
YouTube's new rules curb repetitive AI content. That won't eliminate the threat for creators
'We have lately seen a massive increase in the posting of pure AI-generated content, especially video. We have seen creators also use the same as a shortcut, although exact numbers vary widely depending on platform moderation policies," said Sunder Venkatraman, chief business officer at short video app Josh. 'AI can enhance creativity and streamline content production, but its proliferation risks overshadow original creator efforts, potentially diminishing their visibility and income."
The rise of AI introduces complexities in preserving creators' rights and ensuring fair rewards for original content, Venkatraman added. Key challenges include accurately identifying subtle forms of AI manipulation and preventing inadvertent promotion of duplicated content, he said.

There has been a massive increase in AI-generated content, especially video, in India. According to creators and industry executives, unchecked growth of AI-driven content could reduce earnings for original creators by about 15-20% due to diluted user engagement.
YouTube is cracking down on mass-produced or repetitive content, including AI-generated videos, especially those that may mimic trends without adding any original view or commentary. The updated monetization policy is meant to emphasise creators' originality and authenticity, even if they do use some AI tools. But the final product must reflect their own perspective and value.
Calling the YouTube move one of the first serious steps in tackling AI content produced at scale, Ayushi Rai, an entertainment creator, said a noticeable chunk, especially in voiceovers and podcast script-based reels, is now AI-generated or at least AI-assisted. 'The problem isn't just about volume; it's about speed and scale. AI can churn out 10 videos in the time it takes a human creator to make one. Which makes discovery harder, engagement drops, and that directly affects creator revenue."
Content creation, while often glamourized, is a deeply demanding profession. With AI-powered automation, it has become harder for human creators to break through the algorithm and gain the views and engagement they deserve, according to Dhananjay Bhosale, a tech creator.
'That in turn affects brand deals, which many of us rely on for income. Meta asks creators to declare if their content has used AI in any form. Twitter offers context labels or fact-checking, especially for controversial, political, or war-related content, flagging AI-generated media when possible to prevent its spread. However, most platforms still lack robust tools to reliably detect AI-generated content. Every day, new models emerge with even more realistic visuals and voices," Bhosale said.

A ShareChat spokesperson said, 'We are witnessing strong adoption of AI tools among our creators across both short videos and micro-dramas. Our sophisticated content moderation systems continue to ensure that this growing wave of AI-generated content aligns with our community standards."
While agreeing that a system of checks and balances is now beginning to come into place, Dipankar Mukherjee, co-founder of AI-powered StudioBlo said such content produced at scale does not simply lead to a loss of eyeballs, but also audience trust.
Some industry experts said the misuse of AI can go beyond just denting opportunities for original work.
These tools can help create misleading content, where creators can make false claims to have been in places or with people, for publicity, according to Rahul Regulapati, founder of Galleri5, a platform for AI-powered marketing solutions.
Umesh Bude, chief technology officer at Pocket Entertainment, said, 'We are at a transformative juncture in the content ecosystem, where AI-generated content is becoming increasingly prevalent across platforms. There's no doubt that AI is contributing to a surge in content volume, both audio and video. While this opens up exciting possibilities, it also brings into focus the importance of originality and creative integrity.
Bude said the primary challenge is distinguishing between purely synthetic media and human-led, AI-augmented creation. 'We believe that platforms that successfully champion the latter will not only foster the most vibrant creator communities but also become the most engaging for the end users."

From rugby balls to umbrellas, Decathlon to double down on sourcing from India
French sporting goods giant Decathlon plans to significantly ramp up sourcing from India, aiming to nearly double the country's share in its global production to 15 per cent by 2030, it said on Tuesday. The retailer, which operates over 130 stores across 55 Indian cities, also expects to spend $3 billion on sourcing from Indian suppliers over the next five years for both the domestic market and exports. Already, Indian suppliers account for a large share of Decathlon's global production in select products like rugby balls (60 per cent), umbrellas (35 per cent), and textiles (20 per cent). Overall, India's share stands at 8 per cent. By 2030, the French retailer expects 90 per cent of the quantities sold in India to be locally manufactured, up from 70 per cent today. As of now, nearly 99 per cent of Decathlon bicycles sold in India are locally made, followed by textiles (75 per cent), bags and accessories (65 per cent), and footwear (55 per cent). Decathlon set up its first production office in India 25 years ago in Chennai, starting with some leather products for horse riding. The company currently has seven production offices in India, through which it sources from 83 local suppliers, spending around $480 million annually. The suppliers manufacture goods based on Decathlon's technical specifications. Popular for its wide range of affordable offerings, Decathlon is increasingly focussing on high-end sporting gear as it looks to cater to the full spectrum of buyers. 'It's very important to understand that Decathlon is a multi-sport specialist and we accompany the beginner, the intermediate, and the pro,' Frederic Merlevede, its global production head, told The Indian Express. Merlevede added that Decathlon's top of the range products also tend to be '20-30 per cent less expensive than the competition'. In India, the products that move in large numbers include socks, 10-litre backpacks, skipping ropes, bottles, caps, and t-shirts. 'There are several sports that are gaining popularity in India today. One of the biggest is outdoor sports – including hiking and trekking, which many people are taking up. Fitness is another major category on the rise, with activities like running and yoga seeing strong growth,' said Deepak D'Souza, Decathlon's India production head. While India is a key market for Decathlon – which reported €16.2 billion in net sales globally in 2024 – 60 per cent of its business still comes from Europe. Merlevede said the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA), currently under negotiation, 'will bring a lot of positive advantages' to both regions, and expressed hope it would be signed by the end of the year. If tariffs on sporting goods and textiles are reduced, the FTA could make it easier for Decathlon to supply European markets from India. Going forward, the company will focus on expanding production of footwear, fitness equipment, and technical textiles – such as swimwear – in India. IMF upgrades India's FY26 GDP growth forecast to 6.4% as trade tensions ease
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday raised its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for India to 6.4 per cent for both 2025-26 and 2026-27 on account of easing global trade tensions, with the world economy also seen expanding at a slightly faster pace than what the multilateral organisation had predicted in April. 'In India, growth is projected to be 6.4 per cent in 2025 and 2026, with both numbers revised slightly upward, reflecting a more benign external environment than assumed in the April reference forecast,' the IMF said in an update to its World Economic Outlook report, referring to India's fiscal years that begin in 2025 and 2026. According to non-partisan policy research center The Budget Lab at Yale, US consumers faced an overall average effective tariff rate of 18.2 per cent as on July 28, down from 28 per cent on April 9. India's GDP is estimated to have increased by 6.5 per cent in 2024-25, the lowest growth rate in four years. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), meanwhile, expects the GDP to grow by another 6.5 per cent in the current fiscal, with the Indian finance ministry estimating it in the range of 6.3-6.8 per cent. For 2026-27, the RBI on April 9 had forecast a growth rate of 6.7 per cent. Back in April, the IMF had cut its growth forecasts for India by 30 basis points (bps) to 6.2 per cent for 2025-26 and by 20 bps to 6.3 per cent for 2026-27 due to 'higher levels of trade tensions and global uncertainty'. Since then, the tariff war waged by the US has eased somewhat, with IMF Chief Economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas calling the Trump administration's April actions an 'unprecedented escalation'. Moreover, global financial conditions have eased and the US dollar has weakened around 8 per cent since January, allowing the IMF to now project that the global GDP will grow 3 per cent in 2025 and 3.1 per cent in 2026, up from 2.8 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively, predicted in April. However, the IMF continued to warn that while the 'modest decline in trade tensions' had contributed to the resilience of the global economy, tariffs remain 'historically high' and global policy remains highly uncertain, with risks to the world 'firmly to the downside'. '…compared to our pre-April 2 forecast, global growth is revised downwards by 0.2pp (0.2 percentage points) this year. At around 3 per cent, global growth remains disappointingly below pre-COVID average. And we continue to project a persistent decline in global trade as a share of output despite the recent frontloading, from 57 per cent in 2024 to 53 per cent in 2030,' Gourinchas said. One percentage point is equal to 100 basis points. The other countries expected by the IMF to grow at a faster pace now in both 2025 and 2026 include the US, Canada, China, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and Nigeria. China, in fact, received the largest growth forecast upgrade by the IMF, with its GDP now seen expanding 4.8 per cent in 2025, up from 4 per cent predicted in April. 'This revision reflects stronger-than-expected activity in the first half of 2025 and the significant reduction in US–China tariffs. The GDP outturn in the first quarter of 2025 alone implies a mechanical upgrade to the growth rate for the year of 0.6 percentage point. A recovery in inventory accumulation is expected to partly offset payback from front-loading in the second half of 2025. Growth in 2026 is also revised upward by 0.2 percentage point to 4.2 per cent, again reflecting the lower effective tariff rates,' the IMF said. China's GDP grew 5.4 per cent and 5.2 per cent in the first two quarters of 2025, beating forecasts, and keeping the world's second largest economy on track to meet the government's full-year growth target of 5 per cent.
