A's have officially arrived. What will it take to permanently bring MLB to Sacramento?
Monday's home opener for the A's
was the first time they played on
West Sacramento
soil.
From first pitch, and for the next three years, this is a trial run for the Sacramento region before
the A's
move to Las Vegas.
But the region is already buzzing with speculation: Can we prove our worth and convince the MLB to bring a permanent team to town?
"I think over the next three years or so, we do have the opportunity to show that a team belongs in Sacramento full time," said Mike Testa of Visit Sacramento.
For Testa, the momentum is there, but what will the MLB look for?
Sports economist Patrick Rische said that Sacramento's competition for a new team will be cities like Portland, Salt Lake City and Nashville.
"If you [fill stadiums] at the higher price point, it does send a pretty strong message to MLB that maybe there is more support in this market than they realize," Rische said.
Look at the Sacramento Kings and you'll find a faithful fan base plus deep pockets. Kings owner Vivek Ranadive also owns the Sacramento River Cats and
Sutter Health Park
. The River Cats are the San Francisco Giants' Triple-A affiliate and will share Sutter Health Park with the A's during their tenure in the city.
Ranadive has expressed early interest in owning an MLB team in the Sacramento region. What Rische argues Sacramento lacks is enough corporate sponsors.
"Unless they have someone like Vivek to come in and say, 'I want to put down the expansion fee and I'm willing to build the stadium,' then it just makes Sacramento less attractive," Rische said.
Testa said he believes the Sacramento Kings and their downtown home, the Golden 1 Center "have demonstrated there is a path to that."
"You've got a lot of corporate sponsorship in that building, whether it's people buying suites or buying lofts or advertising in the building," he added.
So this season, Sacramento has something to prove.
"You can't look at Sacramento and say we are not doing big things. We are doing big things," Testa said. "I think the exclamation point for that becomes the A's."
When it comes to other resume builders for the Sacramento region, right now, the city is
building a new minor league soccer stadium
in the nearby railyards.
It's hosting the
X Games for the next three summers
. Also, this summer is the release of
a major movie called "Sacramento."
Every fall, the city is home to
the largest hard rock festival on the west coast
, plus the biggest
Ironman race
in the country.
These are things that Testa and Visit Sacramento, when they marketi our region nationally, will bring up. The A's can be added to that list now.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Dodgers cruise past the White Sox
For the Chicago White Sox, it was not a question of if Shane Smith was the best pitcher they had to offer against the Dodgers — he was very likely their best. Among White Sox pitchers with 10 or more starts, the rookie right-hander had the best strikeout-per-nine inning rate (8.2), as well as the lowest earned-run average (3.38) entering the game. Smith had been respectably good on a young White Sox roster that has been anything but. Advertisement Yet, Smith couldn't make up the gulf in quality between the best-in-the-National-League Dodgers (54-32) and the worst-in-the-American-League White Sox (28-57). The Dodgers would make sure of that in quick fashion. A four-run, two-out rally in the first inning separated the teams quickly in a 6-1 victory to begin the six-game homestand. Whereas Smith was chased from the game in the fifth inning, Yoshinobu Yamamoto was excellent again. A week after being pulled after five innings in Denver — because of a lengthy rain delay — manager Dave Roberts called on the sure-to-be All-Star to pitch with an extended leash. White Sox first baseman Miguel Vargas — the former Dodgers top prospect who the franchise parted ways with at the 2024 trade deadline in exchange for Michael Kopech and Tommy Edman — represented the heart of the Chicago lineup, batting cleanup with his .229 batting average and 10 home runs entering the game. Vargas, who failed to bring the power in an 0-for-4 effort, received a 2024 World Series ring from Roberts and general manager Brandon Gomes during pregame batting practice. The 29-year-old, who received a cortisone shot in his knee, had yet to give up a run in eight scoreless appearances out of the bullpen. Yamamoto hurls seven strong innings and Ohtani hits 30th homer as the Dodgers beat the White Sox 6-1
Shohei Ohtani reached 30 homers for the fifth straight season, hitting a fourth-inning drive after fouling a pitch off the plate umpire, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-1 on Tuesday night. Ohtani fouled the ball off Alan Porter's right knee in the fourth. Ohtani checked on the umpire and stood by watching until Parker got up under his own power. The three-time MVP then hit a 408-foot shot to center, snapping an 0-for-6 skid and extending the lead to 6-1. Ohtani walked over and checked on Porter again during the seventh-inning stretch before leading off. Los Angeles scored its most runs this season in support of Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-6), staking the Japanese right-hander to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Dodgers won for the 13th time in 16 games and opened a season-high, eight-game NL West lead. Every run in the game was scored with two outs. SEATTLE (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a pivotal two-run double in the fifth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3 on Tuesday night for just their second with in 10 games. Perez lofted a fly ball off Emerson Hancock (3-5) that center fielder Julio Rodríguez lost in the twilight sky and dropped for a two-run double. Rodríguez climbed the center-field wall, trying to rob a home run, but he misjudged the ball and it bounced to the wall as the Royals took a 5-1 lead. Ben Williamson hit an RBI double in the bottom half and scored on J.P. Crawford's single off Michael Lorenzen. Five relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings of one-hit relief. Lucas Erceg (3-2) entered with two on in the seventh and got a double-play grounder and a groundout, and Carlos Estévez pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save in 26 chances.
