Toyota insurers sue eThekwini Municipality, Department of Transport, and Transnet
Toyota's insurer, Tokio Marin and Nichido Fire Insurance has reportedly filed a R6.5 billion lawsuit in the Durban High Court against the Department of Transport in the Province, Transnet and the eThekwini Municipality.
It wants to be compensated for the enormous financial losses it suffered due to infrastructure failures of various government and state role players in 2022 during floods.

Picture: Supplied In a market that is showing strong signs of recovery, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has once again reaffirmed its dominance in the official June sales figures. 'The current automotive landscape is challenging but the June results from Naamsa's new vehicles statistics display great momentum that the industry has been able to sustain,' says Leon Theron, TSAM Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing. 'For our operations, the strong demand for the locally manufactured Hilux and Corolla Cross drove Toyota's continued dominance in South Africa's competitive new vehicle market. Toyota's passenger vehicle offerings remained dominant in June with 7 016 units sold. Surpassing the 2 000-mark, the locally produced Corolla Cross shifted gears to pole position as South Africa's top selling passenger vehicle. Other notable performances include the Toyota Fortuner (878) in ninth place and the Toyota Starlet (852) in 10th place. Toyota's premium division Lexus continued its impressive performance, recording 104 units, with the NX and GX contributing 34 and 33 units respectively. Toyota Hilux leads the way The consistent dominance of the Toyota Hilux in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment continued with a 26.3% market share, moving 3 032 units in June. In sixth place of the best-selling LCVs, the Land Cruiser 79 Pick-up shifted a remarkable 591 units while the Toyota HiAce placed seventh with 524. June marked the best fleet sales month of 2025 for Toyota, with 3 931 units sold to business customers through the dealer network. Standout fleet models, including the Corolla Cross, Hilux Extra Cab, Toyota Fortuner and Land Cruiser Pick-Up delivered their strongest fleet performances of the year. This performance reflects continued confidence in our vehicles, value, and long-term reliability. The parts division's performance held steady momentum with an excess of 1.9 million domestic pieces and 309 621 pieces exported to international markets. Overall Toyota vehicle exports recorded 4 247.

Not anymore with the introduction of the Chery Tiggo Cross hybrid. The Chinese carmaker has launched a massive price offensive on the Toyota Corolla Cross, the best-selling new energy vehicle in South Africa by a country mile. The Tiggo Cross self-charging hybrid is now on sale from R439 900, which is R54 500 less than the most affordable Corolla Cross HEV in Xs guise at R494 400. Even the top spec Chery Tiggo Cross hybrid in Elite guise at R469 900 is still R24 500 cheaper than the Xs hybrid. The Chery Tiggo Cross hybrid uses a combination of a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and electric motor powered by a 1.83kWh battery pack. The combined power output is an impressive 150kW and 310Nm which is sent to the front wheels by a dedicated hybrid transmission. The Toyota Corolla Cross has a combined power output of 90kW/142Nm. The Citizen Motoring drive the Chery Tiggo Cross hybrid briefly in China in April, but not on a public road. A little gymkhana course in a parking lot was enough to showcase its power. Fuel economy key What will be key for Chery is what kind of fuel economy it can achieve in real life. The claim is 5.4 litres per 100km, which is very much on par with the real-life number we have recorded in the Toyota Corolla Cross. We are getting a Chery Tiggo Cross hybrid on test soon. We will then find how not just how fast, but also how frugal it really is.

Top 10 best-selling car brands in South Africa in June
Here's the breakdown of South Africa's best-selling car brands in June 2025. In May, the Automotive Business Council of South Africa (naamsa) reported that the fifth month of the year signified a turning point for the local automotive market. Taking a glance at the top 10 best-selling car brands in South Africa in June (see the list below), the momentum gained from May's new-car sales continued into June, with most of the country's top-selling automakers recording increases in sales. Toyota once again lead the sales charts, with the local arm of the Japanese automaker, in June, recording a 1 360 unit increase in overall sales over May. Suzuki and Volkswagen remained in second and third place, respectively. There were a few changes, though, with Ford surpassing Hyundai for fourth spot, while Kia, with 1 230 units sold, was relegated from 10th to 12th position. BMW Group and Renault (1 318 units) took the 10th and 11th spots, respectively. In addition to the aforementioned South Korean and French automakers, the manufacturers who missed out on the top 10 were Nissan (13th, with 1 183 units), Omoda and Jaecoo (14th, with 1 009 units) and Jetour (15th, with 683 units). Of the total reported new car sales, an estimated 85.9% (40 621 units) represented dealer sales, with sales to the rental industry sales, corporate fleets and government accounting for 8.2%, 3.2% and 2.7% of the overall figure, respectively. Taking a closer look at the passenger and light commercial vehicle (LCV) segments, the former registered 32 570 new cars sold in June, a 21.7% increase compared with June 2024, while sales of LCVs, bakkies and mini-buses increased by 14.9%, to 12 129 units, in June.
