First group of Malaysian haj pilgrims to arrive home on June 14

The Star12-06-2025
MAKKAH: The first group of 284 Malaysian pilgrims for the 1446H/2025M haj season is scheduled to return home from King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah, at 5.40am (local time) this Saturday (June 14).
They will depart on Malaysia Airlines flight MH8251 and are expected to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at about 8.10pm the same day.
Maktab Operations Director's Office manager Abdul Fattah Mohd Fasor said Tabung Haji (TH) and the airlines are implementing the City Check-In (CCI) system, which enables baggage check-in at pilgrims' accommodations, to ease the return process.
"The CCI process follows standard airport procedures, including restrictions on prohibited items and baggage weight limits. Malaysia Airlines is involved in today's session, while Saudi Airlines will participate in subsequent ones.
"A total of 47 CCI sessions are scheduled from today until June 24,' he told reporters after observing the process at the TH Makkah Headquarters in Abraj Al Janadriyah here.
Abdul Fattah added that each pilgrim will receive five litres of Zamzam water upon arrival in Malaysia. They are not permitted to bring their own, in line with Saudi regulations.
"Each pilgrim is allowed a baggage limit of 30kg as set by the airline. If the weight exceeds this, we encourage pilgrims, especially married couples, to repack jointly or use the available courier services,' he said.
A pilgrim from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, Nora'azidah Abd Rahman, 51, expressed satisfaction with the smooth CCI process carried out the day before.
"We didn't expect such excellent service, and we felt like VIPs. Having the check-in process done at our accommodation made it much easier. My husband and I only needed to bring two bags under 30 kg each onto the plane,' she said.
The final group of Malaysian haj pilgrims is scheduled to depart from Madinah at 10.40am (local time) on July 10 and arrive at KLIA at 12.35am on July 11. – Bernama

#NSTviral: Late-night shop run turns into 'night safari' for family [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: A quick trip to the convenience store turned into an unexpected "night safari" for a family who encountered three animals within just five minutes along the same stretch of road. A 1-minute and 22-second clip, shared by TikTok user @nurulshaharis, shows the family's encounters during their night drive—and has since gone viral. Their first sighting was a pig crossing the road. A minute later, they spotted a cat sitting still in the middle of the road, which was soon picked up by a man waiting nearby. Then came the biggest surprise: a long, thick snake slithering across the road. "After countless cries of 'Oh my God', Alhamdulillah we got home in one piece," she wrote in the caption. The video has racked up over 100,000 views, with amused netizens flooding the comments and dubbing it a true "Malaysian night safari." User @biddiboopbeep said: "Please share the location. I'd like to go while it's still free—might get charged later since it's basically a night safari." Another user @booo commented: "Thank you for taking us along on your night safari. We really enjoyed the trip." Meanwhile, @meowz asked: "Do you live in Australia or something? There were so many animals." User @ash added: "If you spotted a tiger, that would've completed the night safari."

Malaysia-Thailand boat race to boost border economy

PASIR MAS: The plan to hold a boat race competition between Malaysia and Thailand along Sungai Golok could breathe new life into a shared cultural tradition while boosting the local economy. Kelantan Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Kamaruddin Md Nor said the event would create opportunities for small businesses, homestay operators, and tourism service providers in Pasir Mas and nearby border areas. 'We feel that events like this can revive the local economy because travellers will come not just to watch the boat race, but also to sample the traditional food, stay in local hotels or homestays and purchase handicrafts,' he told reporters during a trial race at Sungai Golok. The proposed venue, Pohon Jambu base, is already a popular gathering spot for Malaysian and Thai communities. Kamaruddin noted that its strategic location would directly benefit nearby economic activities. 'This place is beautiful and suitable for such an event because the river is not too wide and already has basic facilities. We also receive good cooperation from the Sungai Golok authorities,' he said. Discussions are underway to expand the event by including more teams from Kelantan and Thailand's Narathiwat province, potentially making it an annual affair. A unique blindfolded boat race is also being considered to attract more visitors. The recent two-day trial race featured 40 teams, including five from Malaysia, drawing around 1,000 spectators. Such events not only preserve cultural heritage but also play a key role in revitalising the border economy, heavily reliant on tourism. - Bernama

Malaysia-Thailand Border Area Boat Race Can Spur local Economy

PASIR MAS, July 20 (Bernama) -- The proposal to organise a boat race competition between Malaysia and Thailand at Sungai Golok is not only expected to revive a traditional sport shared by both countries, but also serve as a catalyst for economic and tourism growth in the border area. Kelantan Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Kamaruddin Md Nor said the initiative has the potential to provide benefits to small traders, homestay operators and tourism services providers around Pasir Mas and areas bordering Sungai Golok. "We feel that events like this can revive the local economy because travellers will come not just to watch the boat race, but also to sample the traditional food, stay in local hotels or homestays and purchase handicrafts,' he told reporters while attending the trial boat race at Sungai Golok (Malaysian side) here today. He added that the proposed location (for the boat race) - the Pohon Jambu base - is already known as a focal point for Malaysian and Thai communities, and its selection is expected to have a direct impact on the economic activities of nearby residents. "This place is beautiful and suitable for such an event because the river is not too wide and already has basic facilities. We also receive good cooperation from the Sungai Golok authorities,' he said. He added that discussions would be held to organise it on a larger scale by involving more teams from Kelantan and Thailand's Narathiwat province, so that it can be turned into an annual affair. Besides the main competition, a unique event being planned is a blindfolded boat race, which could add value and attract more visitors from both countries. This year's trial race, held over two days on July 19 and 20, features 40 teams, including five from Malaysia, attracting an estimated 1,000 spectators. Such events not only help preserve cultural heritage, but also play a significant role in revitalising the local economy, which relies heavily on tourism activities in the border area.
