Hong Kong pop diva Karen Mok picks up HK$85 million luxury flat in Mid-Levels

According to the Land Registry, a 2,153 sq ft three-bedroom flat at Dynasty Court on Old Peak Road was sold for HK$84.5 million and handed over on June 12 to buyer Morris Karen Joy.
Dynasty Court is a luxury housing estate completed in 1991 by
Sun Hung Kai Properties . It comprises five blocks, with 409 residential units.
Mok, 55, has released 18 studio albums and starred in more than 40 films. She was the
first Hong Kong singer to win the Chinese music industry's prestigious Golden Melody Award three times and became the first-ever female solo artist to perform a concert at
Beijing's National Stadium , known as the Bird's Nest.
Her Mid-Levels transaction reflects how wealthy investors have been
snapping up luxury homes in Hong Kong on the cheap , as the prices of these exclusive abodes have plunged by as much as 45 per cent from their peak amid high interest rates.

How Andy Lau played Hong Kong's most corrupt cop in The Godfather-like crime epic Lee Rock

Lawrence Ah Mon, sometimes known as Lawrence Lau Kwok-cheung, was one of the second group of Hong Kong New Wave directors who made their mark in the late 1980s. Lau, who cut his teeth at Hong Kong broadcasting company RTHK, made his name with two documentary-style social realist dramas: 1988's Gangs and 1990's Queen of Temple Street – still one of the city's finest films. But his follow-up, the two-part Lee Rock, was something entirely different: a four-hour-long Godfather -like crime epic divided into two films. Halfway through shooting, Lau and producers Wong Jing and Jimmy Heung Wah-sing decided that rather than cut the story down to two hours – which was still 30 minutes longer than the 90 minutes mandated by cinema owners at the time – they would release two films weeks apart. Play Both Lee Rock: The $500,000,000 Detective and Lee Rock 2: Father and Son were big hits, taking a combined HK$53 million.

Hong Kong Book Fair's central plot rightly remains love of reading

Hong Kong's annual book fair has a long and entertaining story of its own. The festival has come a long way in the 35 years since its launch. The first event, in 1990, featured 149 exhibitors and an attendance of 200,000. Now, the fair goes beyond its literary roots to offer a much bigger and broader celebration of art, culture and lifestyle. This can be seen in this year's theme , which promotes a healthy appetite for food as well as for books. This year, there are hopes the seven-day festival, one of the region's biggest, will attract more than a million visitors, beating last year's record of 990,000. There are 770 exhibitors from 30 countries and 620 events. The book fair is complemented by a Sports and Leisure Expo and World of Snacks fair. There is a World of Arts and Culture exhibition and a Cultural and Creative Products Zone. It offers much for local people and tourists to enjoy. But a love of literature rightly remains at the heart of the festival, which also offers a series of seminars featuring authors. Last year, each visitor spent an average of HK$912 (US$116), accounting for an impressive 74 per cent of their annual print book expenditure, according to a survey conducted by the organiser, the Trade Development Council. The fair has an important role to play in promoting the joy of reading, especially among the young, in this age of social media. It is always encouraging to see book lovers queuing up for the event even before the doors open. Some are devoted to science fiction, others to comics. Last year, it was good to see that novels topped the list of visitor favourites.
