I'm over the moon – Hull KR's homegrown hero Mikey Lewis celebrates Wembley win
There is almost no-one for whom victory will have meant more than Lewis, who was born and brought up in the city and has brimmed with passion for the Robins since he came through the ranks, making his debut as an 18-year-old in 2019 and claiming the prestigious Super League Man of Steel award last year.
Yet, despite his likely status as a potential match-winner, Lewis, elevated to kicking duties in the absence of Rovers' Cup-tied full-back Arthur Mourgue, revealed it was most definitely not a case of practice makes perfect.
Looking dazed after the raucous celebrations that greeted the final hooter just moments after his kick sailed through the posts, Lewis said: 'I don't practice, so it was one of them where I trusted the process and, if I got a good strike on it, I knew it was over straight away.
'We said we can win this game in the 79th minute and that's what we did. I'm over the moon, proud. No-one can ever take this off me now – I'm a Challenge Cup winner and it will be with me for the rest of my life.'

Rovers had stood less than two minutes away from more final misery as Warrington entered the final stages with a four-point lead after a first-half try from Josh Thewlis and a superb performance from Marc Sneyd, whose mastery of the slippery conditions made him only the second player to win a third Lance Todd Trophy for man of the match.
Lewis, who had kicked a two-point penalty to give his side an early lead, was not at his best as the Super League leaders struggled to make an impression before the dramatic finale which saw Tyrone May's kick missed by Warrington's Aaron Lindop and Tom Davies pounce to slap down the vital try which was awarded after a tense video review.
Despite fully intending to bask in the glow of a long-awaited trophy, Lewis stressed the focus will soon shift to building on their breakthrough and finishing the season with more silverware, culminating in the Grand Final in October.
'I reckon it's going to feel like a bank holiday for the next week or so. We're going to enjoy this moment and then we'll go from there,' added Lewis, whose next engagement was a Sunday trophy parade with the rest of the Rovers players and staff from Craven Park to Hull's city hall.
'We thought it was our time. That was our theme – it's our time now and that's what it was. Hopefully that helps us a lot. We're just going to keep working hard, keep grounded and enjoy it.'
Rovers' new era will begin in earnest when they return to Super League action against Catalans Dragons on Friday and captain Elliot Minchella believes the manner of his side's win, despite being second best for the majority of the final, will stand them in good stead.
'We will definitely take a lot of belief out of that,' said Minchella, one of six Rovers winners, including Lewis, who had featured in the matchday 17 for their Wembley defeat to Leigh in 2023.
'We didn't play anywhere near our best, but we found a way to win and the best sides tend to do that to themselves. We'll probably look back and learn loads of things from this match. We made it tough for ourselves, but our resilience, grit and toughness has never been questioned.'
Warrington head coach Sam Burgess is also hoping for a boost after a performance in which his side made a mockery of their lowly eighth place in the Super League table.
'I think everyone can see what sort of team we are. Although our form in the league is not where it needs to be, everyone is aware of who we are and what we stand for as a group,' said Burgess.
'There's a lot of pain in there, but we'll take a really positive thing out of it. We have great belief and it'll give us the resolve and determination to attack the second half of the season.'

Blackburn boss Valerien Ismael says defender Callum Brittain will be allowed to run out his contract if the club do not receive an offer for him that meets their 27-year-old's deal expires at the end of the 2025-26 season and while Rovers are hoping to extend his stay, he could end up leaving for has rejected the offer of a new Rovers contract amid reported interest from other clubs."If he has to leave, he will leave, but he will only leave if the price is right for the club," Ismael told BBC Radio Lancashire."We are happy with Callum and if we have to go until the end of the season and risk that Callum goes for free, we'll do it. We are clear within the club."We made a strong offer to extend his contract and, at some point, maybe the thing can change."Brittain had refused to play in Rovers' friendly against Accrington Stanley but did make an appearance during their 1-0 victory over Everton on Saturday.

Albion Rovers boss knows what to expect from Cumbernauld Colts after club raided them for players this summer
The sides meet in a Lanarkshire derby on the opening day of the Lowland League this weekend Albion Rovers boss Sandy Clark says he will know what to expect from Saturday's Lowland League opener with Cumbernauld Colts - because their local rivals raided them for players over the summer. Colts snapped up a trio of stars from Rovers in the close season with right-backs Callum Home and Adam Fernie making the move from Monklands alongside forward Billy Mortimer. New Colts striker Josh Jack is also a former Rovers player. So with a derby to kick-off their new Lowland League campaign, Clark will be very familiar with some of the threats the visitors will pose. Asked what he is expecting from Colts, Clark said: 'I'm expecting to know a lot of their players! Some of them have certainly played here. I think they will be a little bit more experienced than us. 'Will they be better? I have no idea, time will tell. Will we give them a game? 100 per cent, we will give them a game alright and on the day, it will be a case of may the best team win. 'At training we try to replicate match situations as best we can, so we've had a good bit of time to prepare. This week we will really concentrate on Cumbernauld Colts and I'm sure we will be ready for that.' Rovers warmed up for that clash with a 3-2 friendly defeat at home to St Mirren B on Saturday. Nathan Brown and club captain Alan Reid were on target for the hosts against the Premiership youth outfit and Clark was disappointed with his side's defending at the Buddies' goals. Reacting to the result, Clark told the club media: 'We worked well. We are trying to rebuild the squad and it was a good challenge for us. Playing St Mirren B was like when we play Hearts B and Celtic B in league games, with their players passing the ball really well, they are fit, they are full-time, they are organised. 'So that's where the real challenge came from and I thought we handled it fairly well. If you look at the game, we've lost a goal inside 30 seconds, which is really poor play from us. 'We didn't stop the cross and our lads are saying it might have been offside, but at the end of the day their striker got in between our two defenders and it was a good header. 'We reacted well to it, got back into the game and made it 1-1, but then we lost a second goal from a header in the box again. So there is a warning there that we need to stop crosses and pick up players better. 'We lost our way a bit at that point and St Mirren got their third goal. Nathan Brown got us back into it with a good goal to make it 3-2 at half-time, but I felt we were the better team in the second half. 'We scored a really good goal that I felt was well onside but the officials didn't see it that way. 'We had some other chances, we stopped St Mirren playing, our press was better and what we got out of it in the end was a lot of fitness for certain players and I got a good look at the trialists. Gers kid signs on loan at Rovers Albion Rovers have snapped up goalkeeper Alfie Halliwell on loan from Rangers as they prepare to kick-off the new Lowland League season on Saturday. Cliftonhill gaffer Sandy Clark has added are the Scotland Youth International to his ranks and the teenager made his first outing for the Monklands men in Saturday's 3-2 friendly defeat to St Mirren B. The 17-year-old shot-stopper rose through the ranks at the Ibrox-based side, featuring in the Rangers B squad that lifted the Glasgow Cup, as well as training with the Rangers First Team squad on occasion, working alongside former Stoke City and Manchester Utd goalkeeper Jack Butland and former QPR and Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly. On the international stage, Alfie has two caps for the Scotland Men's U17s, making his debut in an international friendly away to Switzerland and was recently called up to a U19s training camp at the end of last season. Halliwell said: 'It feels really good and I am really excited for the season. 'Once I spoke to Sandy, I really wanted to play under him. Both him and George [Paterson] are really experienced in the game. 'I'm here to keep the ball out the back of the net. I am a young player that wants to play in men's football.'
