'Declare meats, fruits, vegetables': Travelers to US get weird reminder from CBP

Time of Indiaa day ago
CBP posted the photo of a sniffer dog inspecting the cooked head of a pig as CBP alerted travelers to US to declare all food items.
The Customs and Border Police Saturday issued a reminder to people traveling to the US that they are required to declare meats, fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, soil, animal as well as plant and animal products they are carrying to the country.
This is not a new rule but recently there have been several cases where non-declaration of these items got travelers penalized.
The post drew attention as the social media reminder was accompanied by a photo of a CBP detection dog inspecting a cooked pig's head wrapped in aluminum foil.
What does the rule say?
According to CBP rules, all travelers entering the United States are required to declare meats, fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, soil, animals, as well as plant and animal products (including soup or soup products) they may be carrying.
The declaration must cover all items carried in checked baggage, carry-on luggage, or in a vehicle.
Upon examination of plants, animal products, and associated items, the CBP agriculture specialists at the ports of entry will determine if these items meet the entry requirements of the United States.
If these prohibited items are bot declared by passengers, they are confiscated and disposed of by CBP. Penalties may range up to $1,000 per first-time offense for non-commercial quantities.

In March, a US TikToker who was coming back home after traveling from Signapore narrated his ordeal at the JFK Airport, He declared nothing at customs but when he went to get his Uber, border agents and a sniffer dog stopped him to take a look at his bag. The dog smelled something in his bag and it was a banana about which the TikToker said he completely forgot. The CBP warned him of a possible $500 fine for bringing in an undeclared agricultural item.
"I was rightfully flabbergasted. I know what can and can't be brought across borders — I've traveled my entire life, visited over 20 countries, and explored all 50 states thoroughly. But the way this was handled struck me as odd," the TikToker said.

Govt owes tourism contractors over Rs 39.7cr with bills from 2019

Panaji : From housekeeping services and painting to legal fees and translations, the tourism department has racked up Rs 39.7 crore in unpaid bills. Contractors for events, vehicles and executed projects have been fretting with their money lying locked up with the tourism department as well as the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), with some of the bills dating all the way back to 2019. Among those that the department owes money are govt entities such as Goa Human Resource Development Corporation Limited and Goa Electronics Limited. The tourism department's 17 outstanding bills are largely for tourism roadshows and trade fairs, and most are for the current year with just two bills dating back to Dec 2024. However, GTDC's track record of clearing bills of contractors and event management firms is not on par. The Goa Human Resource Development Corporation Ltd provided security services at GTDC residencies for 2019-20 for which it billed GTDC Rs 1.03 crore, an amount that remains unpaid, shows data released in the state legislative assembly. Invoices towards the organisation of the Manohar Parrikar Vidnyan Mahostav in Dec 2021 worth Rs 3.7 lakh also remain unpaid. Not just bricks & stones: PM Modi lauds defiance legacy of Bundelkhand forts

Kanpur: In his 124th edition of 'Mann Ki Baat' address on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the historical pride of Bundelkhand forts, saying they are symbols of cultural pride and resistance to foreign invasions. Celebrating Bundelkhand's historical legacy, he said: "These forts are not just bricks and stones, but a symbol of our culture, pride and values." Evoking national pride, Modi made a special mention of the Kalinjar Fort located on the Vindhya mountain range in Banda district, explaining how Mahmud of Ghazni attacked it multiple times, but was unsuccessful in capturing it. "Kalinjar Fort in Banda, Uttar Pradesh — Mahmud Ghaznavi attacked this fort many times and failed every time," he said. The PM named Gwalior, Jhansi, Datia, Ajaygarh, Garhkundar, and Chanderi as symbols of cultural resilience. "These forts are not just bricks and stones; they are symbols of our heritage. Sanskar and self-respect still peep from the high walls of these forts," he added. Urging people to explore these historical forts and connect with India's glorious past, the PM also emphasised the need to draw national attention to these sites to boost tourism in Bundelkhand. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Reacting to the PM's address, Jhansi MP Anurag Sharma posted on X, "It is a matter of immense pride for the entire Bundelkhand that honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the region's historical heritage and forts in his popular programme 'Mann Ki Baat'."
