
EXCLUSIVE NHS plot to fly hundreds of drones a week over Kensington Palace, Hyde Park and Oxford Circus branded 'crazy' by worried Londoners scared they might CRASH or cause disruption
The health service are looking to use the drones to deliver urgent blood samples between 12 hospitals across London after a six-month trial period at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals.
The proposals could see the aircraft range as far as Wimbledon in the city's south west, to Chadwell Heath in the east, with the aim of cutting costs and reducing delays in delivering the vital samples by beating busy road congestion.
Apian, the logistics company who would deploy the drones and oversee the flights, say they have provided more than 6,000 urgent supplies since their trial period started last November.
The company's website says this has shown 'the capability to make faster, more reliable and more sustainable deliveries than traditional land-based modes of transport'.
They add that their trialled deliveries to the rooftops of Guy's and St Thomas' would have taken more than 30 minutes by road, but that they have been able to deliver them in just two minutes by drone.
But as the NHS look to expand the services across the city, locals in some of the affected areas are divided at the prospect of having the drones buzz in the overhead airspace.
While some praised it as a 'clever idea', others claimed it could potentially cause harmful accidents.
Natasha McCluney, 59, who works as a courier across Kensington, said: 'I really can't see that working. It all feels a bit too sci-fi to me.
'It doesn't feel like that's been trialled enough – and I can just imagine the drones crashing. I can't imagine the people living here would love things flying over their heads all day either.
'If it helps with the speed of those tests I'm all for progress – but blood samples feel like a really important thing to be transporting. So it makes me a bit nervous.'
Renee Dawkins, 23, who works near High Street Kensington, said 'it feels strange to not have something as important as blood samples in human hands'.
She added: 'That being said, if it's more efficient, it makes sense to go for it. And I can imagine it would be a good cost-cutting measure if you don't have to employ lots of drivers to transport samples.
'But I imagine it might be disruptive. Will they have cameras? Will they be flying over people's houses? That's a concern.'
The safety of drone blood transportation was tested last year when NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) used Apian aircrafts to send 10 blood packs from Northumbria Hospital to Alnwick Infirmary and back again.
Five were delivered by drone while the other five were by transported road, and the researchers concluded that using the aircraft did not influence the blood's quality or how long it lasted.
NHSBT Chief Medical Officer, Dr Gail Miflin, said the results were 'very promising' after the drone delivered the packs on the 42-mile journey in 61 minutes, while the vehicle on road took 68 minutes.

On top of the existing link between Guy's and St Thomas', the new plans would see drone pathways link Charing Cross Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital, if approved.
Queen Mary's Hospital, St George's Hospital and the Nelson Health Centre would also be linked south of the River Thames.
And a third zone in east London would link King George Hospital, Queen's Hospital and Barking Hospital.
This means the drones could fly over places like Kensington Palace, Hyde Park and Oxford Circus.
Kensington local Ben Vitalis, 26, said the strategy was a good way to 'modernise' health services and speed up transportation – but thought that issues such as the unpredictable British weather had been overlooked.
Mr Vitalis said: 'I'm surprised by this being part of the flight path as it is a relatively residential area.
'I appreciate that the strategy could help modernise things and improve the running of services – especially in terms of beating congestion when it's vans and cars transporting samples.
'But I also foresee a lot of potential problems. Who will be in charge of the drones? How skilled are these drivers?
'And what about the weather? Will the drones manage in the rain or the fog? What about visibility? British weather isn't known for being the most reliable.'
Apian's website says the drones can fly in bad weather 'up to a point', adding that they have been used for deliveries in the mixed climates such as Australia, Finland and Ireland.
It adds: 'If the weather is so extreme that flights are not possible, the deliveries will be made via existing ground-transport options.'
Barry Gerber, 55, lives near Hyde Park and praised the idea, saying: 'I think that's a good idea. I have no problem with that. Especially if it's going to help people be treated quicker.
'As long as they're not flying too low I can't foresee them being that disruptive. And I imagine if they're transporting medical supplies, these drones will be larger, and so they'll be higher up.
'As long as drones aren't being used to spy on people – I have no issue.'
Apian say any cameras on the drones are used for the delivery of packages, not for taking any photographs.
They say: '[The drones are] equipped with low-resolution, black-and-white camera sensors used primarily to assist with navigation and to help ensure the safety and reliability of our operations.
'There is no live feed of images available to anyone - including the pilots overseeing flights.'
Virginia O'Connor, 70, who used to live in the UK but now lives in the US, was also positive about the plans on her visit back to London.
She said: 'I think that sounds like a really clever idea. London is so congested – so that will really help with speed of transport.
'It's an effective way to use that technology. I don't think they're doing anything like that in the States.'
Fereshteh Guillon, who lives across from Holland Park, feared any noise from the drones would be 'disruptive'.
She said: 'Already, when I'm sitting in my conservatory, it's really noisy - with planes flying over every few minutes. Now I'm going to have to deal with drones as well?

'I don't mind if it's going to help the hospitals - but they should have soundproof drones. Surely that's possible. It also depends on the time of day. If it's at night that will be very disruptive.'
Ms Guillon was also upset that locals who live along the flight paths had not been warned about the plans.
She said: 'Why were there no consultations for this? They didn't ask any of us in the neighbourhood. I didn't receive any letters. They should inform people of these plans before they go ahead with them.'
Apian told MailOnline that the plans are in 'early stages' and are being developed in co-ordination with the Civil Aviation Authority.
They also said there will be an opportunity for local stakeholders, including residents, councils and businesses to have their say.

'Safety is our top priority. Apian works with industry-leading drone operators who have safely completed millions of deliveries worldwide. Every flight is monitored by a qualified pilot and backed by multiple layers of redundancy. This approach is helping us transform healthcare delivery through autonomous logistics technology.'

NHS England announced their first trial of the delivery service in July 2022, where they tested Apian drone transportation of chemotherapy drugs.
These were flown from Portsmouth to a hospital on the Isle of Wight in 30 minutes, down from the four hours it normally takes by conventional transport.
Chief Executive of NHS England, Amanda Pritchard, announced the pilot as the health service marked its 74th birthday.
She said moving to drone technology would also be good for the environment by cutting carbon emissions from cars, ferries and planes.
Boots Pharmacy then followed suit, announcing that it would be the first community pharmacy in the UK to deliver prescription medicines by an Apian drone.
The pharmacy's first drone flew from the British Army's Baker Barracks on Thorney Island and arrived at St Mary's Hospital in Newport on the Isle of Wight on July 4, 2022.

Based on an eight-week experiment, researchers from the University College London have discovered that matching your exercise routine to your personality could make it more enjoyable and give you better results. The scientists measured strength levels, as well as the prominence of different personality traits during the study. They found that extroverts preferred high-intensity workouts, while people who tend to worry favored short bursts of activity and saw greater stress reduction from exercise. The scientists also pointed out that the most important part about exercising was doing something that brought joy to you. Study author Dr Flaminia Ronca from UCL Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health said: 'We found some clear links between personality traits and the type of exercise the participants enjoyed most, which I think is important because we could potentially use this knowledge to tailor physical activity recommendations to the individual – and hopefully help them to become and remain more active. 'Our brains are wired in different ways, which drives our behaviors and how we interact with our environment. 'So it's not surprising that personality would also influence how we respond to different intensities of exercise.' The American Heart Association recommends adults engage in moderate-intensity aerobic activity for about 150 minutes per week, including 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity or a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week. For this study, the team divided 86 volunteers with a range of fitness levels and backgrounds into two groups. The first group, consisting of 25 people, was provided with an eight-week home-based fitness plan made up of cycling and strength training. The other group of 51 people continued their usual lifestyle and were only asked to stretch twice a week. During the exercise program, all participants were also asked to rate their enjoyment of each exercise session. Variations in their strength before and after the experiment was also measured through push ups, the ability to hold a plank and jumping. This was followed by a low intensity cycling session for 30 minutes and then a cycling test to measure their oxygen capacity. Additionally, scientists also studied participants' personality traits, including sociability, diligence, agreeableness, openness and negative emotions such as fear of failure, anxiety and self doubt in each participant by asking them to answer a questionnaire. The team also assessed their perceived stress levels on a scale of one to 10. Results showed that those who scored high on diligence and openness were found to engage in exercise regardless of whether they enjoyed it or were driven by curiosity to try a new workout respectively. Participants who were found to be very diligent also tended to have a well-rounded fitness level - meaning they scored higher on aerobic fitness as well as core strength - and were generally more physically active. While those who showed more anxiety and self doubt preferred private workouts and needed short breaks in between their sessions. Notably, the study also showed that the stress levels in people who experienced negative emotions significantly decreased after they began working out on their own or in private sessions. Dr Ronca said: 'It's fantastic news, as it highlights that those who benefit the most from a reduction in stress respond very well to exercise.' Senior author Professor Paul Burgess from the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience explained: 'We found that people who scored more highly in the neuroticism personality trait showed a particularly strong reduction in stress when they undertook the fitness training recommended in the study. 'This suggests that there may be particular benefits in stress reduction for those with this trait.' Previous research shows that people with anxiety and stress may find private exercise particularly more enjoyable than working out in a group as it makes them feel less conscious and removes worry about being judged or compared to others. Those who showed more anxiety and self doubt preferred private workouts and needed short breaks in between their sessions This allows them to feel more in control and they are able to focus more on their personal needs and preferences - which in turn, leads to their stress levels to decrease. Additionally, people who were very social and outgoing enjoyed high intensity sessions with others around such as high intensity interval training (HIIT), team sports and intense cycling The researchers noted that all 86 participants ended the study noticeably stronger and fitter by the time after the eight weeks. Professor Burgess added: 'We hope that if people can find physical activities that they enjoy they will more readily choose to do them. 'After all, we don't have to nag dogs to go for a walk: being so physically inactive that we start to feel miserable might be a peculiarly human thing to do. In effect, our body punishes us by making us miserable. 'But for some reason, many of us humans seem poor at picking up on these messages it is sending to our brain.' The study was published in Frontiers in Psychology on July 7.

Peter Andre's wife Emily reveals she suffered rare complication while giving birth
Dr Emily Andre has opened up for the first time about the terrifying ordeal she faced after giving birth to her youngest daughter, Arabella. The NHS doctor, 35, who shares three children with husband Peter Andre -Millie, 11, Theo, eight, and 15-month-old Arabella- became visibly emotional as she recalled the experience during an appearance on Happy Mum Happy Baby, the podcast hosted by Giovanna Fletcher. Emily, who is also stepmother to Peter's older children Junior, 19, and Princess, 18, from his marriage to Katie Price, said the traumatic experience has 'cemented' their decision not to have any more children. 'I haven't really spoken about her birth and what happened afterwards because it was so hard and awful,' she said. 'It was tough. I was really unwell after she was born, there was quite a lot of complications.' Just a week after Arabella's birth, Emily was rushed back into hospital for emergency surgery, after developing a rare and potentially life-threatening type of hernia. 'Basically part of my bowels were kind of in the wrong place,' she explained. 'It was quite large, and the type of hernia it was can strangulate quite easily, which makes it an emergency.' 'All the consultants I've seen have said, 'We've never seen this in our whole career,' and then I think, 'For God's sake, why did it have to happen to me?'' Emily said she knew something wasn't right almost immediately after giving birth. 'I had a big, huge lump in my tummy sticking right out,' she said. A week later, a surgeon confirmed the seriousness of the situation. 'He looked and said, 'You need to come into hospital now.'' Shocked, she pleaded to go home to prepare and express milk, saying the thought of being separated from newborn Arabella was unbearable. 'I was breastfeeding, so I thought, 'My God, how am I going to feed her if I'm on the operating table?'' Despite being in severe pain, Emily said the worst part was handing Arabella over to her mum before surgery. 'I was a right mess, it was really hard.' In a bittersweet twist, she recalled one moment that brought a smile during the chaos: Learning that she was in the same operating theatre where Peter once had surgery performed by her father, a urologist. The couple met through Emily's father. 'The porter said, 'You know, I brought Pete here into this theatre. This was exactly where he lay and this is the room where he met your dad.' It was just such a nice moment and it took my mind off everything.' The recovery was slow and painful, involving extensive stitching and internal repairs. Emily spent several days in hospital but was thankful to recover on a midwife ward, which allowed Arabella to stay with her. 'That was all I was thinking about – 'Don't take my baby away from me.' I do find it really hard [to be away from her]. I've got quite good at the daytime, but there's something about the night and putting her to bed…' More Trending Now, more than a year on, Emily says she feels 'pretty much back to health' and praised Peter, her parents, and the medical staff who supported her through the ordeal. But she said she hasn't made a complete emotional recovery. Heartbreaking story of lonely hospital patient who nobody knows or wants
A man found unconscious on a California street been lying in a hospital bed for more than three weeks and no one knows who he is, where he came from, or whether anyone is even looking for him. The unidentified patient, believed to be in his mid-40s, was rushed to St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach on June 15. A chilling photo released by Dignity Health shows the man lying in a hospital bed, unconscious and hooked up to a breathing machine. He was found unresponsive near West Anaheim Street between Daisy and Pacific avenues. When he was found, he had no ID, no wallet, or documents. More than three weeks later, no friends, family, or acquaintances have come forward in connection to the patient. Not a single visitor has walked through the doors to ask about him. Hospital officials say the man is Hispanic and around 5ft 2in tall and weighs roughly 165 pounds. He has brown eyes, brown hair, and a brown and gray beard. The man does not have any tattoos or distinguishing marks that could help identify him. Officials have not revealed his medical condition due to privacy laws. It is unclear how critical his condition is at this time or if it is deteriorating as time goes on. The hospital is making a desperate appeal to the public to help identify the mystery man. Anyone who may recognize him or have any information is urged to call St. Mary Medical Center at 562-491-9381. There are thousands of unidentified patients who are admitted to US hospitals each year. Public hospitals like LA County+USC Medical Center can see up to 1,000 unidentified patients in a year. Last October, officials asked the public to help identify a seriously ill patient who was surviving on life support at a California hospital. Staff at the Riverside Community Hospital in the north of the suburb tried to put a name to the man who came through their doors on September 28, 2024. They have refused to say what is wrong with him or why he is attached to a ventilator, but have issued a photograph in the hope that someone can put a name to the face. 'Hospital Case Management and Social Worker teams have exhausted resources in attempting identification, including working with the Riverside Police Department,' managers said in a statement at the time. Dr. Chase Coffey, associate medical director of inpatient services at LA County, said such cases are common at the hospital, which is one of the largest in the country. However, he added that for a patient to remain at the hospital for five months without being identified is rare. He added that those patients are often either homeless, carrying false identification or may be undocumented. 'They could be trauma victims,' he explained.
