U.S. users can now get 1% back in Bitcoin and deposit paychecks directly into crypto through the CL Card, powered by Ledger and Baanx.
Baanx, a crypto payments platform, has officially launched its Crypto Life (CL) Visa Card in the U.S., in partnership with Ledger, the leading provider of digital asset security solutions.
The card offers 1% cashback in Bitcoin (BTC) or USDC on every purchase and allows users to directly deposit their paychecks into the card account—bridging traditional income with everyday crypto use.
'At Baanx, we believe the future of finance is built on freedom, flexibility, and security,' said Simon Jones, Chief Commercial Officer of Baanx. 'The CL Card, designed for Ledger, is a step toward mainstream, non-custodial crypto payments—right in your pocket. This launch in the U.S. is a major milestone for our mission to put users in control.'
Users can top up the card at their discretion, convert income into crypto automatically, or hold it in fiat. The card is non-custodial, meaning users retain full control over their funds.
The launch follows Baanx's April 30 announcement and comes at a time when household purchases dominate crypto card usage, making up 63% of total transactions. Discretionary categories like entertainment and fashion are also seeing increased adoption—an area the CL Card aims to tap into.
Ledger's EVP of Consumer Services, Jean-Francois Rochet, said the product reflects the company's broader mission.
'We are excited to collaborate with Baanx to bring the CL Card to millions of users in the U.S., with great features for Bitcoin holders. As digital asset adoption accelerates, our goal is to ensure people can make the most out of their digital wealth anywhere, anytime in their lives.'
'Living the crypto life means having ownership, access, and real-world utility over your digital assets. We see the CL card as a tool for financial independence and a fuller asset ownership experience,' Rochet added.
'With 1% Bitcoin cashback and direct paycheck deposits, this is a huge moment for U.S. residents to securely spend and earn on their Bitcoin, with zero compromise on self-custody, enabled by the secure CL Card, powered by our partner Baanx," said Ariel Wengroff, Ledger's EVP of Communications and Marketing.
The card will be available in the U.S. (excluding New York and Vermont) starting June 30, 2025. U.S. residents can sign up for early access and notifications.
With crypto ownership in the U.S. reaching 28% and growing interest from institutional investors, Baanx and Ledger are positioning the CL Card as a practical gateway for people seeking real-world utility from their digital assets.

Why ethereum is suddenly beating bitcoin

The world's most popular crypto is being outdone by its second closest competitor in recent weeks. Ethereum is up about 54% over the last month, ahead of bitcoin's 10% gain. Here's what's behind the rally in the world's second-largest cryptocurrency. The world's most popular cryptocurrency is being outdone by its closest competitor in the last few weeks. Ethereum's price is up 54% over the last month, compared to bitcoin's 10% increase. Zack Shapiro, an attorney at the Bitcoin Policy Institute, told BI there were a handful of reasons ethereum has pulled ahead in recent weeks. "I think a lot of it is that it's a speculation trade," he said of ethereum's latest rally. "Long term, we have to see." Here are some of the things Shapiro thinks are driving the fervor for ethereum. Bullish for stablecoins Markets are enthusiastic about stablecoins after the passing of the GENIUS Act, the Senate's landmark bill that sets the terms surrounding stablecoin regulation and opens the door for more issuers to mint their own fiat-backed tokens. Tether, USD Coin, Binance USD, and other top stablecoins on the crypto market are issued on the Ethereum network. "People think that stablecoins might proliferate a lot more. Maybe some of those stablecoins will be on ethereum," Shapiro said of the market's psychology. Retail giants like Walmart and Amazon are reportedly considering their own stablecoins, and using the tokens for retail payments would be a "big breakthrough" for the market, according to Apollo chief economist Torsten Sløk. Support from ETFs Shapiro says institutional investors have also recently offered ethereum ETFs, another factor driving inflows into the token. BlackRock, Fidelity, and Grayscale are among the firms that now offer a spot ethereum ETF. BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust ETF is up 48.9% over the last month. Fidelity's Ethereum Fund is up 33.1%, while Grayscale's Ethereum Mini Trust ETF is up 49.2% over that time frame. Cumulative spot ethereum ETF volumes rose to $123.5 billion as of Wednesday, according to data compiled by The Block. Corporate buyers Corporate crypto treasuries have also proliferated in 2025, and recently, many have been scooping up ethereum. Bitmine Immersion, one such crypto treasury, said last week it raised its ethereum holdings to over $2 billion. The Ether Machine, another crypto treasury firm, said on Wednesday that its total ethereum holdings had climbed to $56.9 million. "Those vehicles are out there buying ethereum. And so that could also be additional buy-pressure that's moving up the price," Shapiro said. Shapiro isn't certain that the momentum will last for ethereum. He believes much of the hype for the coin in recent weeks has to do with excitement and uncertainty over ethereum's potential catalysts. The crypto's rally could lose steam once more regulatory details are solidified, he said. He pointed in particular to the CLARITY Act, the crypto market structure bill that's awaiting approval in Congress. "Is the market structure bill going to pass? Are these sort of crypto primitives going to find product market fit in the market? And then is Ethereum, as opposed to other blockchain systems, going to be the winner from that?" Shapiro said. "I would personally probably sell the news." Strategy stock falls despite raking in $10bn amid corporate treasury craze

Strategy's stock fell 1.4% in after-hours trading despite the company announcing a $10 billion profit in the second quarter. Its total market capitalisation now stands at just under $113 billion, and shares of the company are up 34% this year. The 11-figure profit comes on the heels of a near $6 billion loss in the first quarter of 2025, mounting pressure from circling short-sellers, and growing competition from other firms jumping on the latest crypto craze: corporate treasuries. These are firms that accumulate Bitcoin — and more recently altcoins — to beef up their balance sheets, sometimes with no other business model in mind. Those firms pose a significant threat to Strategy, which has seemingly foregone its commercial interests as a business software enterprise in favour of its endeavours as a Bitcoin treasury. 'Strategy's results will be primarily on their Bitcoin strategy, as the legacy software business has been significantly outgrown by the treasury strategy and has little overall relevance,' Alexandre Schmidt, analyst at CoinShares, told DL News. One example is Metaplanet, a former hotel budget operator-turned-Bitcoin treasury company that hails from Japan. The firm sold off the majority of its property and used the proceeds to buy Bitcoin in bulk. Now, Metaplanet sits in seventh place globally for most Bitcoin held by a corporation. The trend, initiated by Strategy's executive chairman Michael Saylor back in August 2020, has now spilled into other cryptocurrencies. Ethereum treasury companies are cropping up, as are firms adding XRP to their balance sheets. Even Binance's BNB is now held as a so-called strategic asset. Strategy now holds more than 3% of Bitcoin's total supply. That amounts to 628,791 Bitcoin, worth about $74 billion. That staggering figure isn't enough for Saylor, however. The firm plans on raising another $4.2 billion to buy more Bitcoin by way of their newly unveiled STRC offering. Saylor's strategy has spurred an entire industry of copycats looking to mirror the scheme — and the effect it's had on the stock price. Funding models So how does Strategy fund its relentless Bitcoin buys? First, convertible debt. The idea is simple: borrow now, buy Bitcoin, and let the rising value of both Bitcoin and the company's shares do the rest. If the stock keeps climbing, the debt converts to equity — and the company never has to pay it back in cash. Second, preferred shares. These are designed to attract yield-hungry investors without diluting existing shareholders too much. Preferreds typically pay a fixed dividend and sit above common shares in the capital stack, giving investors a cushion if things go sideways. Critics, such as legendary short-seller Jim Chanos, have called them 'complete financial gibberish.' Lastly, Strategy deploys at-the-market equity facilities, also known as ATMs. These allow Saylor to drip-feed small amounts of stock directly into the market, mostly when the price looks strong. Still, the model isn't without risk. Coinbase analysts have said the model presents systemic risk to the cryptocurrency market, while macro analyst Noelle Acheson dubbed it an 'alarming' trend.
