism Organization showed that the share of foreign visitors spending ¥1 million or more per stay stood at 19.1% of the total, up about 5.1 percentage points from the 2019 level before the COVID-19 pandemic. Such foreign tourists tend to seek high value-added experiences, according to the Japan Association of Travel Agents. "Rather than simply buying things, (foreign visitors) are shifting their behavior to having experiences that are unique to Japan and buying additional related items if they are impressed," Yukari Matsumoto of Jalan Research Center said. The Japan Tourism Agency is also promoting adventure tourism, which allows people to experience nature and culture.

Bulls sign Japanese guard Yuki Kawamura

Japanese point guard Yuki Kawamura has signed a contract with the Chicago Bulls after a strong NBA Las Vegas Summer League performance, the team announced on Saturday. The 24-year-old, who made his NBA debut last season with Memphis, played five games for the Bulls team in Vegas and averaged 10.2 points, 6.2 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals a game. Kawamura delivered a team-best 31 assists, second-most by any Bulls Summer League player since at least 2013, according to the club, and was one of only three players to average at least six assists and two steals in Summer League play. Last season, Kawamura averaged 1.6 points and 0.9 assists over 22 games off the bench for Memphis, with a best showing of 12 points, five rebounds and five assists against Dallas on April 13. To make room on the roster, the Bulls released guard Jahmir Young. Before coming to the NBA, Kawamura played five seasons in the B. League, the first with the San-en NeoPhoenix and the rest for the Yokohama B-Corsairs with career averages of 16.7 points, 7.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds. Kawamura played for Japan in last year's Paris Olympics, where he ranked third overall with 20.3 points a game and shared third with 7.7 assists per contest — making him the only player at the Games to average 20 points and seven assists.
