Chemical weapons watchdog again finds banned tear gas in Ukraine samples
It was the third time the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has confirmed the use of CS gas in areas where fighting is taking place in Ukraine.
The OPCW, based in The Hague, said the toxic agent was present in samples from two grenade shells, two soil samples, two vegetation samples and the remains of a drone.
The watchdog also collected documents, digital files and direct testimonies, it said.
The report did not blame either Ukraine or Russia for the use of the substance, which is banned in war zones.
The Chemical Weapons Convention prohibits the use of riot control agents, including CS gas, "as a method of warfare".
Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of using chemical weapons in the three-year-old conflict.
Kyiv's Western allies also claim that Moscow has used banned weapons.
The OPCW had previously reported confirmations of the presence of CS gas in samples provided by Ukraine in November 2024 and in February this year.
"The repeated discovery of riot-control agent grenades near active conflict zones in the Dnipropetrovsk region is deeply concerning," OPCW director general Fernando Arias said, noting "the pressing need to reinforce adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention".

Deputy head of Russian Navy killed by Ukraine in Kursk area, says Moscow
Major General Mikhail Gudkov, deputy head of the Russian Navy and a former commander of a marine brigade fighting against Ukraine, has been killed in action, depriving Moscow of one of its most senior officers, the Russian military said on Thursday. Gudkov, who was handed a top military honour in the Kremlin by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February, was killed on Wednesday "during combat work in one of the border districts of Kursk region," the Defence Ministry said in a statement. Unofficial Russian and Ukrainian military Telegram channels had earlier reported that Gudkov had been killed, along with other servicemen and officers, in a Ukrainian missile attack on a command post in Russia's Kursk region, which borders Ukraine, with a US-made HIMARS missile. Reuters could not independently verify how Gudkov, 42, lost his life. In charge of the navy's coastal and land forces, including marine units, he is one of the most senior Russian military officers to have been killed since Moscow launched its full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022. At least 10 other senior Russian commanders have been killed in action or assassinated by Kyiv since the start of the war. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, which accused Gudkov and his subordinates of committing various war crimes, something Moscow denied. In the far eastern port city of Vladivostok, the home base of Russia's Pacific Fleet, mourners left flowers near an outdoor portrait of Gudkov, part of a photo exhibition celebrating officers Russia regards as military heroes. Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of the Primorsky region which includes the port, said in a statement that Gudkov, whom Putin appointed deputy commander-in-chief of the navy in March, had been killed "carrying out his duty as an officer" along with others, and expressed his condolences to the dead men's relatives. Attached to his statement was a video showing him awarding Gudkov a military honour and images of Gudkov — set to a patriotic Russian song — on the battlefield. "When he became deputy chief of the navy, he did not stop personally visiting the positions of our marines," Kozhemyako said on Telegram. Before his promotion to the navy's top brass, Gudkov had led a marine brigade of Russia's Pacific Fleet, which had fought in Ukraine and had fought in Kursk too. Parts of Kursk were seized by Ukrainian forces in a surprise offensive in August 2024 before Russia said earlier this year it had driven them out.

US defends decision to pause some Ukraine weapons shipments
The US on Wednesday defended its decision to pause some weapons shipments to Ukraine, including critical air defence interceptors and precision munitions, due to concerns over declines in US stockpiles. Critics have said the move plays into Russian President Vladimir Putin' s hands and could prolong the war, leaving Ukraine more vulnerable to Russian missile and drone attacks. Politicians have also challenged the argument from US President Donald Trump's administration that US stockpiles are running low. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said the decision was made after a Defence Department review of US military support to countries around the world. The decision was to put 'America's interests first". 'We have been Ukraine's biggest supporter, emotionally, militarily, financially, and there's a reason for that,' Ms Bruce said. 'This is not a cessation of us assisting Ukraine or of providing weapons. This is one event in one situation.' She said the Trump administration continues to ask European allies to increase their contribution to Ukraine, and the priority continues to be reaching a negotiated end to the war. 'It remains, as you might imagine, worth repeating a priority of President Trump to bring the Russia -Ukraine war to an end through a durable, negotiated settlement, starting with an immediate ceasefire,' Ms Bruce said. Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen said she was disappointed the administration has stopped the arms shipments to Ukraine 'at a time when they are being pummelled by Russian drones and explosions". 'It's the worst possible time to be cutting back on those weapons,' she told a New Hampshire radio station. Quoting unidentified US sources, AP on Tuesday reported that the pause includes some shipments of Patriot missiles, precision-guided GMLRS, Hellfire missiles and field gun rounds, as well as other weapons. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the decision was 'a common sense, pragmatic step' towards a evaluating weapons shipments. 'Let it be known that our military has everything that it needs to conduct any mission anywhere, any time, all around the world,' Mr Parnell told journalists. 'We have the most lethal fighting force in the world.' He declined to say which weapons and munitions would be delayed or for how long. Defence Department official Elbridge Colby in a statement said officials have sought to provide Mr Trump 'with robust options to continue military aid to Ukraine, consistent with his goal of bringing this tragic war to an end". The decision to halt some weapons to Ukraine is particularly surprising, given that Mr Trump has long promised to quickly end the Russia-Ukraine war. The decision comes at a critical time for Ukraine. Last month the Group of Seven summit – a historically pro-Ukrainian forum – ended without a joint statement after Mr Trump cut short his trip in Canada to address the Israel-Iran war.
