BREAKING: The WNBA announces expansion teams in these three cities
Starting in 2028, Cleveland will be the first city added to the league. The next year, in 2029, Detroit will follow suit. Finally, in 2030, Philadelphia will round out the expansion of the league.

The news follows the 2026 expansions of Portland and Toronto Tempo, with the Golden State Valkyries having debuted in 2025.
As for Detroit and Cleveland, this revives a yet-to-be-named teams for each of them, with Cleveland reviving the Rockers that started in 1997 and Detroit reviving the legacy the Shock founded in 1998.
'This is a huge win for Detroit and the WNBA,' Gores, who will be the controlling owner of the new franchise, said in a statement to the Detroit Free Press. 'Today marks the long-hoped-for return of the WNBA to a city with deep basketball roots and a championship tradition."

'The demand for women's basketball has never been higher, and we are thrilled to welcome Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia to the WNBA family,' WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert told AP News. 'This historic expansion is a powerful reflection of our league's extraordinary momentum, the depth of talent across the game, and the surging demand for investment in women's professional basketball.'
The investors for each group paid a $250 million expansion fee, and each of the teams are expected to invest more money in practice facilities and similar amenities.
The Detroit and Cleveland teams are expected to play in the NBA arenas that currently exist, while Philadelphia is hopeful their new planned building will be done by 2030.

In a comment to AP News, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment Managing Partner and co-founder, Josh Harris, said, "We tell tell the city it's going to open in 2031. We're hoping for 2030. So we're trying to underpromise and overdeliver."
Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia also outbid cities like St. Louis, Denver, and Nashville for spots in the league.
'We didn't know the demand would be where the demand ended up when we ran the process last fall into the winter,' Engelbert said. 'Given the very high demand and supply, we wanted to evaluate, too, because we're very careful about, you know, making sure we're balancing the number of roster spots, the number of teams. But one thing I'm very struck by as we get into a new media deal, as the media market evolves, you know, being in these three big basketball cities is going to help from a media perspective, a corporate partners perspective.'
With the proximity of the cities to each other, they're also expected to create a natural rivalry that will hopefully help keep fans on the edges of their seats.

The Dallas Wings have traded guard DiJonai Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx and have waived center Teaira McCowan, the organization announced early Sunday morning. Carrington, who was a starter for the Wings when the season began, has been coming off the bench as of late. She's appeared in 20 games this season, starting 13 of them and averaging 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals. The Wings acquired McCowan in 2022 from the Indiana Fever. She averaged double-figures and at least seven rebounds per game in six of her first seven seasons in the WNBA. The 6-7 center from Mississippi State has appeared in 17 games in 2025, averaging 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds. Like Carrington, McCowan was a former starter for Dallas, but was coming off the bench for most of the 2025 season. Will a team pick her up before the Aug. 7 deadline? Detroit Lions injury updates: Terrion Arnold, Taylor Decker, Dan Skipper, Kenny Yeboah
The Detroit Lions are heading back to the practice field on Sunday and head coach Dan Campbell offered some injury updates. On a positive note, left tackle Taylor Decker has been activated off the physically unable to perform list, which makes him eligible to practice. Decker had shoulder surgery during the offseason. As for fellow tackle Dan Skipper, who suffered an ankle sprain during the Hall of Fame Game against the Los Angeles Chargers, he's going to miss about a week. Cornerback Terrion Arnold had suffered a hamstring injury at practice last week. Campbell noted that Arnold is dealing with a low-grade hamstring strain and it's possible he'll be back by the middle of the week. "It's not a major hamstring, it's a low grade," Campbell said. Like Decker, tight end Kenny Yeboah was injured against the Chargers, but the Lions head coach said he avoided anything serious. Yeboah is expected to practice on Monday after taking Sunday off for a positive personal reason. Person arrested for throwing sex toy onto WNBA court, league says
A person has been arrested for throwing a sex toy onto the court of a WNBA game between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream earlier this week, the league announced Saturday via the San Francisco Chronicle's Marisa Ingemi. The incident was the first of two to hit the WNBA this week, with a second green toy landing at the court of another Valkyries road game against the Chicago Sky on Friday. Per the Chronicle, that toy was thrown by a person different from the one in Atlanta. In addition to criminal charges, the WNBA promised immediate ejection and a minimum one-year ban for anyone who throws an object onto the court. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans. … The subject involved in the incident in Atlanta on Tuesday has been arrested.' Security officials were reportedly spotted questioning fans at the 200 level of the Sky's Wintrust Arena on Friday, so the league or authorities could be in the process of identifying that fan as well. Video of both incidents have gone viral on social media, with even some WNBA players joking about the ridiculous situation. Others, however, have denounced the action as dangerous and demeaning, including Sky center Elizabeth Williams, per the Chicago Tribune: 'It's super disrespectful,' Sky center Elizabeth Williams said after the Valkyries' 73-66 victory. 'I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.' And Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini, per the Associated Press: "I mean, first of all, it was super dangerous," Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini said after Tuesday's game. "And then when we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing. I've never seen anything like that. I'm just glad we worked through that situation. We stayed locked in. We stayed concentrated." Others have spoken out on social media: Sex toys being thrown onto the field of play isn't completely unprecedented, but the circumstances were vastly different in the most notable example, where the Buffalo Bills fans have thrown them in games against the New England Patriots.
