New £18.3m station near Glasgow takes huge step forward
It will make it easier for people to travel to and from Glasgow for work, education and leisure, while also improving access to local destinations like Dams to Darnley Country Park.
Once complete, the station will feature two platforms connected by a footbridge with lifts, along with waiting shelters, ticket machines and secure cycle storage.

Margaret Gibb, commercial director at Network Rail Scotland, said: 'Breaking ground at Balgray is a major step forward in improving transport for the [[Barrhead]] area.
'The new station will make it easier for people to travel to and from Glasgow, and for locals and visitors to connect with places like Dams to Darnley Country Park.
'It's exciting to see work begin on a project that also supports active travel, encouraging more walking and cycling too.
'We're proud to be part of a partnership delivering real change and long-term benefits for people in Barrhead and the surrounding area.'
An 80-space car park at the station will include electric vehicle charging points, with new walkways linking the platforms directly to nearby housing developments and reservoir paths.
A new bus turning circle and stop have already been delivered on Springfield Road by East Renfrewshire Council (ERC).

The Balgray Station project, which is part of the wider Glasgow City Region City Deal, is being delivered by [[Network Rail]] in partnership with ERC, Transport Scotland, ScotRail and Story Contracting.
Preparatory work and planning for the station began in October 2023, with the final proposal approved by the Glasgow City Region City Deal panel in September 2024.
Construction will continue into next year, with the station expected to open to passengers in Autumn 2026.
Councillor Owen O'Donnell, leader of East Renfrewshire Council, said: 'I'm delighted to see work start on the new Balgray station which will greatly improve transport links between Barrhead and other parts of East Renfrewshire with stations on the Neilston line - Williamwood, Whitecraigs and Patterton.
'Like many of our communities, Barrhead is growing, and this new station will also provide another route from the town into Glasgow.
"We're proud to be working with our partners on delivering this new station which is one of our biggest City Deal projects.'

City Deal accounts delays ‘not good enough'
The local authority's head of finance has warned further delays could have ever more serious impacts on the council's own ability to publish its accounts. The Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) is a joint venture between ten local authorities in South East Wales and focuses on regional investment and prosperity. Its work is overseen by a corporate joint committee, or CJC. Newport's audit committee was told the council had not yet received the CCR City Deal accounts for 2023/24. 'Are you surprised at the delay?' committee member Don Reed asked officers, adding: 'I'm surprised, or am I missing something?' 'Obviously they're late, but they've been late for the second or third year,' replied Meirion Rushworth, the council's head of finance. 'Are we surprised? No, because it's happened before. We are kept up to date with how they are working with Audit Wales to move that on. We're not surprised because we've been kept abreast of things.' He added: 'Is it a problem? Yes of course it is, and the CJC is working with Audit Wales to resolve the position. Will it have an impact on our accounts and all the other accounts? It might do, and that is still an ongoing conversation.' Har Ping Boey, the council's assistant head of finance, said she understood the accounts for 2023/24 were still subject to auditing, but those for 2024/25 would be signed off by October. Committee chairman Gareth Chapman said he shared Mr Reed's views on the delays. 'It's just not good enough, to be in a position three years on, and they can't get their accounts sorted,' Mr Chapman said. The committee agreed unanimously with his proposals to write to Wales' auditor general, and the chief executive of the CJC, expressing their 'concern that the accounts again this year have not been delivered and therefore we at Newport are obviously having to make assumptions of some kind'. Mr Chapman added: 'If elected members in this council thought Meirion and his team are going to be two or three months late in delivering the accounts, it wouldn't be acceptable, would it? So why should we as a council accept it from the City Deal?' The chairman said the nation's auditor general had 'written to one authority saying it could be a misstatement in the accounts shortly because of the value of it – so if he's raising concern, I think we ought to raise concern'. 'It is becoming more material every single year, and there will come a point when the auditors will not be signing off our accounts,' Mr Rushworth added. The CCR was contacted for comment.

MSP hits out at plans for new solar wind farm in Eaglesham
An application for the project at Bonnyton Golf Club has been lodged with East Renfrewshire Council. Contractors Advance Grid Solutions has proposed the installation of 41,000 Solar Photovoltaics, aiming for an anticipated export capacity of up to 28 megawatts (MW). Jackson Carlaw, MSP for Eastwood, has voiced strong opposition to the planned development, arguing that it would significantly erode greenbelt land in Eaglesham. The bid follows East Renfrewshire Council's decision in April to grant planning permission for a 40MW battery energy storage facility located just over two miles from the golf club on the east side of Glasgow Road. Carlaw said: 'There is a serious risk that large swathes of greenbelt land in Eaglesham could now be lost to development. 'The solar farm proposal suggests that the unacceptable decision of Labour and Independent councillors to grant planning permission for the battery plant may lead to a stream of applications for energy infrastructure projects on our local greenfield sites. 'There is no evidence in the planning support statement that the applicant has fulfilled a key requirement of Scotland's National Planning Framework 4 to identify and explore if the development can be on land that is not part of the greenbelt.' Carlaw said that while planning powers are devolved to Scotland, the position of the previous UK Conservative Government was that brownfield areas should be prioritised for solar development. He added: 'It is vital that the case continues to be made for protecting Eaglesham's green belt and I urge local residents to object to the solar farm planning application.' A statement accompanying the planning application for the solar wind farm states: 'The 28 MW array will supply ~29 GWh/yr of zero-carbon electricity, advancing national and Local Development Plan 2 goals. 'LVIA (Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment) confirms no significant landscape or visual effects from the well-screened site; LEMP (Landscape and Ecological Management Plan) secures native planting and a measurable biodiversity net-gain with no impact on designated habitats. 'Cultural-heritage, glint-and-glare and aviation assessments record no significant residual effects.' An East Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: 'The application will be considered in due course.' Advance Grid Solutions has been approached for comment.
