RDA blames ex-officers for Rs1.94b scam
The authority has formally referred the matter to the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for action and recovery of losses.
According to an official statement issued by the RDA Director-General, Kinza Murtaza, serious irregularities have been identified in the financial records of the authority, causing substantial loss to the public exchequer.
The individuals allegedly involved include the retired Director of Admin and Finance, the late former DD of Finance, and the retired AD of Finance.
The DG emphasised that recovering the financial losses resulting from this corruption is imperative. She noted that legal recovery of the amounts due is possible within the framework of the law, including through attachment and confiscation of properties and assets.
Citing relevant legal provisions, she referenced section C-33 of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 for recovery of embezzled funds, sections 12 and 15 of the NAB Ordinance for freezing and confiscating assets, section 50 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 (CPC) for recovery of civil liabilities from the estate of a deceased person, and Order XXII Rule 4 of the CPC to initiate legal proceedings against legal heirs after the death of an accused.
Murtaza has formally written to the NAB Rawalpindi, FIA, and ACE Rawalpindi, urging swift recovery of the embezzled amount.
Talking to The Express Tribune, sources revealed that senior officials, who served as DGs or Directors of Admin and Finance in the RDA over the past nine years, and who held signatory authority over financial matters, might also face action from NAB, FIA, and the ACE for failing to ensure transparency.
Meanwhile, the official residence of the late DD Finance was sealed in Civil Lines in the nine-year-old mega corruption scandal in the Authority. Despite 236 suspicious transactions involving the RDA's National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) account, transfers were made to eight companies and 12 individuals and the RDA's financial discipline remained silent, the sources added.
It is still to be determined which officials received vehicles in exchange for an Rs110m payment made to a car showroom.
Separate payments of Rs175.7 million, Rs339.44m, Rs161.412m, Rs264.45m, Rs393.16m, and Rs74,25m were paid to several companies and individuals.
Meanwhile, a probe committee appointed by the RDA DG says it is not currently in a position to identify the primary culprit behind the fraud.

"The Nicop of one [of the brothers] is missing and the other can't find his card so they've submitted two applications: one to issue their Nicop, which is valid for the next six to seven years and they have also applied for the visa which can be issued within an hour."

Postmaster sentenced for corruption
The Special Judge Central Rawalpindi, Abdul Rehman Muhammad Arif, has sentenced postmaster Hamid Jaleel of Pakistan Post to 29 years in prison with hard labour and a fine of Rs20.1 million after finding him guilty of embezzlement. The convict will also pay Rs21.5 million in compensation to Pakistan Post. The case was registered in 2022, and the trial has since been ongoing. Jaleel was found guilty of making bogus entries worth Rs25.2 million in pension savings books. Assistant Director Legal FIA, Muhammad Afzal, and Sub-Inspector Shehzad Sarwar stated in court that all evidence and documents were presented, leading to the harsh sentence. Jaleel was taken into custody from the courtroom and sent to Adiala Jail.

Rupee continues rally amid crackdown
Listen to article The Pakistani rupee continued to strengthen against the US dollar on Wednesday, appreciating by 0.04% in the inter-bank market. By the end of trading, the rupee closed at 282.95, marking a rise of 10 paisa from the previous day's close at 283.05. The local currency has benefited from a government crackdown on illegal dollar trading, which has bolstered its value. However, traders report that black market activity has quickly adapted, shifting to digital platforms and discreet home delivery services. Since July 22, numerous unauthorised exchange outlets have been closed after the military intelligence agency summoned currency dealers to address the rising dollar rate in the open market. The move was followed by enforcement actions, led by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), tasked with combating financial crimes and smuggling. The rupee showed a notable strength against the US dollar in recent trading sessions as it gained Rs2.02 over the past six days, according to data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and AKD Research. Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan marginally increased on Wednesday despite a decline in the international market as strong US economic data tampered expectations of imminent interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. According to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association, the price of gold per tola rose by Rs300 to settle at Rs355,000. Meanwhile, the rate for 10 grams of gold stood at Rs304,355, down by Rs257. In contrast, global gold prices slipped as robust US data reinforced the likelihood that the Fed would keep interest rates steady in its policy meeting and possibly delay any cuts for the remainder of the year. On Tuesday, domestic gold prices had dropped by Rs1,600 per tola to Rs354,700. Globally, spot gold was down 0.6% at $3,306.57 per ounce, as of 1334 GMT. US gold futures fell 0.6% to $3,303.40, according to Reuters. Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar said gold was trading at $3,290 per ounce, after hitting a high of $3,334 and low of $3,288 earlier in the day. "Gold has come down," Agar noted, adding that the direction of prices will likely depend on the US Federal Reserve's policy statement, which is scheduled for release around midnight. "If the announcement favours gold, we could see a rally. However, if the outcome is not supportive, prices may fall further, possibly to $3,260 or $3,250," he said.
