Gary Neville launches mission to improve the UK's worst pitches

Former England and Manchester United defender Gary Neville has launched a Best Worst Pitch Initiative to breathe new life into underfunded grassroots football pitches.
The Best Worst Pitch initiative will provide line painting and pitch maintenance equipment, as well as maintenance training to 50 UK grassroots clubs.
Specsavers has partnered with Man United and England legend to launch the Best Worst Pitch initiative.
Open to clubs across the UK, the initiative will provide teams who are most in need with professional line painting equipment and GPS pitch mapping, pitch maintenance equipment, as well as maintenance training to help them maintain their pitches through the next season and beyond.
Clear and accurate line markings are vital not just for ensuring structure and fairness in the game, but also for helping players and officials navigate the pitch-enhancing visibility, spatial awareness, and overall safety throughout play.
Gary Neville added: " Anyone who has played football at one point or another has played on a dodgy pitch. Grassroots football is the foundation of our sport and it's great to be a part of the Best Worst Pitch initiative supporting the communities and volunteers who make it possible.'
The announcement comes as UK football governing bodies have recently highlighted that maintaining grassroots pitches across the UK is one of the main issues facing the sport.
With councils stretched for funding, the responsibility for maintaining club pitches, often falls on dedicated members of the grassroots football community.
It's a challenge Specsavers has seen up close, having documented the journey of grassroots teams through the Best Worst Team campaign—highlighting the real struggles faced at pitch level and further underlining the brand's long-standing commitment to supporting the grassroots football community.
Speaking about the struggles of Pitch maintenance, Chairman of current Specsavers Best Worst Team, Tunley Athletic, Craig Doughty said:
'It's a real slog sometimes - every week, rain or shine, I'm out there doing two full laps of the pitch just to get the lines marked.
'The equipment we've got is ancient—it clogs, it leaks, and it takes twice as long as it should. On dark evenings or when the wind's howling, it feels like it takes forever. But I do it because I love this club—it means everything to the community.'
Alongside providing equipment, Specsavers is also offering training and education to the selected clubs—aiming to tackle some of the long-term challenges faced by grassroots teams and the volunteers who maintain their pitches.
The goal is to improve the quality and longevity of these pitches, ensuring local communities can continue to enjoy them for many matches to come.
Kim Bull, PR and Social Lead, commented: 'Over the last two seasons supporting clubs that need a bit of help with their eyes and ears, as well as their game, we've noticed the effort that goes into keeping grassroots clubs running. People like Craig, who quietly put in the hard work behind the scenes to keep pitches playable, is what grassroots football is all about. This initiative means we can support more clubs and communities, like Tunley. By making faded lines more visible, we're helping players see the beautiful game more clearly. And hopefully make fewer mistakes!'

Former Man United star Javier Hernandez breaks silence after he was fined following sexist comments

Javier Hernandez has broken his silence after being fined for making sexist comments. The former Manchester United striker sparked fury by accusing women of 'eradicating masculinity' in an explosive Instagram rant on Friday last week. Hernandez, affectionately dubbed 'Chicarito,' claimed women are making society 'hypersensitive' and that they should focus on 'multiplying, cleaning, maintaining the home'. He was fined and reprimanded by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and his current side Chivas for his remarks. And now Hernandez, 37, has apologised for his 'any confusion or upset' in the wake of his comments and the subsequent backlash. 'I sincerely thank everyone who has supported me, who has respectfully shared their perspectives with me and demanded that I be a better person,' he wrote on Instagram. 'I am deeply sorry for any confusion or upset my recent words have caused; It was never my intention to limit, hurt or divide. 'As a father, man and member of this community, my priority is to act with respect, humility and responsibility. 'I am listening, reflecting, and committed to expressing myself with greater clarity and sensitivity, especially on such sensitive topics. 'I believe that change begins with oneself. I will take advantage of this opportunity to understand, grow and continue working to be a better version of myself, from honesty, love for my family, my values and love for all of you. Thank you for your understanding, demand, love and company on this path.' Hernandez was blasted by fans on social media as well as public figures for his outburst. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexico's first female president, said: 'Chicharito is a very good [footballer] but when it comes to his opinion on women... he still has a lot to learn.' In a joint statement between the FMF and Mexico's top men's and women's leagues, they said the country's gender and diversity commission had opened an investigation into Hernandez's comments 'to prevent and punish this behaviour'. Chivas said the comments were 'contrary to the principles and values' of the club and that they had taken 'appropriate action' against Hernandez, though they did not specify which action. Hernandez spent five years at Old Trafford, winning two Premier League titles before leaving in 2015. The Mexican is his country's all-time record goalscorer, with 52 strikes in 109 appearances, and also played for Real Madrid as well as spending two years with both West Ham and Bayer Leverkusen. He has now been subjected to a stream of criticism over the comments he made, which saw him state: 'Women, you are failing. You are eradicating masculinity by making society hypersensitive. 'Embrace your feminine energy: nurturing, caring, receiving, multiplying, cleaning, maintaining the home, which is the most precious place for us men. 'Do not be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man who only wants to see you happy, because we do not know heaven without you. Holding yourselves responsible for your energy is also a way of loving you.' He added: 'Men, we are failing in the lack of commitment, putting our partners last, not keeping our word, and not prioritising habits to become admirable. 'I understand that we are afraid to speak and truly express what we feel because they are trying to eradicate masculinity, since in certain cases of the past, feminine energy was suppressed, but many of us are here wanting to love you, take care of you, respect you, and provide for you. 'But you women must learn to honour masculinity,' he concluded. Hernandez's latest rant follows another controversial Instagram post from just a day earlier.

Man Utd handed massive Antony transfer boost after unexpected development

Manchester United have a group of four players they want to sell in the summer transfer window after they were exiled by Ruben Amorim ahead of the pre-season tour Manchester United's hopes of selling Antony this summer have been boosted amid reported interest from Saudi Arabia. Antony is part of the so-called 'bomb squad' at United, having been frozen out of the first-team set-up by Ruben Amorim, who is desperate to offload him. United have signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this summer for a combined total of £133.5million and know they need to sell players in order to balance the books. Marcus Rashford has been sent on loan to Barcelona, who are covering his wages, but Antony remains on the books along with Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia. Amorim has jetted off to Chicago to start United's pre-season tour without the exiled foursome, who have been told to look for new clubs. Antony spent the second half of last season on loan at Real Betis and had hoped to move to Seville permanently. The Brazilian winger got nine goals and five assists in 26 games for Betis last season, reviving his career and earning many new fans in the process. Betis are keen to re-sign him for the 2025/26 season, but want another loan, rather than a permanent deal. United have different ideas and are seeking a club who will sign Antony, who cost £85m from Ajax in 2022. They have received some interest from Atletico Madrid, but the Spanish side have not followed up on it yet. Nevertheless, a new avenue could be open, with Sky Sports reporting that two unnamed Saudi Arabian sides are considering a move for Antony. Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich are also in the picture, but all the clubs are weary over the costs involved in a deal. It is understood that Antony would prefer to stay in Europe's top leagues, rather than move to the Middle East. Erik ten Hag – the man who oversaw his best form at Ajax and authorised his big-money move to United – is now in charge of Leverkusen, but he has distanced himself from a transfer. 'He has great quality,' he told BILD recently. 'I signed him twice. He was like a son to me, he still is a son to me. We're not interested in him at the moment, but we'll see what happens in the future.' Antony has returned just 12 goals and five assists in 96 games for United and is a major drain on resources. He earns £200,000-a-week at Old Trafford, where he is under contract until June 2027. After a miserable time at United, he loved his stint at Betis, who he helped reached the Conference League final. 'Yes, I'm very happy. I found myself,' he said at the time. 'I needed to find myself and be happy. My family needed to be happy too. Every day that passes confirms it was the best decision and as you said, I'm enjoying the city and the club every day.'

Revealed: Marcus Rashford's Man Utd exit brokered by ex-ref and darts fanatic

Marcus Rashford's transfer to Barcelona from Manchester United was brokered in part by a former semi-professional referee and darts nut turned respected commercial and technology lawyer. The United striker's brother and representative Dwaine Maynard enlisted the services of Simon Leaf, a highly regarded partner at law firm Mishcon de Reya, where he heads up the sport and technology division. Maynard was further assisted by another well-regarded figure, Kosti Theoharides, who works for the super agent Arturo Canales's AC Talent group, where is involved in player management, contract negotiations, PR and marketing. Leaf, a first-class honours graduate in land economy and management studies from the University of Cambridge, specialises in technology and sports transactions and has a history of working with Premier League clubs, governing bodies, sports stars and global media and technology giants. An Aston Villa supporter and keen darts fan who previously represented Cambridge against Oxford University live from the Darts World Championship, Leaf formerly refereed in the Conference and Premier League under-23 league. He recently co-authored the chapter on financial regulation in Football and the Law, a leading football law book. Rashford celebrated his season-long loan move to Barcelona in some style by dining out with the club's president Joan Laporta and other board members at one of the city's most exclusive restaurants. The England striker was wined and dined at Amar at Hotel El Palace, a sumptuous seafood restaurant run by the Michelin-starred chef Rafa Zafra, on Wednesday night. According to El Periodico, the 18-strong party enjoyed dishes of tuna belly, crab cannelloni, prawns and mongetes (white beans)from Santa Pau as well as Wagyu beef, Galician blonde steak and the restaurant's renowned cheesecake for dessert. Mount vows to make No 10 spot his own Mason Mount has vowed to make himself indispensable to Ruben Amorim – despite the Manchester United manager spending more than £130 million on two new players in his position. New signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have been earmarked for the two No 10 roles in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system in a direct threat to Mount's place in the team. But the former Chelsea midfielder – who is one of about seven different senior options in the No 10 position – says he is confident of holding down a regular starting place after fighting his way back to form and fitness at the end of last season. 'One hundred per cent – any time you do get that opportunity to be on the pitch, you want to do something, you want to affect the game,' Mount said. 'That's always the way I've looked at it. Any opportunity you get, you've got to try to take it. I'll always back myself. I know what I can do. Obviously with the new signings coming in, they're going to elevate us to another level and we all need to be at that level to really perform. 'When you're at a club like Manchester United, there has to be that competition there to perform. We know last season wasn't good enough so it's about kicking on.' United's new chef On the subject of quality food, United's squad are being catered for by a new head performance chef on their tour. Will Carvalho joined United in June, replacing Omar Meziane who left in October. Carvalho arrived from Brighton, where he had been the executive performance chef for the past two seasons, and has wasted no time in ingratiating himself with the players. His rice pudding is said to be going down particularly well. In an interview with Telegraph Sport earlier this year, Carvalho offered some insight into what he likes to cook for players. At Brighton, he revealed that for breakfast players would have a wide choice of omelette fillings while lunches were themed around 'the home nations or world regions'. Before matches, Carvalho – who also worked for Gloucester rugby union team previously – said: 'We aim for high-carb options, so we always have two: a pizza station and arancini.' These would be balanced with two 'high-fuel' salad options and eight different types of pasta and a mixture of potato and vegetable dishes. Wilcox and Berrada watch training Amorim has been wasting no time putting his United players through their paces in Chicago ahead of a huge season for the club. Despite the heatwave that hit the Windy City on Wednesday, the squad trained for two-and-a-half hours, starting at 8am that morning at Chicago Fire's new state-of-the-art Endeavour Health Performance Centre. The training complex, which has only been open a few weeks, is just a few miles from the team's hotel and is big enough to allow United and the Fire to train there at the same time. Amorim oversaw a shorter 90-minute session on Thursday and has been spotted in conversation on the sidelines with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, who have been observing the sessions. The facility boasts an impressive gym which opens out onto pitches in the shadow of the spectacular Chicago skyline, with the iconic Sears Tower in the background. Harry Maguire is training with the squad, having flown out a day later than his team-mates to deal with a personal matter. United face West Ham at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, the venue for next summer's World Cup final, on Sunday in their first game of the Premier League Summer Series, which also involves Bournemouth and Everton. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Manchester United (@manchesterunited) Small travelling staff Up to 450 jobs have been cut under Sir Jim Ratcliffe at United over the course of the past year and there is a distinctly smaller staff on this US tour than in past years, when numbers had ballooned. Around 60 football, security and commercial staff have travelled to America this time around, which does not include Amorim, his coaches and the players. That is a far cry from a decade ago when staff numbers during the US tours when Louis van Gaal was manager were reported to have reached as high as 140.
