
Researchers in U.K., Chennai, explore use of AI and social robots for early dementia detection and support
Researchers are exploring how technology, particularly robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), can play a deeper role in supporting human care.
Though still in its early stages, a notable example is the collaboration between Imperial College London and the Chennai-based Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), where a team is investigating how social robots could aid those living with dementia. The aim of this research is not only to provide companionship, but also to detect early signs of cognitive decline.
Use of social robots
The research seeks to use voice recognition and 'social robots' to detect early signs of cognitive decline. Social robots are those that interact and communicate with humans by following social behaviors and rules. According to Ravi Vaidyanathan, professor in biomecharonics at Imperial College London, who leads the research, the idea is to engage people with dementia and use these interactions to monitor their cognitive health.
'We are looking at how we can use voice interactions to diagnose dementia. By collecting data over time, the AI can help doctors spot early warning signs,' Prof Vaidyanathan explained. He believes the technology has the potential to identify changes in speech, like hesitation, difficulty finding words, or changes in inflection, that could signal the early stages of dementia. 'If we can get people to engage with the robot and enjoy the interaction, we create a richer dataset that may lead to more accurate diagnostics,' he added.
The pilot studies conducted so far are said to have shown encouraging results. In one particular study at SCARF, a social robot was used to engage participants diagnosed with dementia. The robot initiated conversations with people about their daily lives, asking simple questions such as, 'How did you sleep last night?' and 'How are you feeling today?'
Sridhar Vaitheshwaran, consultant psychiatrist and head of DEMCARES at SCARF, pointed out the positive outcomes, saying, 'People with dementia were genuinely interested in the robot and engaged in meaningful conversations. It was clear that they were interacting with it not as a machine, but as a companion.' This finding highlighted the potential for robots to alleviate feelings of isolation that many people with dementia experience.
Data for early detection
Prof. Vaidyanathan noted that the key goal of the research isn't just about keeping patients engaged but also about collecting meaningful data. 'We're gathering data in real-time, so it's not just about engaging people. It's about how we can make sure this interaction can lead to something useful. If we can detect early signs of dementia based on these conversations, we can better equip physicians with tools for early diagnosis,' he stated.
He also stressed the significance of regular check-ins. 'By having conversations with people every day, we can observe fluctuations in their speech over time, which could be early indicators of cognitive decline.'
Challenges in scaling up, data privacy
One of the biggest challenges in scaling this research, however, lies in the cross-cultural differences in language, speech patterns, and patient engagement. By testing the technology in different cultural contexts, the team aims to make the AI more adaptable to various accents, linguistic nuances, and communication styles.
While the potential for social robots in dementia care is exciting, the project also faces the critical issue of data privacy.
In the context of AI, voice recordings and other personal data can raise significant concerns. Prof. Vaitheshwaran said of the importance of ethical research practices, 'I think any research, any data that we gather from people needs to be protected and it has to be ethical, and we need to be careful about what we do with the data,' adding that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has developed comprehensive guidelines for the use of patient data.
'All of our studies undergo thorough review by our Ethics Committee to ensure that the data is handled ethically and securely,' he said.
The use of voice data, especially in healthcare settings, poses unique privacy challenges. According to the team, the data gathered is handled privately. Close oversight of both the research team and participants is maintained to ensure a degree of control. 'But when it comes to broader implementation, managing these aspects becomes much more complex — and that's something the research community hasn't fully resolved yet,' said Prof Vaidyanathan. He pointed out that as the research evolves, maintaining privacy during the broader deployment of the technology will be an ongoing concern.
Early intervention and reducing physician load
Looking ahead, Prof. Vaidyanathan said that the next step is to refine the technology for early dementia detection through AI-powered voice screening, which could alert physicians when further evaluation is needed. Ultimately, they aim to support clinicians and people with dementia through technology that is both effective and user-friendly.
'We want to move beyond just helping those already diagnosed with dementia. We aim to identify people at risk before they show any obvious symptoms.' He believes that if dementia is detected in its early stages, it could make a significant difference to managing the disease and improving patients' quality of life.
The team also wants to explore combining voice data with other diagnostic methods, like urinary tract information or even genetic markers. 'Voice interactions are one piece of the puzzle, but when combined with other diagnostic tools, we could create a more holistic approach,' Prof. Vaidyanathan said.

IT's pay puzzle: Wipro, TechM median salaries drop despite rise in headcount
Median remuneration to employees at Wipro Ltd and Tech Mahindra Ltd fell simultaneously for the first time in eight years in FY25, despite both companies expanding their workforces. Analysts said that this indicates that the two IT service providers likely added more freshers as well as hired replacements at lower salaries to boost profitability. In FY25, Wipro and Tech Mahindra reported a decline of 0.6% and 6.52% in annual median salary, respectively, according to their annual reports. At Wipro, median salary totalled ₹9.78 lakh (around $11,000), whereas median salary at Tech Mahindra worked out to ₹18.3 lakh for males and ₹15.4 lakh for females. Median salary is the mid-point of a set of salaries arranged in ascending order, where half the salaries are higher and half lower. In contrast, the country's two largest IT outsourcers—Tata Consultancy Services Ltd and Infosys Ltd—increased their median salary to employees by 6.3% and 9.6%, respectively. Median salary at the country's third-largest software services provider HCL Technologies Ltd is not yet known as the company has yet to release its annual report for FY25. Wipro and Tech Mahindra—India's fourth and fifth-largest IT firms—last reported such a simultaneous decline in median salary in FY17. Individually, Pune-headquartered Tech Mahindra has seen its median remuneration decline six times in the past 10 years, whereas it is the third such instance for the Bengaluru-based Wipro. Median remuneration to employees at Wipro does not include whole-time directors. TCS and Infosys reported such a decline only once in the past decade, in FY21 and FY15, respectively. HCLTech is the only company among the country's top five software services firms to have never seen its median salary decline. Emails sent to Wipro and Tech Mahindra remained unanswered till press time. The fall in the median remuneration comes at a time when profitability of the country's largest IT outsourcers has been under pressure. These companies are exploring various ways to improve operating margins and one such way is to hire junior employees at lower costs. Lower median remuneration at Wipro and Tech Mahindra could imply that the companies added more freshers and/or hired candidates at lower salaries to replace talent at mid-management and senior levels, which led to a decline in median salaries, analysts said. 'Firms such as Wipro and TechM are following the lead of TCS by moving work to tier-4 locations and increasingly hiring from universities which are less prestigious. This is significantly lowering the cost of these employees and bringing down the average wages paid," said Peter Bendor-Samuel, founder of Everest Group, a Dallas-based tech research firm. He added that this was done to boost operating margins. 'The relentless focus on reducing cost is having its desired effect of allowing these firms to post higher margins," said Bendor-Samuel. TCS, Infosys and HCLTech reported operating margins of 24.3%, 21.1% and 18.3%, respectively, in FY25, respectively. TCS's margin declined by 30 basis points, while Infosys and HCLTech's margins grew by 40 basis points and 10 basis points, respectively. Wipro and Tech Mahindra improved their profitability the most last year. Wipro increased its operating margins by 100 basis points to 17.1%, whereas Tech Mahindra's profitability jumped 360 basis points to 9.7%. Hiring more employees can increase the median, or the mid-level salary. If a company adds headcount, the median salary is expected to increase because there are more employees in the company. Still, if the median salary goes down, it means that the number of employees earning salaries below the median amount has increased and that middle and senior-level employees have decreased. Both Wipro and Tech Mahindra added headcount last year by 732 and 3,276 employees, respectively. Wipro ended with 233,346 employees whereas Tech Mahindra ended with 148,731 employees. TCS added 6,433 employees to end with 607,979 people, whereas Infosys added headcount by 6,338 to 323,578 people. In contrast, HCLTech reduced staff by 4,061 to end with 223,420 people, becoming the only IT outsourcer of the top five to cut headcount last fiscal. A second analyst said churn at the top may also have contributed to the decline in median salaries at both Wipro and Tech Mahindra. 'The reduction in median remuneration to employees is a reflection of the fact that the companies may have hired more freshers and/or let go of lateral and senior staff," said a Mumbai-based analyst on the condition of anonymity. Both Wipro and Tech Mahindra have seen churn at the top. Mint reported on 26 June that Tech Mahindra saw at least 20 senior management movements at leadership levels, including service lines and geography heads, since March 2024. Even at Wipro, despite chief executive officer Srinivas Pallia's emphasis for promoting internal candidates to top roles, the company has seen significant leadership churn. Over the past two years, at least 30 senior executives at the level of senior vice-president and above have exited, driven either by better opportunities, or limited growth prospects under Pallia's predecessor Thierry Delaporte, who stepped down last year after four years at the helm. However, a third expert attributed the falling median salary to experienced employees accepting roles at lower salaries in a challenging job market. 'Because growth has been flat for these companies, they are refocusing on investing in their experienced staff while also lowering the overall wage bill. During this challenging market, there are also many experienced workers available, and it's easier to hire experienced talent at lower wage levels," said Phil Fersht, chief executive of HFS Research. He added that this trend is not a one-off and that IT outsourcers are looking at hiring employees at lower costs. 'There is a lot of flux in global services at the moment, with many providers laying off staff, which is making the talent pool of experienced people larger and bringing down wage demands," said Fersht. Wipro and Tech Mahindra were the only two companies in the top five Indian IT firms to see a second successive full-year revenue decline in FY25. Wipro and Tech Mahindra reported revenue declines of 2.72% and 0.21% to $10.5 billion and $6.3 billion, respectively, in FY25.

A support group for bipolar disorder helps those affected find solace in each other

It was only after she sought professional help that the root of her turmoil could be detected – a mental health condition called bipolar disorder that causes extreme changes in mood, energy, and activity levels. Joining Samtol, a Pune-based support group dedicated to those navigating the complexities of this often-misunderstood condition, became a turning point in her life. Accompanied by her octogenarian mother, she found not only the necessary medical guidance but also a community that understood her struggles. Her mother too, educated about the condition through the support group's weekly meetings at Nivara Old Age Home in Shivajinagar, learned to recognise and manage her daughter's mood swings. His erratic behaviour culminated in a desperate escape to Nepal after abandoning his family, where legal troubles forced him to confront the consequences of his actions. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he embraced treatment with medication and talk therapy, finding stability in his life as he rebuilt trust with his family and secured a steady job. This support group for people with bipolar disorder, founded by Viren Rajput, who was diagnosed with the condition in the 90s, provides safe haven for individuals and their families grappling with the health condition. "I founded this support group to help those affected by the condition to draw support from each other. There were days and sometimes weeks at a stretch when I could not go to our shop and help my brothers with the family business. I had long phases of depression. But after diagnosis, I followed my doctor's advice, routinely took my medicines and found some stability with my wife's help," said Rajput, who also volunteers with Connecting NGO, a suicide prevention helpline. Started with just 7-8 members in Jan last year, the support group now has over 100 members. Dr Ulhas Luktuke, a psychologist who provides expert advice to Samtol members, said, "Bipolar disorder is a problem with the constitution of the brain, so it is difficult to control or modify it. It presents differently in different people. This is where the support group has been thoroughly helpful, where not only the person suffering from the condition gets insight into it, but also their caretakers learn what to watch out for and how. The condition requires a doctor, patient, and caretaker to work together." Luktuke observed that the first thing that members realise when they come for a meeting is that there are others who have gone through similar difficulties. "Most people don't understand our condition. We are isolated or labelled as difficult or quarrelsome," said a widowed senior citizen, who has found support from other senior people in the group. Dr Sujala Watve, former national supervisory psychologist for Mensa India and an advising psychologist for Samtol, said, "Initially, there was debate about taking oral medication for the condition due to misconception and fear of side effects. It took a while for members to understand that this is a life-long condition and that they will have to take medication based on the type of bipolar disorder they are diagnosed with. "
