Horror as girl, 12, plunges to her death from apartment window after petty argument with friend
Arya Lebeau, 12, was staying with friends at an apartment complex in Southbridge, about 60 miles west of Boston near the Connecticut border, when she got into a disagreement about a slice of pizza early Saturday morning, according to Boston.com.
The Southbridge Police Department and the Worchester County District Attorney's Office quickly launched an investigation into what they are calling an 'unattended death'.
Though authorities have shared few details so far, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is waiting on the results of an autopsy to determine the exact cause.
'I dropped her off for her sleepover, and I just feel like I'm waiting for her to come home,' Charlene Cabrera, Arya's mother, told NBC News.
'I just want justice for my daughter,' she added. 'I want to make sure that this is investigated properly and that we have everything we need to make sure she gets justice.'
On Friday night, Cabrera dropped her daughter off at a friend's house after being told a parent would be there, ensuring her young daughter would be supervised, WCVB News reported.
However, just two hours later, she received the worst news a parent could hear - her daughter had fallen from an apartment window, and no adults were home.

'I was told it was a kick and she fell out the window,' Cabrera told WCVB.
Like Cabrera, Jeremy Lebeau, Arya's father, only learned after the tragedy that the kids had been left home alone.
'Part of her summer list was to have sleepovers, which is what she was doing,' he told the outlet.
'She was the greatest child I could have in my life. I miss her,' he added. 'I just want closure - no matter what, I just want closure, I want answers.'
While the investigation is still ongoing, Dimas Cabrera - a woman identifying herself as Arya's grandmother - shared more details about what happened leading up to her granddaughter's death in a Facebook post.
She explained that an argument over a slice of pizza quickly escalated, leading to the 12-year-old girl being kicked out the window and falling on her head.
The fall, according to the woman, also might have started as a game to 'scare' Arya but quickly got out of hand.
Despite being rushed to the hospital for life-saving treatment, Arya tragically passed away just hours later early Saturday morning from her injuries.

Now, her family is left shattered and grieving over her sudden death, as she was only supposed to be spending time with friends and innocently enjoying her childhood.
'I tell everyone she was 12 going on 23. She had the next few years planned out already,' Cabrera told WCVB.
'She was so hopeful for the future, and this summer she was really looking forward to many activities with her friends.'
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help fund a proper memorial service and support Arya's family as they grieve, honoring the precious memory of her young life.
'I cannot express the amount of grief I feel at the loss of my only baby,' Cabrera wrote to the GoFundMe page.
'I have no words, but would like to thank every single person, parent and child for reaching out and for your loving support,' she added. 'It is truly beautiful seeing a whole community coming together to support her.'
'I know we will raise enough money to give my baby girl a peaceful rest.'

From the ridges on your fingernails to the colour of your tongue, there are plenty of signs that something might be wrong with your health. Now, an expert has revealed the smell of your breath is something to keep an eye on, too. Many might assume that bad breath – also known as halitosis – is the result of poor teeth cleaning or drinking too much coffee. However, research suggests breath odour may be an early warning sign of systemic health issues. Certain scents could indicate diabetes, while others could point to liver dysfunction. 'Your breath can offer a surprising window into your health,' dental technologist Allen Zhang said. He said there are five commonly overlooked types of breath that could signal a health issue. So, do you recognise any of them? FRUITY OR ACETONE-LIKE This odour could indicate poorly-controlled diabetes, Mr Zhang explained. Research suggests that fruity-smelling breath can be a sign of high ketone levels in the blood, which can occur in individuals with the condition. Those affected might have breath that smells like pear drop sweets or nail polish remover. METALLIC This smell could suggest someone is suffering from kidney dysfunction or heavy metal exposure. This symptom arises when the kidneys are unable to effectively remove waste from the body – including urea, which forms ammonia when mixed with saliva. The presence of ammonia in breath can sometimes be perceived as having a metallic tinge. FISHY A fishy-smelling breath could indicate a condition called trimethylaminuria, Mr Zhang said. This is a metabolic disorder where the body cannot break down trimethylamine, a compound that smells like rotten fish. Fishy breath can also be a symptom of liver problems, specifically related to a condition called fetor hepaticus. Fetor hepaticus, often described as 'breath of the dead', arises when the liver is unable to properly filter certain toxins from the blood. These toxins, like dimethyl sulphide, can build up in the blood and be exhaled, causing the characteristic odour. Breath that smells sulphurous or like rotten eggs, can be an indicator of gastrointestinal issues. The smell is called by hydrogen sulphide gas, which can be produced during digestion. MUSTY Finally, musty breath could mean there is something wrong with your kidneys or be a sign of liver failure. 'These are diagnostic clues and not just hygiene red flags,' Mr Zhang said. 'New tech is emerging to help clinicians detect disease risk via oral biosignatures, including volatile sulphur compounds and ketones in the breath.' Mr Zhang is the founder of ProDENT, a company developing intraoral imaging solutions for early detection. CAUSES OF BAD BREATH (HALITOSIS) There are a number of possible causes of halitosis: Poor oral hygiene This is the most common cause. Bacteria that build up on your teeth – particularly between them – as well as your tongue and gums, can produce unpleasant-smelling gases. These bacteria are also responsible for gum disease and tooth decay. Food and drink Eating strongly flavoured foods, such as garlic, onions and spices, is likely to make your breath smell. Strong-smelling drinks, such as coffee and alcohol, can also cause bad breath. Bad breath caused by food and drink is usually temporary. Good dental hygiene will also help. Smoking As well as making your breath smell, smoking stains your teeth, irritates your gums, and reduces your sense of taste. It can also significantly affect the development of gum disease, another major cause of bad breath. Crash dieting Crash dieting, fasting, and low-carbohydrate diets are another possible cause of bad breath. They cause the body to break down fat, which produces chemicals called ketones that can be smelled on your breath. Medication These include: nitrates – these are sometimes used to treat angina; some chemotherapy medication; and tranquillisers (phenothiazines). If the medication you're taking is causing bad breath, your GP may be able to recommend an alternative. Medical conditions In rare cases, bad breath can be caused by certain medical conditions. In dry mouth (xerostomia), the flow and composition of saliva may be affected. Dry mouth can sometimes be caused by a problem in the salivary glands or by breathing through your mouth instead of your nose. In some cases, gastrointestinal conditions can also cause bad breath. For example, a bacterial infection of the stomach lining and small intestine (H. pylori infection) and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) have been linked to bad breath. Ghislaine Maxwell interviewed again by deputy US attorney general
The deputy US attorney general, Todd Blanche, held a second in-person meeting on Friday with Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted sex trafficker and longtime associate of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Blanche had confirmed the two met behind closed doors in Tallahassee, Florida, on Thursday, at the federal prosecutor's office within the federal courthouse in the state capital, and they met again on Friday. Maxwell's lawyer, David Oscar Markus, on Friday afternoon said Blanche had finished his questioning for the day, NBC News first reported. Markus told reporters as he left the courthouse in downtown Tallahassee: 'We started this morning right around 9 o'clock, and went to now lunchtime, and we're finished after all day, yesterday and today. Ghislaine answered every single question asked of her over the last day and a half. She answered those questions honestly, truthfully, to the best of her ability. She never invoked a privilege. She never refused to answer a question.' He added: 'They asked about every single, every possible thing you could imagine. Everything.' The justice department has not said whether Blanche intends to question Maxwell further. Markus said he did not know whether the discussions would have any impact on her case. He had previously said Thursday's meeting was 'very productive'. Blanche had announced earlier in the week that he had contacted Maxwell's lawyers to see if she might have 'information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims'. Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence at a federal prison in Tallahassee, after a jury convicted her of sex trafficking in 2021. An uproar continues to engulf Donald Trump and calls have intensified for his administration to release all details of the federal investigation into Epstein, while questions remain about whether Maxwell has any fresh light to shed on her former boyfriend's crimes. Meanwhile, the US supreme court is due to wade into the controversy and decide whether to hear a bid by Maxwell to overturn her criminal conviction. Epstein killed himself in 2019 in a jail cell in New York while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. Trump, dogged by questions about his ties to Epstein, headed to Scotland on Friday for a trip that will mix golf with politics mostly out of public view. Protests await the president in the UK over his extreme agenda while scandal nips at his heels in the US. Further talking to reporters after Friday's meeting, Markus said: 'We don't know how it's going to play out. We just know that this was the first opportunity she's ever been given to answer questions about what happened, and so the truth will come out about what happened with Mr Epstein. And she's the person who's answering those questions.' Prosecutors and the judge who oversaw Maxwell's 2021 trial have said that she made multiple false statements under oath and failed to take responsibility for her actions. She was convicted for sex trafficking and other crimes, and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. 'People have questioned her honesty, which I think is just wrong,' Markus said. Asked if Maxwell had received an offer of clemency from the government, Markus said no offer had been made. Trump rejected the idea of a pardon for Maxwell after landing in the UK on Friday. 'A lot of people have been asking me about pardons' for Maxwell, he said. 'Obviously, this is no time to be talking about pardons.' Meanwhile, the supreme court justices, now on their summer recess, are expected in late September to consider whether to take up the appeal by Maxwell against her conviction in 2021 by a jury in New York for helping Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls. Maxwell's lawyers have told the supreme court that her conviction was invalid because a non-prosecution and plea agreement that federal prosecutors had made with Epstein in Florida in 2007 also shielded his associates and should have barred her criminal prosecution in New York. Her lawyers have a Monday deadline for filing their final written brief in their appeal to the court. Some legal experts see merit in Maxwell's claim, noting that it touches on an unsettled matter of US law that has divided some of the nation's regional federal appeals courts. Mitchell Epner, a former federal prosecutor now in private practice, said there was a chance that the supreme court would take up the case, and noted the disagreement among appeals courts. Such a split among circuit courts can be a factor when the nation's top judicial body considers whether or not to hear a case. 'The question of whether a plea agreement from one US attorney's office binds other federal prosecution as a whole is a serious issue that has split the circuits,' Epner said. Sophia Rose farewelled by loved ones after her tragic death
A three-year-old girl who was stabbed to death by her mother has been farewelled by loved ones just two days before her fourth birthday. Sophia Rose was killed by her mother, Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, on the front lawn of their home in Moore Park Beach, in Queensland, on May 26. Her younger siblings, aged one and two, were inside the home at the time. Flanigan, 32, was charged with her daughter's murder but died after being found unresponsive inside her Brisbane jail cell. She never entered a plea. Sophia's funeral service was held in Victoria on Saturday, where her father Jai Ruane, 39, and her siblings have since relocated. 'Instead of celebrating Sophia's fourth birthday, we're having a funeral,' Mr Ruane told the Courier Mail. 'A funeral that shouldn't be happening, as there is supposed to be systems in place to protect children but that clearly failed.' He said Sophia's birthdays were always special occasions for the family. Her first birthday involved a lavish cake, her second was celebrated twice, and her third was crowned with a fairy-themed party. 'Now, this weekend's going to be a big event, but it's not a birthday,' he said. Mr Ruane last saw his daughter two weeks before she died. His job as a fly-in-fly-out miner meant that his trips home to his family wee intermittent. He recalled holding her hand at their local zoo and a Hungry Jack's lunch. It was an otherwise ordinary day, he said, but now one he will never forget. Mr Ruane still has a drawing the three-year-old made for him that day. Attendees at Sophia's funeral were asked to wear a 'touch of pink' in honour of the little girl's favourite colour. Mr Ruane remembered his first-born as a real 'girly-girl' with a 'strong character' and a curious, social nature. The grieving dad has since relocated to Victoria with his two other children because of the 'memories' attached to the Queensland home. They now live closer to Mr Ruane's siblings and their children. Queensland Corrective Services said in June it would review how Flanigan died despite being assessed as high-risk and requiring close monitoring. It's understood she had been placed in a specialised unit for high-risk prisoners known as the Crisis Support Unit at Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre. Asked about Ms Flanigan's death, a spokesperson for Queensland Police told Daily Mail Australia a report would be prepared for the coroner. 'Due to this no further comment can be made at this time,' they said.
