
Midnight munchies worrying Health Ministry as 42pc of adolescents, 34pc of adults overindulging
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said one of the key findings revealed that 41.8 per cent of adolescents and 33.5 per cent of adults consume heavy supper late at night at least once a week.
In light of the finding, he urged the public to reduce eating heavy meals late at night or consume them in moderation, as the habit negatively affects health.
'Reduce heavy suppers before going to bed, not that we can't have them, but always in moderation,' he told reporters after launching the NHMS 2024: Nutrition, here today.
According to NHMS 2024, late-night eating can negatively affect sleep quality, cause digestive issues, and increase the risk of heart disease.
NHMS 2024: Nutrition is a nationwide population-based survey on nutrition conducted periodically by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to assess dietary patterns and the nutritional status of Malaysians across various age groups.
A total of 5,147 respondents participated in the survey conducted from July to September 2024.
Meanwhile, Dzulkefly said another key finding is that 63.1 per cent of adolescents and 47.0 per cent of adults consume sugar in excess of recommended dietary levels, with nearly half of that sugar intake coming from sugary beverages.
As for salt, 75.9 per cent of the adult population consumes more than 2,000 milligrammes of salt daily, which is equivalent to more than 1½ teaspoons.
'Everyone is encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle, active living, good diet, and good cooking, because good diets start with good cooking.'

PETALING JAYA : The Melaka health department is preparing a proposal to ban the manufacturing and sale of e-cigarettes or vapes in the state. State health, human resources and unity committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem said the proposal will be presented to the state executive council for a decision later this year. 'The state government has yet to take a position on whether to support or reject the ban, as the matter is still under review,' Bernama reported him as saying during the Melaka assembly sitting at Seri Negeri today. He was responding to Low Chee Leong (PH-Kota Laksamana), who asked about the state government's stance on vape sales. Ngwe said while vapes are often seen as a safer alternative to conventional smoking, their nicotine content still poses addiction risks and health hazards, and are by no means 100% safe. He said vape liquids contain various harmful heavy metals such as nickel, chromium and arsenic, all classified as Group 1 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 'They also contain cobalt, which is toxic to the lungs, and cadmium, which can damage the kidneys and is also linked to cancer. 'These heavy metals have also been associated with mental health issues, including depression,' he said.

Sabah sees 66.6% jump in clean and safe food premises

Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya stated that the number of food premises receiving certification has surged from 57 to 95, representing a 66.6 percent increase. This demonstrates that the BeBAS initiative implemented by the Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) reflects the commitment of various parties in ensuring food premises are clean, safe, high-quality and smoke-free. 'Starting in 2024 and continuing into 2025, the Sabah State Food Safety and Quality Division has received numerous applications from restaurants and chain food premises across Sabah,' he said. 'This shows a strong commitment from food operators in Sabah to ensure their premises meet high standards of hygiene and safety. These efforts not only boost the confidence of local consumers but also support our growing food tourism sector,' he added during his speech officiating the 2025 Sabah State-Level World Food Safety Day Celebration here on Sunday. He noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) reports hundreds of millions of cases of foodborne illnesses annually. 'In Malaysia, the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) revealed a link between dietary patterns and non-communicable diseases. Additionally, food poisoning incidents remain a concern, and we find that a large segment of the population, particularly the elderly and teenagers, lack awareness about reading food product labels,' he explained. 'KKM implements various interventions to ensure the well-being of the people in this country, with the aspiration of transforming healthcare from sick care to health care. This is proven by the implementation of various high-impact programs and initiatives such as certification, recognition, licensing, and various other services by KKM for the food sector in Malaysia,' he elaborated. Furthermore, he called on consumers to play an active role in ensuring food safety. 'As consumers, we also play a crucial role in this food safety chain. We are responsible for verifying the authenticity of food safety-related information before sharing it. Always enhance your knowledge about food safety and practice the simple concepts of 'Observe and Choose' and 'Look, Smell, Taste'. These are the most basic and effective steps to avoid food poisoning and ensure the food we consume is safe,' he urged. The 2025 World Food Safety Day Celebration, themed 'Food Safety Science in Action,' is held annually on June 7 to highlight the role of science in ensuring safe food for all. The two-day program also saw several food premises at the Imago shopping mall receive BeSS recognition plaques as a symbol of their success in achieving the standards.

Offenders compulsory attendance order to reduce prison overcrowding, says Shamsul Anuar
KUALA LUMPUR: The Offenders Compulsory Attendance (Amendment) Bill 2025, that passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 28), aims to reduce prison overcrowding among other matters, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah says. The bill, among others, would allow Offenders Compulsory Attendance (PKW) to be given to offenders convicted of offences punishable by imprisonment of not more than 10 years, compared to the current imprisonment of not more than three years. Dr Shamsul said Malaysian Prisons Department statistics as of July 22 showed that there were 83,827 people in prison facilities, while 5,759 were undergoing rehabilitation in the community. "If you look at the actual capacity, the department's facilities can accommodate only 76,311 prisoners," he said when winding up the debate on the bill. Shamsul Anuar said the issue of prison overcrowding could cause an unconducive environment and have negative implications, such as the risk of spreading diseases among prisoners and prison staff. In addition, it could reduce the effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes, security risks due to unusual events such as riots and strikes, as well as worsen the government's financial burden. Meanwhile, Shamsul Anuar said that from 2010 to date, a total of 8,227 offenders have undergone PKW with a success rate of 94.5%, while only 5.25% had their orders cancelled. He said among the modules implemented through PKW were intervention programmes, spirituality, counselling, religion and related courses. The sitting continues on Tuesday. - Bernama
